With SD and Hedges being mentioned. Depending on what the other pieces would be, I would be OK with saying good bye to Hedges. Of course they list the LAD as the most "motivated" to land him.
IF SD really wants JTR, could we vault ourselves to the top and lessen the prospect load if we also took on all of Starlin Castros contract, $11.6M this year and a club option for 2020 of $16M. Im sure he is not his old self at SS; however, if he could play SS until the arrival of Tatis and then play 3B until the arrival of Potts. That would allow Urias to stay at 2B and Kinsler can be the super utility guy along with Garcia. Thoughts on including Castro?
Castro ?
Not a chance...there is not enough mustard in the world to cover this Hot Dog. The guy is only about himself and could care less about anybody or any team....just a total club house jack wagon.
That one guy alone would make me give up my tickets and I've had tickets since 1969....and saw them play at the old Westgate Park when they were a minor league ( Fashion Valley )

https://madfriars.com/2019/01/09/madfriars-baseball-america-kyle-glaser/
I think he's right on when he says this ...
To me, the biggest weakness in the system is that I am not sure there are enough impact bats ... They need more and I’m not sure it’s all there internally.
My hope is that Owen Miller becomes an "impact bat" ... maybe he's our 2020 Opening Day 3B-man?
And ... what do you think of Manny Partida ... of whom Kyle sez ...
For a really deep pick, I would keep an eye on left-handed pitcher Manny Partida, a Mexican native, that was in the Dominican Summer League this year.
What system has enough impact bats and what constitutes an impact bat? If there is such a system do they have enough impact arms and what constitutes an impact arm? Do POTENTIAL impact bats have a better chance of contributing in the ML than a volume of quality position players coupled with impact arms?
Since no system has elite pieces for all aspects of the game (offense, defense, pitching) it is too easy to point out weaknesses. Pointless.

Quote from sportwarrior on January 10, 2019, 2:49 pmWhelp, Jed Lowrie just signed for the Mets for a reported 2/10 deal.
Is there anyone that wouldn't prefer him over Kinsler for 2/8?
----
EDIT: Sorry, looks like it's 2/20. A bit different, but still something I think I'd prefer to the $4m per year of dead money that Kinsler is gonna get.

What we don't know is what he was demanding before the Padres signed Kinsler (and his desire to play for a contender). He (his agent) may have really dropped their price after seeing the Kinsler / Dozier signings (low / short) while the market for 2B keeps shrinking and some other good options still on the market.

Quote from Friartuck on January 10, 2019, 3:03 pmIt was 2 years/$20 million, but that doesn't make Kinsler signing any better. Who's going to play shortstop? I hope they aren't going to move Urias there to accommodate a 36 year old Kinsler. Good chance of getting hurt, not having played there that much in his career. Can be a gold glove 2nd baseman.

This is true and a very fair point, but it's not like we were under any kind of gun to sign Kinsler. I think it caught most of us entirely by surprise. So while market conditions were different then, I'd argue it wasn't prudent at that time to address a need that wasn't at all pressing.

Quote from fenn68 on January 10, 2019, 3:19 pmI still don't really see the Realmuto trade with the Padres. Maybe: 1) they have a second deal moving him in place recouping what they had to give up in areas of greater need; 2) they have a pre-deal for an extension.
Can't see Realmuto signing an extension .... would need to cover two arb years (about $15-20MM) then at least 5 additional FA years of at least $25MM/yr .... that is a lot for a catcher ages 31-35 (FA years). Padres are not likely putting that kind of commitment to a catcher with all their other needs and Hedges-Mejia-Allen-Campusano lined-up. Meanwhile anything less would motivate Realmuto to hit FA in 2 years at age 30.
So, 2 years of Realmuto makes little sense at the level of return Miami is demanding unless there is a second deal. Remember 2019 is basically a throw away of his talent. Side: don't think shedding any more payroll is the motivator in dealing Realmuto ... first they want ML / ML ready talent. Tucker (MLB Top 10 from HOU) is sort of the baseline to START building the return. Even with the motivated LAD they wanted Bellinger off the ML roster since Verdugo (MLB #32) was not enough for the lead piece. If that is where Miami is at now .... they must be pushing for Tatis ... Hedges would be a secondary piece.
Now bet all the interested teams are still talking waiting for Miami to crack and lower the demand. Preller could hang around to see if Miami will accept a volume of lower level prospect (excluding the maybe 6 or 7 he will not deal). Maybe keep Realmuto and deal Hedges in a different deal giving 2 years for Mejia / Allen to step up. If the one elite is not in the mix form any team ... Padres are in a good position with high quality of volume better than most of the other bidders.
A lot of moving parts in this deal.

I don't see it as pointless ... it's a reminder ... our system is very pitching heavy ... and winning a World Series does seem to require more balance than the Padres' org currently has ... so the opinion that the Padres are out of balance, with not enough impact bats, seems a practical reminder.
I prefer what the Padres have ... more impact arms than impact bats ... assuming one has to choose ... because I think it will be easier to find and sign an impact bat via FA ...
BTW, Glaser was asked this question: "What are the greatest strengths and weakness of the system?" ... so ... are you saying it was pointless of MadFriars to ask about weaknesses? Personally, I'm glad they did ... I want as much criticism from outside of our fandom as possible ... keeps my hopes a bit more realistic 🙂

Quote from fenn68 on January 10, 2019, 5:14 pmInteresting note: only 4 FA have signed with NL West teams (not all that exciting):
LAD (1) ... RP Kelly ... the biggest signing as a plus RP
SF (1) .... RP Venditte .. 33 year old switch arm pitcher
SD (2) .... Kinsler and Richards ... not even sure why
COL and AZ are just sitting on the sideline.
A little more than a month before ST .... unbelievable inaction.
