So, Wacha’s second start was good (no runs in 6 innings) but his other three starts, in order, were 4 runs / 6 innings … 7 runs / 4.1 innings … 5 runs / 4 innings.

Overall in the 4 starts he has a 7.08 ERA / 1.72 WHIP and that includes the one start with no runs in 6 innings. Basically that is very ugly.

IL candidate? Bullpen candidate? Release candidate? … if he does not show significant improvement Padres can’t continue to roll him out there.

They “only” have $7.5MM invested in him for 2023 … then going forward club/player options … first, club option for 2 years at $16MM/yr (not likely) but then Wacha has an option for 3 years at $6.5MM/yr (and given his current production he is not worth that but might take it).

I think sometimes we sign one too many P ..Teheran would have done better in those 4 starts ..Groome could have too.. Now sort of stuck with Wacha ..who hasn't pitched much out of the BP during his career.. BUT who I think could benefit (a la Nick 2022) with a +2 mph tick on his velo out of the BP..at least for a while as he finds "it' which he clearly can

*On a note.. AJP is doing a very good job at drafting and developing some arms as well as finding some gems in FA... aka Weathers/Wilson/Honeywell... and the since traded Gore...(just within the last year)
