I REALLY like our rotation. We're at .500 with some uneven performances. Imagine when ALL 5 are into their groove? Hell, the most consistent guy so far has been Waldron- who'd of thunk that a month ago???
It seems the reinforcements are fairing well in the minors as well. Bergert be first in line? Obviously Brito gets first nod but after him.....or would it be Vazquez?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 15, 2024, 8:31 amMazur over Vasquez. Even though he is only at AA, Mazur has much better command of his pitches and should have enough velocity to keep major league hitters honest because of his excellent location. One of Mazur's games was in high altitude Amarillo with a strong wind blowing out. Vasquez has pitched twice in EP and once in Sacramento.
Mazur: 11 IP, 5 H, 1 ER (HR), 1 BB, 12 K's That's an 0.55 wHIP, an 0.82 ERA and a .143 BA against
Vasquez: 11.1IP, 18H, 10 ER (2HR), 4 BB, 13K's That's a 1.94 WHIP, a 7.94 ERA and a .360 BA against
Vasquez has improved his command and does get K's. EP is a horrible place to pitch so the coaches have to look at other things besides the resulting numbers. Vasquez relies on getting a lot of spin on his pitches and that just doesn't happen at high altitude. His game at Sacramento (30 feet above sea level) very similar to two in EP (3,762 feet above sea level). By the way, Amarillo sits at 3,671 feet above sea level.

Quote from 3fingersplit on April 15, 2024, 1:33 pmI know it’s very early but this team is showing some toughness that they didn’t seem to have last year and the starters have been better than I expected and then throw in the relief side and the way Shildt is using them has been masterful.
The rest of the league should not sleep on the Padres this year…they seem to have a different vibe than last season
Go Padres !!! ⚾️

Mazur or Bergert will likely be the choice….but……..but…..Snelling is the Merrill of our pitching prospects IMO.
He has dominated at every stop, albeit short stints.
Just 20 years old (like Merrill) but I think he would stay in the rotation from the first time he's given a shot even if soon.
But like I said….Bergert and/or Mazur will probably be first choice due to age…..but should they be?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 15, 2024, 7:57 pmMuch like King did in LA, Musgrove gutted it out through 6 and picked up a win. Still doesn't have his location but improving. Padres seen unfazed by being behind, but it would be wonderful to take and early lead and hold it every once in awhile. Bottom of the line-up came through again and the defense was solid as were the RPs.

Wasn’t there a report that Musgrove was working on a new pitch? Maybe that (along with recovery time from last year’s injury) has slowed his return’s effectiveness?
Looked at some of the year’s stats and he is a bit lower in K% and a bit higher in BB% but what was noticeable was a large drop in ground ball % (something like 45% to 35%).
Watching yesterday and his command on the pitches low in the zone was poor (missing by a lot as a general statement) … hitters laying off which could contribute to the change in results.
Pretty confident that Musgrove will get it together and return to his previous effectiveness.

So Preller came in and immediately traded all our previous #1's? Ross, Turner, Fried....and for what??? In the end, not much. Bummer.
