Opening Day Lineup

PreviousPage 8 of 13Next

I think the problem with Myers is the following.

1. Health, you cant be successful if you not on the field 5 out of 7 days.

2.  SD has screwed with his positioning since the 2017 season. I dont really understand, much like my confusion with the moving Nevin and Klesko for Burroughs. For most players, its hard to stay focused on hitting when you are in a new position in the field as well. Oh, and they are doing it again this ST, ughh!

3. I still really believe that the HR derby really screwed up his swing, he has really never been the same at the plate since the 2016 HR derby. Hopefully, the appearance of Machado, replicates the Kemp protection that he had in 2016, and then he can approach that .260/30/30/30 season he almost had in 2016.

If he hits .275 with 30 HRs, 30 doubles, and 30 steals, then he is worth the $22.5M he is owed next year. And also becomes very trade-able at that time.

Padres, Indians Still Engaged In Talks On Veteran Starters

The Padres and Indians remain engaged in “continued discussions” regarding Cleveland’s group of high-quality, veteran starters, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic (Twitter link). There’s no expectation that a deal will come together by the start of the season, but the ongoing chatter remains notable.

=========

Got to be impressed by Preller and his never quit approach to make trades. The report suggests Cleveland may be lowering its demands driven by a continuing desire to lower payroll (so don't think Myers in a deal).

Cleveland has a deep SP staff and an abysmal OF ... plus a weak minor league system. Yet they still have a near term objective to win while they have Ramirez / Lindor. Padres have an excess of low cost / controllable OF and a ton of quality prospects. Clearly the basis for a deal is there IF Cleveland relents a bit ... which in their financial position may be more possible than before.

Hopefully the move is for Kluber (even with his age) not Bauer who can be a bit of an "issue" at times. However, either may work depending on the return.

No idea the fair return given the situation but at a minimum a couple of ML OF (buyer's choice among Renfroe, Reyes, Cordero) ... exclude Myers (contract does not fit with Cleveland) and Margot (Padres have no other CF). Then a couple of prospects ... probably SP that the Padres have in abundance and/or someone such as A.Allen since they will have a near term catcher need. This may have to be a volume type deal to Cleveland since doubt SD would move any of their top tier prospects who they project as "elite" potential.

I generally find that Roster Resource is pretty good with its roster and lineup data ...

It's showing Franmil not in the starting lineup ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-san-diego-padres/

But the party line from padres.com seems to be he's hitting cleanup ... https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/franmil-reyes-takes-key-spot-in-padres-lineup

Has Franmil beaten out Renfroe for the most PAs in RF to start the season?

With Nix now out for at least 2 months (likely more with rehab) if this does not turn into TJ ... they have another 60 day DL candidate to go with Jankowski (yet to be put on the 60). Two "easy" moves to accommodate non-roster adds without DFA action ... yet.

For opening day ... a fair chance non-roster players could be added: L.Allen (last SP slot); Stewart (if they want Mejia to start in AAA to work on defense); and even Solis (as another LHRP). So natural room for two of them and if Mitchell does not make the roster in the pen he is out of options so will be DFA.

About mid-season (a lot of time for other things to happen) the reverse pressure will arrive as Castillo, Lamet, Nix, Jankowski could all potentially be ready .... but worry about that in 3-4 months.

I'm not in SD ... so I don't watch the boyz much ... just got a text from someone who does ... worried that Urias isn't ready ... needs more minor league ABs ... which wouldn't bother me at all ... and would get him reps with Tatis ... and would delay his service clock ... so ... why not send him down?  (First answer is ... then is it OK for Garcia to be the OD Shortstop?)

Not seeing Garcia as a starting SS if the Padres want to get off to a good start ... not sure he would hit better than Urias as a regular and Urias looks the better fielder.

As for Urias, he does need to develop more with the bat but not all that sure that going down to AAA would benefit him as much as facing ML pitching. He was productive in AAA last season.

Guessing he gets the ML shot out of the blocks and then if he really struggles ... he may get optioned maybe when Tatis is recalled. Leaves Kinsler at 2B (where he has looked good) for a longer run. Don't really see that much benefit of having Tatis - Urias working together in AAA ... does not take that long get in sync.

Just listened to a Green interview.

One point .... just so that we don't go all panicky when the opening 25 man roster is announced ... expect that at some point in the following days another move (or two) will occur. (seems turning into a norm in MLB).

Guessing they carry and extra bat for PH duties at first then move back to the 13 pitching staff as they start working through the arms in games. Since they don't need the #4 or #5 starters for days ... no point having them on the opening day roster could also carry an extra RP. Could argue the other way that they go short a bat early and carry the extra pitcher since the starters are not conditioned to go 6 innings reliably yet. Remember AAA does not start for a week after MLB ... so not affecting the EP roster.

Not sure if factored is any benefit of doing a DFA once the season starts when other teams are committed to their 25 man rosters to get a player without options to clear waivers and getting them to AAA on a non-roster status.

So be forewarned ... the opening day roster is likely not the opening month roster.

Robbie Erlin is going to open the year as a versatile relief option/long man. He’s out of the rotation mix. Barring any last-minute additions, it seems like Quantrill v. Allen for the final spot.

Opening Day starter .... LAUER! Followed by Lucchesi on Friday.

One factor in delaying the Paddack debut (to whenever) may be the first step in controlling innings across the full season. Every small step.

Well if Quantrill can actually make it through an inning... yikes!  Pressure might've gotten to young Logan Allen?  It probably makes sense to give him 1st look based on age over Logan Allen.
