Opening Day Lineup

PreviousPage 10 of 13Next

I know I am a couple of days late on this but pleased that out of the blocks Preller is sticking to his position that he wants the roster to have the best players to help them win now ... and apparently they believe Tatis has shown enough to warrant a starting role in the ML .... not worry about gaming for the extra year and deal with 2025 later. Really goes for Paddack too.

At least out of the blocks even more positive sentiment on top of the Machado signing ... and that is a good thing

If he struggles (doubt he will struggle THAT much) ... yeah the can send him down and still gain that extra year control but likely only if he really struggles.

Seems to me that the organization is taking actions that focuses on winning and treating the players fairly .... that gets around and may help either extending key players in the future and signing additional FA if needed.

SP evolvement is going to be highly debatable over the next couple of season. Padres have quite a collection of young, high ceiling (i.e. potential #1 - #2 types) .... not sure they want to put roadblocks to them getting to the ML and at the same time will have to be creative in trading the other ML/prospect SP who are more bottom of the rotation types.

IF SP plays out a 2021 or 2022 rotation of Gore - Patino - Morejon - Paddack - Espinosa maybe represents the high ceiling plan. Might send some like Baez to the pen.

Might get surprised by some of the others (think a Kluber surprise) but the time line for Lucchesi - Lauer - Strahm is really predicated on some near term results or they become some early trade fodder. Allen - Quantrill even have to show quickly being squeezed between the incumbents and the high ceiling arms on the fast track.

Richards should get the early run next season (1 year at that point but a proven ace) yet can he rebound that effectively in his first year back from TJ? Lamet is could see finding the pen if the incumbents and Richards hold the top 5 slots ... Lamet was not that good in his first year before TJ but has the stuff.

Sort of making my own argument for not dealing for a SP on a multi-year deal. Maybe at the trade deadline ... if the Wild Card is in sight ... aim for a soon the be FA as a two month rental.

Last year opening day....

3b-Chase Headley

SS- Freddie Galvis

This year ?

Manny freakin Machado

Fernando Tatis Jr.

I think at least 2/5 of our SP rotation that leads us into the deep postseason and another WS apperance is currently on the roster..

Nobody had Tatis in their opening day lineup.

Over/Under for Renfroe PAs for Padres in 2019?

I'll set the line at ... 300 ... and take Under ... anyone take Over?  If not, I can/will lower it 🙂

I will take the over IF the question is how many PAs with Renfroe get in the majors in 2019.

I think he gets over 300, but not all of them with the Padres.  I see either him and Reyes being combined with a Baez and another prospect to add a valuable piece  (CF or starter)

BTW looking at the potential rotation we will face with the Giants, does any of them really scare you?

MadBum- 11th season with the Giants!!  Still their ace

Derek Holland- Good rebound last year but was AWFUL for three years prior

Derrick Rodriguez- 2nd season

Jeff Shark- 34 with a negative WAR last year.

So besides MadBum does anyone in that rotation really look like they will dominate the new Padre lineup?

And while our pitching staff might be weak(ish), their outfield right now is Gerardo Parra/Steven Duggar/Mac Wiliamson.  I guess they still have Evan Longoria and the Panda.

My guess: Padres take 3 of 4 to start the Manny Machado era right

I'd take the over. People are really underestimating the solid spring he had. Outside of Machado there wasn't anyone consistently hitting the ball with as much authority as he was. That includes Reyes and Naylor. At this point there is very little doubt to the smoke engulfing Myers and the Padres wanting to move his contract.

Dereck Rodriguez- 2nd season

He could be a breakout candidate. Has a good pitch mix that plays vertically against launch angle fanatics.

That would require Renfroe starting about 40% of the games ... might be difficult IF Myers - Margot - Reyes stay healthy and perform plus Padres have said (implied) that Myers will not see much time in CF (he just is not a good defensive CF) but he will get the LF starts. So maybe it boils down to Reyes continuing his end of 2018 performance (and staying healthy) ... if he does Renfroe probably is closer to 150-250 PA as the 4th OF primarily spelling Reyes once or twice a week.

Maybe less IF Cordero firms up his games in AAA and gets the mid-season call-up as the potential impact LHH.
