So you don't think we make a serious offer to Moustakas?

If we don't sign Moose I'm rooting for Vosler!

Im starting to think they may gamble on Arenado or Rendon next winter, a bigger impact player than Moose. Plus, it does not seem there are any trades coming so no roster spot open and I dont see Moose signing a MiL deal with an invite to ST. Even though we all know Moose would make the team as soon as the can move Richards to the 60 day IL. Maybe a Jose Iglesias on a MiL deal to hold over SS for 2-3 months.

Vosler could be nice if he hits because of his LH bat.

Still think Moose is in play but if there are no other teams making a play for him it could be a "bargain" signing ... e.g. 1 year ($5MM) with incentives or going two years. (Good chance MILW steps up though). Market is very, very thin for 3B. So a very late signing and Boras will not hurry until Machado is off the market.

Guessing Rendon will resign with WASH (both seem interested) and Arenado will resign with COLO (both seem interested). This year's FA market for Machado and Harper might be making both a bit more flexible in taking a deal with their current homes.

Yeah I don't see Rendon or Arenado hitting the open market.

Arenado in particular would be crazy to leave Denver if they offer him a worthy deal.

Sign Moose to a 1-2 year deal...start the season with Moose-Urias-Kinsler-Hosmer around the horn.

Interesting that Iglesias is still out there. Galvis signed for $5MM/1 year with TOR .... not sure about anyone else having a starting SS as a priority. He also has some "low cost" short term competition for "filler role": Hechavarria and Escobar. Iglesias is better but if the need is not a major starting role ... lesser player at a lesser cost fits most teams better ... has to hurt Iglesias getting a good contract.

Given that Tatis has not played in AAA, he will likely get 3 months in EP. Urias could fill but why if his future is 2B and there is some risk on his hamstring injury lingering (TBD). IF Iglesias can be had on a one year deal (low cost) to bridge to Tatis might be a good move ... he still is elite defense. No problem ... in my mind .. to make roster room by dropping Pirela or Guerra. With luck they start with a plus defensive middle INF of Iglesias - Urias and work through 3B with Kinsler - Garcia - France.

Might also be able to flip him mid-season as SS go down.

I guess we should look at "filler" 3B options beyond Moose and taking the gamble on France - Garcia - Kinsler is to big if that does not pan out and Marwin Gonzalez goes (as expected) elsewhere.

1. (bit surprised he has not gotten more play) ... Josh Harrision (2B/3B). Versitility / decent bat still at age 31 sort of a poor man's Marwin G. Apparently a great clubhouse guy. He was likely ask a lot ... but at this late date a 1 year get a job deal seems probable.

2. (old friend #1) Logan Forsythe ... sure just filler at this point but has a track record ... could be a MiL signing with make good in ST.

3. (old friend #2) Y. Solarte ... he is what he is but serviceable.

.... hope spring eternal but not sure I see much in Vosler except some MiL power. Giving France a full season in AAA should help his development and if he smashes it in AAA ... all of the above could be mid-season flips (not for much) or not a big problem if just lost via waivers.

I guess whether it is SS or 3B fill ... looking at it as holding role in the first half on 2019 and nothing more while allowing the prospects to get further development in AAA. Mid-season change out.

Im going to call the rumor activity that we have seen this winter Preller doing his due diligence and seeing if he could snag a good new toy without paying the top dollar. Im afraid that this is pretty much the team we are going to see in camp, with the exception of maybe a Gio Gonzalez type SP. I think Preller is going to see what he has in France, and the young SPs and wait for Tatis and Urias to come into their own. Give Renfroe, Reyes, and Cordero another year of health and see how they perform and next winter is when we see some BIG moves based on the evaluation of 2019.

Lets hope for Rendon and Gerritt Cole next winter!

I always feel like AJ is exploring EVERY possibility, including many ideas or obscure routes (3 team trades, trading for 1st 3 Rule 5 picks, trade & extend) I know I would never have even thought of.  Also, since he's arrived I feel he's made extreme effort to be "in on" big names partly to dismantle the half truth that Pads will never go after a major FA; DO think the interest has been 'feigned, drive up the price' at times (Pablo Sandoval comes to mind).   I think the Machado & Harper interest may fit into the "due diligence" category, but I believe the interest in an elite MLB SP and Realmuto were "real"...

Would rank the "level of serious interest":  1) elite SP,  2) JTR, 3) Machado (but he's not interested), 4) Harper.

How much “more” is Harper worth to us if it means keeping him from the Giants?

Let me ask this way.

Let’s say the Padres made a formal offer to Harper of 7/$210.

Lets say Harpers agent came back saying they received an offer of 8/$240.

Would it make a difference to the Padres if that other offer was from an AL team or from SF?

If so.....to what extent?

Are we sure we would make an offer and not budge from it or would it depend?

I realize I’m grasping at straws here but I’m just curious how much a top player going to a competitor would matter and if anyone thinks any offer we made would be increased if need be or if it would have been a “take it or leave it” type of deal?

I think AJP has a number from ownership he can't go above ..say 7/225... But he has offered 5/150-175 supposedly ... so you alwaya leave some wiggle room but there is a STOP point... This is kind of like selling a Home priced at $10 mil ($300 mil + Harper ask).. But no one is coming to see it...then you drop the price to $6.5 and all of the sudden more people think they can get a bargain so they start offering 6.6...6.76...7mil...and a good agent will keep them biding as long as he can and drive that price up to as close to that original ask as he can...
