Padres here Jayce Tingler

Well......I got the Girardi to Philly right.

Got the Tingler one half right....😉

What I didn’t know was that Tingler and Kinsler go way back.....back to their days in College at Mizzou.

Does that mean Kinsler is definitely on the 26 man next season?

According to an article Padres home page, he is also very close with Pujols. They played together in some affiliate ball in Kansas. Apparently Pujols has already called some Padre players to tell them how excited Pujols is for Tingler and what a good choice this was by Preller. So, maybe he will have the respect of the veteran players.

  • Maybe overthinking here, but could it be that Preller got Tingler the job knowing that if it sucks he can have Bochy for 2020? It would be very disrespectful to do that to a guy like Ron Washington

Pujols connection/endorsement doesn't hurt.  But personally, I HATE the Kinsler connection, b/c it creates a justification for bringing back a "vet leader" who didn't play well enough to warrant returning.  Coach/adviser... maybe.

The Pads liked Tingler all the way back to when they hired Andy Green, but Rangers wouldn't allow Pads to interview him for a lateral type move at that time.   So it's pretty obvious the Rangers were high on him too, which is encouraging.

The 2 thoughts that have crystallized the most for me in the last 24 hours are:

1)  Maddon was always going to Angels.  Despite there being SO many openings, some really appealing, Bochy seems committed to taking a year off.  Phillies went all in on the "vet manager" concept, so not surprising Girardi landed there.  After those guys, is there REALLY a "veteran" guy that's compelling?   Pads only team in on Ron Washington.  I had no interest in crusty guys like Showalter or Dusty Baker... In other words, it initially FELT like the Pads were "missing out" on high profile guys... but they really weren't.  So the decision came down more to a guy Preller has known well for 15 years or a Loretta type with a higher MLB profile but also no MLB Manager experience.  Like many others I loved the Loretta idea (still my wife's favorite Padre); but my one huge concern with him: is he TOO even-keeled, stolid, flat-line emotionally for a Manager (along the lines of Bud Black)?

2)  Despite Tingler's variety of experience making for a really strong resume for a guy that young.... it's really more of a Resume for a future Front office guy.

I think I am disappointed that they did not bring in Mike Scocia or Freddi Gonzalez (ATL & MIA), or well respected 1st time candidate Joe Espada from HOU. Tingler still could have been the guy, still would have at least liked seeing Scocia given consideration.

The Tingler hiring may be good news for some to the current coaches since Tingler does not come with an entourage of options with ML experience and likely Texas will not be willing to free up any of his Texas ties.

Might make Balsley, Hoffman, and even Barajas more comfortable since they are liked by the front office and provide a lot of experience to support Tingler.

Shumaker may be on the bubble (he did interview for a managerial job .. not getting it) and is a ”new guy”.

Of course, the hitting coach is always at risk. Should note that the current hitting coach will suddenly get much better if the traded Hedges, Myers, and Renfroe and replaced them with some better bat to ball hitters.

I'm not terribly excited about this hiring. I too would have preferred someone who's worked a major league dugout before.

But I can't imagine it will take too long to find out if this guy gets the respect from the veterans. If we're playing hard past the All- Star break( whilst winning), I think that'll be a sign that he's been accepted.

On the other hand, should we suck and these guys look like they're going through the motions, Fowler will personally show this guy to the curb, with Preller along side him.

I'm hoping we're winning.

Long live Jayce Tingler ( what a horrible surname!!!!!)

Tingler gets a 3 year deal ... 2020-2022. Makes 2022 mega critical for the organization.

Preller has 3 years to go on his deal .... Myers has 3 years on his deal ... Hosmer can opt out after 3 more years (and could get dealt the year before) .... new CBA will be (should be) in effect or there is a strike ... Paddack, Tatis, Urias, Naylor, Quantrill, Lamet will have either established themselves as quality ML players or fallen to the scrap heap ... Gore, Patino, and Morejon will have arrived (probably late 2020) and given the initial view of their futures (good or bad) ... and the next wave of Campusano, Arias, Edwards will have hand a couple of more minor league seasons to develop or fade away.

So for Tingler every year is important and building to a legit contender in 2021 seems to be the direction ... 2022 maybe be the make or break year for him and the entire front office.

I am so happy to see someone else besides myself looking beyond 2020! I am glad that someone else does not think we have to tear everything down if we don't get to the playoffs in 2020.

Yeah it has started to feel like 2020 is a make or break year when it really shouldn't be.  Fowler owns that with the "heads will roll" rhetoric.

I hope that's just talk. Because if it isn't I could see AJ making the 2015 mistakes again.

2015 mistakes were trading for the Roy ..Upton and Kemp.. I don't think the ROY (Alonso ) is available ... And we are at a different level now.. Kemp nd Upton wouldn't move the needle much.. We need Lefties.. And if we indeed go all in.. Tge names this time around are Betts or Lindor... Shogo or Dickerson .. Strasburg or Cole... And Benintendi or Tucker. Or Mazara.. Much better talent
