Opening Day Lineup
Quote from fenn68 on March 28, 2019, 8:44 amMitchell DFA'd .... Pirela optioned to AAA.
They went with 6 OF / 5 INF / 2 C / 12 pitchers. Cordero is still on the 25 man .... for now. Would expect a move for a SP for Saturday with Cordero being optioned.
Tatis added to the 40 man and uses Mitchell's spot. Will need another 40 man slot when they add Saturday's starter who likely will be a non-roster guy (Allen - Quantrill - Margevicius). Think Nix - Diaz - Kennedy all go DL
So still a tease for a couple of days.

Quote from fenn68 on March 28, 2019, 8:55 amI guess we should be on the look out for adding another middle INF ... maybe Pirela returns but expect Urias to be in AAA until he is positioned to get regular ML ABs. A bit of an issue with Garcia being the only guy on the bench but he is also a key LHH PH ... more so once they send down Cordero.
So still see two near term moves .... 5th SP .... another middle INF. That would likely push Cordero plus ? off the 25 man.

Quote from fenn68 on March 28, 2019, 9:05 amAcee is reporting that Margevicius will be the Saturday starter .... so good chance Nix goes to the 60 day IL to make roster space.
Side note: 60 day IL would then have Richards - Lamet - Castillo - Jankowski - Nix and with all except Richards likely to come off mid-season plus a few non-roster players positioned to be added if needed (e.g. Allen, Quantrill, and a RP TBNL) .... going to be some interesting new 60 day DLs or DFAs.

The guy was just BAD....never saw a guy get raked so hard or throw so many 56 footers and be on a major league roster

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 28, 2019, 11:05 amDoes this mean Pads only pay Mitchell is it 1/6 of salary (150K)? Seems pretty likely to end up at AAA where IMO you might as well have him start in the first few months... as long as he doesn't block anyone. If/when Nix, Kennedy return & others bump up, then to the pen.

Since he was removed at the end of ST I think he gets 45 days of pay (about 1/4) if released. Not sure what happens if he clear waivers and is assigned to AAA.

Quote from fenn68 on March 28, 2019, 12:14 pmThe addition of Margevicius is a surprise given he has just pitched on game above A+ ... but maybe we should have paid more attention to the extensive use of him by the Padres in the ST "A" games. Selecting him to the roster does jump a lot of more heralded prospects.
From what I saw a sub-90s FB but good control / command ... and that control / command is what likely set him ahead of the pack for now.
Maybe reading more into some moves than warranted but the DFA of Mitchell and the bypassing of Allen and Quantrill could be read as wanting not to continue to live with pitchers with command issues. Sort of ties with some comments about want the hitters to reduce strikeouts and improve OBP ... the other side of the coin ... which may also translate into some future roster calls. Padres may be experiencing the luxury of having an abundance of talent and now being able to move to a roster that fits their objectives rather than just going with the body that is available.

I went to see the last 2 preseason games in Seattle, and Mitchell getting cut was one of my takeaways:
Came on in 8th inning vs. DEEP Minors bench with 1-0 lead, walks 2 guys, a hit in there somewhere, just clearly flustered & rushing on mound, 2 mound visits (it was Webster Rivas C by that point, but still)... was lucky to get out of inning without blowing the lead. Saw the stuff like 94 FB, 4 different pitches, but just kept missing. Think it's unlikely anyone claims a 900K salary transitioning from SP to RP out of options guy. Gives him a few months out of the limelight to show something or becomes a footnote in Pads history.
Other observations: Margot looked great hitting back to back laser HR's later in game 1 & a running catch on a deep liner right over his head tough to track down. Pads starting lineup just destroyed Leake in 1st inning of Game 1. Paddack (sat behind plate) looked amazingly good considering he was throwing almost no change ups. Strahm looked good too, but was sitting on 3B line 2nd day by Pads dugout that day. Manny looked more than a little distracted on the field that day, but probably just ready to get done with ST; happened 3rd/4th inning. Thought he went above & beyond signing tons of autographs from the bench rest of game. Definitely had a "posse" on the bench notably Tatis & Reyes.
I do think there will be an interesting leadership dynamic at play; Manny is a superstar, Hosmer is not. But Hosmer might be a more natural born leader, plus the extra year on the team. My 2 day impression was Manny has that total comfortable in own skin, loose, joking, almost cocky or brash attitude that a lot of guys who know they're the best player on the field/court have. Interesting to see the effect on the young guys now that he's a "vet" on an exceedingly young team.

Quote from 84padres on March 28, 2019, 3:45 pmPlease leave Myers in LF and keep him healthy, good game for him. Lauers was very good today 70 pitches in 6 innings with another pickoff was all you can ask of him. Great to see Tatis Jr get a hit in 1st AB and real nice speed on bunt single. Only 1 game but couldn't have gone much better
