Great pick up for Lockett.

Sure wish there was something to talk about........anyone?

Padres Outright Allen Cordoba, Release Colin Rea

=================

A good outcome ... hopefully Cordoba has some more time to recover from injury in 2019 and can display his hitting potential and overall athletic skills. Probably in AA .... I thought he really had potential so getting another year (at least) on a non-roster status can only be good.

Rea's release is not a surprise .... getting up in age for a prospect, did not rebound well performance-wise for TJ, and not all that great before. Would not get the playing time given all the arms lurking in AAA/AA.

MAYBE some action during the Winter Meetings in 2 weeks but listening to some of the national pundits ... might be a slow winter for FA signings / deals since:

1. Harper and Machado ... seeking MEGA deals will likely drag on until near ST ... and that will create a domino effect with next tier FA waiting to see what their deals are and which teams are left out ... but with money and needs.

2. the slow rate of signing actually seemed to work in the clubs benefit ... perceived lower cost deals by waiting out the players

3. the trend towards younger / versatile players leaves a lot of 30+ / one dimensional players finding it hard to get offers ... wait them out and a surplus of bodies is created

4. trade market ... in part ... is linked to the above too .... not much action in dealing for older / costly players even if they are good NOW.

The reporters will be doing more "speculation" and making up "good fits" ... but actual deals ????????

OK ... that thesis lasted one minute:

Braves To Sign Josh Donaldson

1:35pm: The Braves are in agreement with Donaldson on a one-year, $23MM contract, Rosenthal tweets. The contract is pending a physical.

=======

They also signed McCann to platoon with Flowers at C ... so seemed to set-up 3B and C for 2019. Makes me wonder what they plan for Camargo (2018 3B) considering Riley their future 3B will likely be in AAA poised for a 2010 debut once Donaldson moves on.

I guess they may still be seeking a RF and some SP/RP but could be in a good position to make another run at the NL East ... clearly jumped ahead of any moves by Wash / Phil / NYM ... wonder if that adds pressure to those teams to move on adds?

NYY just DFA'd Ronald Torreyes ... 26 year old RHH 2B/SS/3B (basically a fringe utility guy) who in 576 ML AB has a 281/310/375 slash line. Think bench INF as a platoon complement to LHH Garcia who they added earlier. Both versatile at all three INF slots and both are at least serviceable with the bat.

Chance Padres claim him then, in turn, DFA Asuaje who is a one dimensional 2B who has not hit in the ML (and is aging quickly) or maybe Pirela. Think Torreyes still has one more minor league option year as an insurance policy ... even if not, still would seem like an upgrade to the INF bench strength.

I'm well over Asuaje at this point, so I'm all for it.

I was shocked when I saw the Braves signed Donaldson.

$23 mil for a 3B they don’t really need.

Is this an indication they will trade Camargo?

I had suggested a couple times we ask about him and/or Riley.

A move like this lends me to believe it would be Camargo the one available....if any.

I have this “feeling” Camargo will get even better than he was last year......living in Ga. I saw a lot of him.

Id be all for acquiring him if the cost isn’t too great......which I’m thinking the Braves just lost a little leverage now

that they added another 3B.

Would they sign Donaldson without a corresponding move already in the works?

Have to think Atlanta is going to make some more (and noteworthy) moves. Signing Donaldson for big money and McCann ... both older on 1 year deals has the look of win in 2019 moves.

$23MM for Donaldson and $2MM for McCann is a nice chunk of cash (albeit for 1 year) ... not sure how much that leaves in the bank to sign a big time FA ... actually more than one since they were rumored looking at a RF and pitching. They do have a good stock of MiL arms to fill some spots but still contracts could be an issue.

OK ... this just might work. Padres trade for Camargo to fill 3B (still pre-arbitration and controlled for 4-5 years) ...  good (in 2018), low cost, controllable. Myers goes to Atlanta to fill a corner OF slot ... 4 years control at $63MM with only $3MM due in 2019 (I assume the amortized bonus money has already been paid by the Padres) .... from just up the road from Atlanta ... still can be productive in that line-up in a position of need for the next few years .... plus when is salary jumps to $20MM Donaldson's $23MM goes away ... a fit. Might be some other pieces to balance it out if it is not balanced now.
