Padres vs. AZ

Yeah we won't win anything if Machado doesn't hit.

He and Tatis will make this team go.....or not go.

IMO, the play of the game, was Myers first pitch swinging after Gallen walked the bases loaded, a good at bat and a couple of runs in could've set the tone for the whole game 🙁

This!

AND this ...

Too easy to focus on the “usual suspects” in Myers, Hedges, and Naylor ... they performed poorly and that is consistent with their history / reputation.

I am going to focus on the “$30 million” man ... Manny Machado. He is the one who was signed to be the difference maker (now the 6th highest contact in MLB). Last season he “under performed” at PETCO and against RHP. So far, his .182 BA (9th on the team) and .308 OBP (10th on the team) is worrisome. Against RHP he is 1 for 6 with 4Ks and, overall, his 6 K leads the team.

Machado is starting 2020 like he played in 2019 .... and that a concern for the a player signed as the cornerstone of the team.

No matter what happens today, I like the decision to start Lucchesi who is probably in tandem with Quantrill.  This sets up Davies to open the SF series, followed by Paddack and Lamet.  I like our chances despite SF's gritty wins against LA.

Go Padres!

Hosmer scratched again today

Oliveres has to catch the flyball, it cost us 2 runs.

Does Perdomo come out for the 9th? Or does our rookie manager burn another arm?

Obviously not watching the game just seeing the box score, but Perdomo appears to be pitching well. And since he's still on his first time through the lineup, he should be trusted to get 3 more outs before giving up 4 runs.

What position is Oliveres playing? And did he get a bad jump, make a bad read, or just fail to go all in?

On to San Fran!

Way too small a sample size while being at home but against a good team but some interesting analytics:

  1. Padres wanted to improve OBP (truly bad over the past few years) .... the sit 2nd in the NL based primarily on being #1 in BB (27) ahead of the second place finisher  PHIL (19).
  2. On the other hand, they also sit #1 in K (42) ahead of ATL (39).
  3. BA (8th) and SLG (9th) mid pack but playoff worthy.
  4. Pitching is good: ERA (3rd); WHIP (5th); Ks (4th) .... offset a bit by also being 4th in BB allowed.

Still AZ is a good team ... a legit runner for 2nd place in the NL West ... Padres lay some losses on them and produce some playoff level stats. No real "black hole" yet to emerge.

On to SF ... on the road but against a bad team ... no time to slip up.

Game had some mixed performance results, but pitching led the way.  I thought Lucchesi did a decent job and could have escaped with no runs scored against him.  Quantrill, Hill, Perdomo and Stammen were very good with Hill and Perdomo showing they can be trusted in middle innings to bring the game to the potential closers.

Thought Mejia looked good behind the plate; didn't get a hit but you get the feeling it's just a matter of time before that bat gets hot.  Pham looked tired and Machado had some slow, upper-cut swings that didn't impress.  Need to rest them in SF, depending on whether Hosmer can play or not.  I'd put Pham at DH on Tuesday and Machado there on Wednesday.  Grisham and Profar continue to impress.  Got to cut down on K's but some of that comes with patience at the plate.  SF has some momentum, so it will be up to Davies to frustrate them with his slow stuff - seems like they handled the LA fireballers pretty well after the 1st two games.   Go Padres!
