If he doesn't, expect to see Sullivan get more time.
This team is all about producing. If you don't, one way tickets out of town are plentiful this season.
Only 11 AB this season … lucky to know where to go to bat.
Higashioka is not a good hitter but he does provide the superior defense. Sullivan is also not a good hitter (age 30 with less ML time than Higashioka) and just OK defensively. If you want offense from the back-up catcher … will not get that from either. Then less in EP from Seagle and Plawecki.
Let us hope Campusano can keep up the offense and play 120-130 games behind the plate.

Quote from dusty on April 13, 2024, 5:31 pmIt will be nice to get Manny back for sure. Getting him back will keep Campy’s bat in the lineup when he is given the day off from catching duties. Then can get Wade back to the bench or DFA’d. Another bat, in general, would go a LONG way for sure

Quote from fenn68 on April 13, 2024, 5:40 pmListened to Shildt’s pre-game. One thing that was clear … Shildt would prefer not to move players around in the line-up or in the field if they are doing well. Sort of goes with his pretty set line-up through the first 16 games of the season.
For today’s game just giving Bogaerts a rest (along with Campy) … nothing else.
So, if (when) a shuffle is warranted … it will be done with minimal upheaval to the overall lineup / defense.

Quote from fenn68 on April 13, 2024, 5:44 pmAlso note that Manny was taking fielding BUT limited his throws to only 2B … so apparently still a way to go.

Quote from fenn68 on April 14, 2024, 4:05 amCosgrove did not have it last night … 0.1 innings and 3 runs. Never good timing for a RP to have an off game but despite a real ugly overall stat line in 10 games … two really bad outings totaling 0.2 innings and 9 ER. The other eight for 6.1 innings only one ER. Didn’t check how many runners inherited scored on him … so maybe not as compelling. He just seems a bit off this season after a great rookie campaign in 2023. Shildt is using him a lot.
Again to my surprise Waldron had a good game (now two in a row). Hope it lasts (have my doubts) … but for a #5 SP he is doing well and given the work out of Brito and Vasquez with Avila being DFA’d looks like he will get an extended tryout.

Quote from 84padres on April 14, 2024, 5:41 amTheir fielding is becoming a big concern, 13 Errors in 17 games is not what winning baseball looks like . 14 unearned runs in 17 games is unacceptable at any level . Ranked 23rd out of 30 overall . This should be an easy way to improve our outlook .

Errors are an issue … worse since they seem to lead to a lot of unearned runs … critical runs.
Temper the overall view of the defense considering they are #4 in dWAR, #11 in DRS, and #4 in “range”.
Drilling down a bit on the errors … surprisingly the Padres’ two gold glove winners are the prime problem: Kim 4 errors (3 fielding / 1 throwing) and Tatis 3 errors (2 fielding / 1 throwing). Have to think that is self correcting considering the players’ histories
After them, sort of scattered errors among Bogaerts (2), Cronenworth, Wade (2), and Campusano. Then consider Croney’s was that faulty glove indecent and Wade will get replaced by Machado (hopefully) … should be OK.
Filter through all that and maybe we distill down to Kim? Hopefully the errors are just a aberration since his other defensive metrics remain well above average. Overall Kim is having a tough start to 2024 his walk year.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 14, 2024, 6:54 amPoor offensive start may be affecting Kim's defensive play - hasn't happened in the past but this is his walk year plus he might not feel comfortable where he is hitting in the line-up. Need him near the top or near the bottom but not in the middle of the line-up. Agree that Kim and Tatis will be better defensively and they already have made some spectacular plays - Kim's errors have come on routine ground outs while Tatis trying to do too much with his arm. Not worried about the team defensively - this is one of the best in the league so I think it is just an early season aberration.
Have my concerns with Cosgrove. RPs can be very erratic and there's something not right with Cosgrove; may be hiding a minor injury but he needs some time off IL or option to somewhere to get back on track. Might be the right time with Morejon looking decent right now. The way Shildt uses his RPs, going to have to get more fresh arms on the move between the minors and SD.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 14, 2024, 10:06 amI saw this comment somewhere and instantly shrugged it off but….is Kim using a Rawlings Gold Glove this year?
I assume GG winners don’t have to use one and maybe it was an off hand comment but someone suggested he wasn’t using his familiar Glove?
