If he hit like this all the time, he would be worth the money he makes. Lets see how is doing in the middle of May.

What does "just keeps playing like the pro he is" mean? He's being paid $21M per year ... and he's been worth, on average, less than 1 win per year ... he had 38 good games in 2020 ... and he's had 7 good games so far here in 2022 ... besides that, what? And it sure doesn't seem like it's only "all you guys that want him gone" that don't like him ... the Padres haven't been able to give him away ... seems like there's gotta be a good reason for that ...
And ... we all love what he did in 2020 ... and what he's done so far in 2022 ... we do!
But none of us is going to Vegas and plunking down any $ on him to win MVP ... I'd not even bet on him to finish the season with positive WAR ... even though he probably will ... but not likely more than barely positive ... guys don't get better in their age 32 season ... (and I had to look up his age ... and I expected it to be more than 32 ... he's been "playing old" since 2018, imo) ...
The Hosmer signing was a mistake ... it's as simple as that ... maybe we'll get lucky and he'll lead us to the post-season this year ... I'm rooting FOR THAT! 🙂

While I agree with most of what you have posted about Hosmer, and vastly under performing to the size of his contract, I can not agree that the actual signing of Hosmer was a mistake, just the dollar amount.
I believe that it marked that SD was finally willing to play in the deep end of baseball. I think that if were not for the signing of Hosmer, SD would not have had a chance to sign Machado, as he would have never looked at SD in that light.
In addition, I still think Hosmer is a great clubhouse guy, and while that is not worth the entirety of his contract, I still believe that he is a pros pro, and was instrumental in the younger kids doing well in the majors, and the trade pieces feeling comfortable with a new team.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 15, 2022, 8:43 amYeah, as much as I believe Eric has not lived up to his contract, signing him most definitely opened the door for Machado( aren't they both Miami kids?)
He's not a thumper nor very good defensively but I'm giving him( and the rest of our guys) a mulligan for having been stuck with Green and Tingler ( what the HELL was AJ thinking????)
Melvin, a former player, catcher, successful manager, will get the best out of him( by giving him CONSISTENCY!)
With Voit now in play, Hos has to step up. For ALL our sake, let's hope he does.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 15, 2022, 10:48 amI feel a bit bad for Hosmer in that I think most of the hate directed at him should really be directed at AJ. That contract looked like a huge overpay from the moment it was signed, but you can't really blame him for taking it. Hosmer has pretty much been the same guy his whole career. He's good against right-handers and struggles with lefties not named Madison Bumgarner. He got paid coming off a career year as if it was a breakout year. Instead he's been pretty much the same guy he was in KC against right-handers while he has regressed defensively and against lefties. In KC against RHP he hit .293/.358/.467 and .265/.310/.382 against LHP. In SD he's hit .287/.350/.457 against RHP and .221/.269/.332 against LHP.
He got paid coming off a season when he hit .335/.410/.528 against RHP and .284/.327/.433 against LHP. He had been on a run where he had been kind of up and down from year to year though, so this should have warranted some skepticism. Instead it seems like AJ paid him as if that would be his new normal and might have just negotiated against himself. From what I remember the Royals were the only other team even rumored to be involved and they were rebuilding. If he had really wanted to stay there I think he would have. I think they maybe just did him a favor to give him some leverage with us. It also seemed like a weird fit since Wil had just had a nice season and seemed to be settling in at 1B.
The signing seemed questionable at the time and has played out poorly. His teammates do seem to love him and his presence probably did help sway Manny. The fact that these type of off the field things are always brought up to defend him tells me he's not living up to his contract on the field though. I also think if you're going to give him credit for Manny you also have to consider what moves might have been prevented by his contract. Would we have gotten Scherzer and Turner last year if Hosmer wasn't around? Would Suzuki be a Padres instead of a Cub? If we're giving him credit for Manny I think it's fair to question the other side of it.
Having said all that I've accepted that Hosmer is probably here to stay and want to see him do well. Love him or hate him any Padres fan should want him to succeed. His success only helps the team and his own value. Also after this year the contract might not be so bad. In a word where Cron and Aguilar both got a little over 7m and Rizzo got 16m, Hosmer at 13m isn't terrible if he performs. He's made a few nice picks at 1st in the early going. If he bounces back with the glove and sustains his usual offensive performance it'll be alright.

I understand with the bat, I expected some drop off leaving KC and the AL Central parks and coming to Petco and the better league in the NL West, so ugh it is what it is.
Your last comment is the one that bothers me the most, the glove. From 2013-2017 he won the gold glove 4 out of 5 years, and then he comes to SD and he cant scoop ice cream?!?! What happened, did he get lazy? Does SD have an inferior infield dirt? He is getting older and going Roger Dorn and doesnt want to mess up the money maker?
Just confusing....
