Snell is soo frustrating, ugh!

We've known that forever. Dude just doesn't show up until mid July.

It will be interesting to see when (if) he kicks into has second half form of last season (where he was dominant).

Also, given that profile of being a 1/2 season ACE and a 1/2 season dud ... wonder what he will get as a FA after the season ... and will the Padres pay to keep him? Personally don't think he will change his profile at this age.

Fanatic definition:

a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme

Yep, sounds like most of us

I can't believe our fans were Booing Soto and the team last night.

On opening night?

Game One?!

What are we the Yankees now because we've spent money and have expectations?

Not really surprising ... Padres are no longer the plucky under dogs. All the hype over the winter and heading into the season (the team and individual players) raises the bar / expectations. Fans got their emotional investment cranked up .... so any sub-optimal performance by the Padres is more frustrating ... and results in minimal patience turning into boos.

Under promise and over deliver generally is a winning approach but over promise and under deliver (even if one game) is not good. Padres (except for Bogaerts) just did not look good on a rainy day ... adds to a lot of unhappiness.

Of course all that can change on a dime if the Padres go on a winning streak. Except for the diehards ... fans are fickle at the best of times.

Oh I get "why" they did it....but Opening Night?

ONE game?

Lol

Nope....classless in my opinion.

I would feel pretty dumb if I booed my team in the first game and they went on to win 100 games and win a World Series.

Then again,if I was the type to do this I would probably take credit for the Championship because I booed them.....lol

Should we take bets on how long BoMel keeps Soto in the 2 hole?

We will definitely need his thump before FTJ comes back.

Hit Kim in the lead off spot( you need to get Grisham locked into the 9 hole. Let him know exactly what's expected of him), followed by Jake.

Make Juan our cleanup hitter. He could hit 40+ HR's if he wasn't looking at so many pitches.

Soto's history shows if between hitting 2, 3, or 4 ... hitting 2nd is lower (135 wRC+) and 3rd/4th are better (over 150 wRC+). However, Soto in "high leverage" situations has only a 112 wRC+ (not really that good) and in the 150+ level for low / medium leverage. I guess tie that with a stat (don't remember where I saw it) that he really hits in games that have a > 4 run difference but less so much in close games.

For me Soto is still a bit of a mystery ... despite the national hype. Not sure he is an impact #4 hitter.

Hopefully Soto is what they say he is and settles in ... but just have not seen that elite clutch bat show up yet to carry the team ... and so far not a $23MM dollar contributor.

Side: don't think hitting 2nd or 4th will effect how he approaches the AB ... if he really believes he is the best hitter in MLB.

Agreed.

Soto needs a BIG year statistically to grab that half billion dollar contract.

A .400 OBP ain't gonna get it.

I know we can cherry pick stats to fit our narrative but the following might make us keep a critical eye on Soto's impact on the game (especially if considering that big long term deal).

Looking at the wRC+ for high leverage situations in 2022 (2021 for Tatis) for the top 5 in the Padres' batting order. Might his give a clue as to why the order is the way it is:

  1. Tatis ... 83
  2. Soto ... 69
  3. Machado ... 132
  4. Bogaerts ... 170
  5. Cronenworth ... 195

Will note that both Tatis and Soto had elite wRC+ in low and medium leverage situations. So, this 1 thru 5 maximizes the elite hitting of Tatis and Soto at the top while maximizing the elite high leverage hitting behind them.

Will 2023 follow that history? However, statistically that is a good starting point.

Listening to Melvin I'm certain he's going to bat Tatis leadoff.

He wants him to get more AB's but more importantly he wants him on the bases wreaking havoc in front of the other 3.

FTJ is certainly our most destructive base runner.

He needs to get as many AB's as humanly possible.

I think its fine, he gave a poor effort last night, especially on that fly ball from Bryant.

Play like S#*t you deserve to get booed.

As an Umpire I’m sure you’re used to it!😉

But,the Umpires aren’t the “San Diego” Umpires.
