Padres vs. AZ

PreviousPage 4 of 7Next

Might need to focus on Machado vs. RHP ... that 2019 wRC+ at 89 is not what is needed from a expected cornerstone piece of the offense.

At this early stage of the season with 16 pitchers BUT in a short 60 games season when every game result is magnified, the use of the pen options will be a challenge for Tingler.

  1. Don't want to give any games away would suggest relying on the most reliable mix of RP
  2. Don't want to "burn out" the most reliable RP early ... even a 60 game slate
  3. Don't want to idle the "secondary" level of RP resulting in them being out of form if needed

There probably is a desire to ensure all the roster members feel a part of the team and actually get to play at some point early so they stay engaged if needed later on .... plus maybe important for Tingler to make some judgements on these guys in real game situations before the cuts down to 30.

Tingler will have to weigh all these issues with the opponent and the flow of the game at hand. A challenge.

Line-up

  1. Tatis (SS)
  2. Grisham (CF)
  3. Machado (3B)
  4. Pham (LF)
  5. Hosmer (1B)
  6. Myers (RF)
  7. Profar (2B)
  8. Hedges (C)
  9. Naylor (DH)

Expected Grisham to #2 slot and Naylor DH. Looks as though the are going with Profar ... for now ... as the full time 2B (no platoon with Garcia).

Then there is the Hedges call.

The only real head scratcher to me is Hedges still drawing an MLB paycheck.  I don’t care how good defensively you are, if you can’t hit, you are a liability.  Heck, he can’t even lay down a bunt.  I realize Meija isn’t necessarily the answer, but damn, Hedges has been awful for as long as I can remember.  You just can’t afford to have your catcher act like your pitcher in a lineup that allows a DH.  You are going 9-8 hitters every game.

Don't like today's lineup.

First 2 games produced, so change? I guess I just don't understand major leaguers anymore. Here I thought they were the most superstitious athletes- find something good, stick to it.

Totally agree on Hedges. Hell, what was it, 3 years ago, guy was stepping in the bucket every swing? Still doing it today!

Richards look good?

As if there aren’t enough reasons to not use the head first slide!

Would be 2-0 right now If the Padres did the right thing and told their players to never slide that way again!
If someone gets hurt sliding that way I will.....well,I won’t do anything cause I can’t but come on!

How many times does it have to be a negative before someone tells the players to slide the correct way?

Sure did.

5 innings ... 1 hit ... 3 BB ... 6 K ... 0 runs.

Don't like the head first slide ... but this one by Naylor was one of the worse I have seen.

He seemed to get down well before the base ... got to the base and made no effort to anchor himself with this hand on the base ... clearly slid his entire body well past the base ... then lost any sense of concentration about getting back on the bag ... when he finally did his entire body was so far past the base he could not even reach the base with his trailing leg. It looked like a "slip and slide" in the backyard.

Tie that with his befuddlement in has ABs ... first two AB bad swings on bad pitches and did not offer on pitches over the plate ... seemed dazed and confused. If anything, hitting is his strong suit ... not today.

He better recover his concentration in the next two weeks or he will be the body sent to the alternative site.
