Padres vs. AZ

Hosmer out of the line-up due to a NON Covid-19 illness.

France replaces him straight up at 1B batting 5th.

I am surprised we went to Strahm again. I would have thought that with a 2 run lead and 3 innings to go this would have been the perfect time to test out our Pom, Pagan, Yates lineup.

You gotta love the aproach this guys are taking, they really had a plan againist Ray tonight, and even better is that they executed

It was Strahm's first appearance.  Pagan and Pomeranz pitched in Game 1.  With Yates pitching today, if we get into a save situation tomorrow, then it will probably be either Pagan or Pomeranz as the closer.

Everyone in the line-up contributed except for Hedges - couldn't even bunt the runner over.  With a RHP going tomorrow probably see Mejia behind the plate and possibly Naylor in the line-up at 1b or DH if Hosmer can't go.

Go Padres!  Keep up the good work pushing the count to put stress on the other team's starting pitchers.

I think the goal is to not use relievers in back to back games especially early on.  If Strahm or Stammen had gotten into a pinch then we probably would have seen Pagan/Pom but no reason to burn them considering you might need them tomorrow.

To me the most encouraging thing is that our #4 and 5 relievers looked great.  And probably our lowest reliever (Guerra) IMO looked great last night.  It might say a run on 2 hits, but one was a dribbler up the line and the other was a bloop, they wernt really barreling up the ball.  If our pen can be that dominant we will win a lot of games.

The player that has surprised me the most so far is Profar.  He saw 26 pitches in four at bats.  You have to think that when a pitcher has to work that hard to get an out they tire out and are more likely to leave a hanging pitch for the next guy.

Mejia might have gone 0 fer yesterday but smashed a couple balls, they just all found gloves.  Hedges looked like I would up against a big leaguer.

Tatis/Machado/Pham/Profar/Hosmer/Grisham/Mejia then using Myers/Naylor/Olivares/France for the other two slots is looking like a great lineup from top to bottom.

I must say that so far this looks like an entirely different lineup than recent years. Almost everyone seems to be working counts and forcing the pitchers to tire and make mistakes. It's not exactly a thrilling, power-packed lineup like the Yankees or Twins, but it looks like the kind of lineup that can win games. I must admit that Grisham is looking better than I expected. If the lineup and pitching staff can maintain these kinds of performances we may be closer to competing than I thought.

Profar seems to be a better hitter when he has two strikes against him.  Sure, he might strike out but he really makes the pitcher work in front of the bigger bats behind him.  I like his enthusiasm and so far his defense has been solid.

Looking forward to see how Richards does against Arizona, especially Escobar and Calhoun.  If he has command of all his pitches, it should be another good game.   Go Padres!

Also, had no idea that Pham was that fast or that good of a base-stealer.  He lost count of the outs and ran into a double play but like what I've seen from him at the plate and in the field.  Possibly could have caught that drive that went off his glove, but it appears to have been slicing away and he did make a good effort.   He's going to make a huge difference in this team every day.

Today should be informative since it is the 1st game vs. a RHSP. In 2019, the Padres were not as productive against RHP vs. being strong vs. LHP. Using 2019 wRC+ vs. RHP the "top" 9 were:

129   Tatis (SS)

105.  Pham (LF)

103.  Garcia (2B)

102.  Hosmer (1B)

100.  Mejia (C)

94.  Grisham (CF)

91.  Naylor (DH)

89.  Machado (3B)

87.  Myers (RF)

======== others:

79.  Profar

78.  France

52.  Hedges

n/a  Olivares, Cronenworth

========

Hopefully Hosmer is ready to go.
