I think we at least need to give Margot a chance to show he is better than the 2018 version.

But if he can't/doesn't,whats the alternative?

Start Freddie everyday even against lefties....or put Myers back out there?

Cordero/Myers platoon with Myers in LF against righthanders Cordero in CF?

We're not in the "figuring it out" stage anymore....we are in the "win games" any way we can stage.

I think its going to be a platoon with Margot vs LHP and Jank vs RHP. Jank has a .340 OBP vs RHP (.345 in 2018) and IF Margot can get there vs LHP (his career OBP vs RHP is only .307, but was .353 in 2017) then we have a great combo of defense and OBP in the lead off spot and in CF. I think Cordero is destined for RF IMO. He has the speed and arm for RF and needs to work solely in RF in AAA to start the season.

I agree it will be.......to start with.

But what if Margot continues as he did last year?

That’s just not good enough on a team that is ready to win.

The problem is we don’t have another bona fide CF ready in the wings.

Since 2019 is still a transition year (re: SP), I think they need to give CF to Margot and really give him that shot to prove he has a future. He "was" a top prospect ... at only 22 in 2017 had a very good rookie campaign (#6 in ROY balloting and something like a 2.5 WAR). He will only be 24 for this season. He may not be the great offensive threat but with what he brings defensively makes him useful when surrounded by average (or less) in the corners.

Don't really see much of a future for Jankowski beyond the 4th OF role ... Cordero is appearing to be at best a corner OF. Then not much near term in the system ... Reed is not viewed as having great hitting potential and Olivares still sits as a long shot maybe in 3 years. Need better than those options in 2020-21.

IF Margot even rebounds to his 2017 form ... fine for the future but if not ... next winter CF will be on the trade / FA target list.

Side: I still buy into having strong defense up the middle and a Hedges - Urias - Tatis - Margot group will be that. Just no Myers in CF (even occasionally).

Gotta believe this is a make or break year for Margot.

Jankowski will get some run but Manny has to step up his game if he plans on being here in 2020.

1, Hosmer 1B (lead off? yes, reasoning he bounced into a ton of double plays in 2018, we eliminate 25-30% of those by batting him lead off, he has a solid OBP and BA (career ,280+) and should set the tables nicely, speed doesnt matter as much in todays baseball)

2. Myers LF I am hopefull that with an OBP machine in front and Manny behind him Myers goes .270 30 2Bs 30 Hrs 30 SB and 100 R and RBI's

3. MAchado 3B

4. Renfroe RF (I can see .250/.320/.500 30 Bombs type season)

5. Hedges C

6. Margot CF

7. Kinsler 2B

8. Urias SS

Thats my day 1 lineup

Actually forgot Mad Bum was starting.. lefty take Hosmer out

Give A Rod 2.0 the start after a strong spring, and before sending him back to AAA or France (ditto)

Move everyone up one and bat him at 5

If all 25 members of the opening day roster are in the organization today, I'd be shocked. Don't know how that would translate into the OD lineup, but it will have some.

Also, the odds of Urias being on the El Paso roster on opening day are barely higher than the odd of ME being on that roster. Luis will be batting in the two-hole at Petco Park on 3/28.

What position do you play? Do you have a favorite jersey number, I will make sure I pre order a Chihuahua jersey for the season opener!

I've given up on trying to figure out specifics of what this front office might do! 🙂
But it wouldn't at all surprise me to see them do something big last-minute just like they did when they acquired Kimbrell 20 minutes after opening-day rosters were due to MLB offices.

Do think there is a very good chance a "noteworthy" move is made in ST (can debate what is noteworthy).

Probably has a bit to do with the excess corner OF tied with someone signing Harper. IF SF signs Harper ... might see PHIL and Preller hooking up (Padres might only get prospects but for now clear clutter in the OF). On the other hand if PHIL signs Harper ... SF / Preller make a similar deal of corner OF for prospects.

Neither of those would do much for the 2019 team but could open a roster spot for either having one of the non-roster players make opening day (e.g. Tatis, L.Allen) or allowing them to sign a Kuechel or Gonzalez.

I am still holding out for a Cleveland - SD deal. Cleveland the AL Central favorite cannot go into 2019 with that OF ... is that short of major league talent but do recognize the are really in a financial squeeze plus the farm system is just so-so with no OF prospects near term for their near term window. None of the OF FA remaining are that appealing and will cost for a short term fix ... so dealing for a Renfroe / Reyes just makes sense. Could even argue Myers (only 3 MM this year and next the drop Kipnis which would offset Myers increase).

Pitching is strong for Cleveland but as contenders don't see them at this point (for what the Padres would offer) moving their top arms and after signing Machado don't really think the Padres want those extra salaries. If enough Padres pieces work for Cleveland ... how about Mike Clevenger who has been a very effective ML arm with 4 years of control at league minimum in 2019?

That’s not the narrative coming from the FO and the players.

Not saying you’re wrong.

If we add a solid Starter I would think they would say they “are” ready to win.

Especially considering it should be a down year for SF and AZ.
