From what I saw a sub-90s FB but good control / command ... and that control / command is what likely set him ahead of the pack for now.
Maybe reading more into some moves than warranted but the DFA of Mitchell and the bypassing of Allen and Quantrill could be read as wanting not to continue to live with pitchers with command issues. Sort of ties with some comments about want the hitters to reduce strikeouts and improve OBP ... the other side of the coin ... which may also translate into some future roster calls. Padres may be experiencing the luxury of having an abundance of talent and now being able to move to a roster that fits their objectives rather than just going with the body that is available.
There has to be some % chance of a not in system MLB addition here, but if not, this is the right move.
You simply can not look ex. Urias, Cordero, Pirela ... or Margevicius for that matter in the eye & send them down and give not only a rotation spot but spot on 40 man roster to either of 2 guys who had the opportunity all camp long & very frankly did not earn it at this time.
With Mitchell replaced by Brito on 40-man, I still have 6 "asterick" guys at bottom of 40-man: Brito, Perdomo, Pirela, Kennedy, Guerra, & Torrens. So there is room on the "45-man" as guys come back. Pressure will come in offseason with only 1 true FA and 4 of top 15 (L. Allen, Baez, Naylor, Quantrill) plus who knows who else getting added to roster...

Assuming Cordero goes down for Margevicius, Brito serves in the exact same role Jankowski would.
But with Hosmer & Machado playing every day, Garcia filling in vs tough RHP @ 2B & 3B, and extreme need for 8 man pen with young staff, I just don't see Pads adding a middle INF. Eventually when supplanted by Urias, Kinsler would become "that other Middle INF", but that would have to be at expense of either a 5th OF or (more likely) 8th guy in pen... could see them eventually revolving door the 7th RP as well as the 5th SP.

Actually I see Hosmer - Kinsler - Tatis - Machado playing every game at the beginning of the season .... Garcia becomes a LHH PH option (likely with Brito or Cordero sent down). The risk factor is more that if they have a minor (non-IL) type injury and have to use Garcia in the line-up or deploying him as a PH earlier in the game creating no INF back-up. Only 1 reserve INF limits flexibility / double switches. At least a player like Pirela can cover both INF / OF if needed ... don't see any of the OF suitable for the INF (and personally don't like moving multiple players into unnatural positions). For team flexibility they would be better off (if they can find the correct bodies) to have a reserve OF covering all 3 positions (Brito or Cordero), a reserve INF who can cover all the 4 INF positions (Garcia) and a 3rd reserve that can be dropped into the INF or OF (Pirela-like).
Padres will be moving pitchers up and down all season even with a 13 man staff ... but think they are better served with a combo of pitching stability a 13 man staff gives combined with not wanting to burn out the inexperienced starters or the RP early with over use. Side note: early in the season ... not sure they have great RP options to rely on ... Reyes maybe then our favorite Perdomo and whomever they option down off the current 25 if they go with 12.
Could still go a lot of ways depending on who becomes available.

RP is thin at beginning of year due to injuries... but that is behind an 8-man pen, and should improve rapidly (see Regular season thread)
I have never been a fan of 8-man bullpens with a 25-man roster in NL; just limits moves you can make too much. But think Pads will need to go with 8 in pen a lot of this season. Frankly, on this specific team I'd rather see them go with 6 SP / 7 RP if going with 13 P; maybe as season progresses?
FENN, theoretically what you're saying makes sense: on a 4-man bench, 4th guy should be a versatile INF/OF. But: 1) way roster is composed with deep in OF only players makes it highly unlikely Pads option say Renfroe over new "versatile guy", and 2) low likelihood a better INF/OF/PH/BAT than Pirela A) becomes available at all right now, and B) is compelling enough to keep on the 25-man over an OF or P as the roster was set for O.D. even if available.
Obviously they're going to let Tatis play, but there will come a time he'll benefit from a bench day. I think Kinsler's days of starting 155+ are over. Not going to let Garcia just sit on bench as injury depth; think he'll start at least once/wk @ 2B/SS.

Agree with Brian re: the pitching breakdown. SP should be better pitchers- the more you keep the better.
As for Cordero, are we doing him a disservice having him ride pine in SD? Shouldn't he be getting AB's in AAA, especially after missing so much time last year?
Pirella needs to get called up. We need offense.

Hunter Renfroe is out of the Padres' lineup again Friday.
The Pads are going with Wil Myers, Manuel Margot and Franmil Reyes in their outfield for the second straight day, as it appears that Renfroe is clearly fourth in the pecking order right now. Obviously, it's discouraging for those that used a pick on him in fantasy leagues this spring. Franchy Cordero is also on the bench again with the Padres facing another lefty, and Austin Hedges is getting a second straight start at catcher.

Not surprised Reyes over Renfroe. Kind of surprised Mejia not getting this start with rookies going back to back games 3 & 4; thought Pads might want Hedges to handle those 1st starts. Looks like maybe Mejia starts 1 of those instead?

Brito is just a temporary band aid for Jankowski. But you guys are freaking me out about Morejon... !?

Since Holland is a LHP going with the same line-up as opening day makes sense.
Think they will insert Mejia (as a LHH) against a RHP and combined with Hedges maybe not matching up against that pitcher or after they feel Hedges deserves an off day. To start the season ... with the young SP and Hedges being fresh he should get the bulk of the starts while Mejia gets to bench tutoring from Barajas. As the season progresses we likely will see Mejia more to give Hedges more rest and Hedges seems to perform better coming back from some time off.
As for Renfroe not getting the start ... find that a bit interesting. In past years would have expected Renfroe and Reyes to get split time until one earns the full time role meaning Renfroe would start this game. Since I am way more optimistic about Reyes' future than Renfroe's, fine with me but was not sure SD saw it that way ... yet. Renfroe did not have a good ST (and neither did Cordero) and considering the Padres did not overlook that with either Allen or Quantrill and sent them down ... maybe Renfroe is the player option as a corner OF only and RHH.
Agree that Brito is just a place holder for Jankowski in about 3 months unless Cordero gets his act together in AAA and bumps him to open a 40 man roster slot.
Don't really buy a trade at this point ... at least not one that includes a Top 100 prospect such as Morejon ... can't see anyone on the market that desirable. On the other hand, a much lesser deal for a Renfroe plus one or two prospects rated 11 or higher maybe. Think Padres would prefer to promote Morejon that to trade him given their current view on accelerating the prospects and not convinced they would want to add the salary of an elite veteran for multiple years at this point. But we will see.
