OFFSEASON 2023-24

PreviousPage 94 of 184Next

Wacha getting from KC exactly what the Padres passed on - 16M for the next 2 years.  Despite his injury history, this still seemed reasonable to me because pitchers always seems to get injured and it is the production over the season's IP that determine worth - even at 120-130 IP, 16M appeared fair given the outrageous numbers lesser pitchers are signing for.  KC now has 40% of the Padres 2023 rotation!

Rumor: KC will sign Wacha for 2 years / $32MM … the same as the Padres’ option that they turned down. Given the rest of the SP market … seems low … apparently teams are really concerned about his shoulder.

To be clear I'm not hot to trade Merrill.

But if we're pinching pennies right now and need to add an arm or two and a couple outfielders I'm not sure how else to get quality without doing it via trade.

I agree Merrill replacing Kim makes the most sense "after" this year as Kim will be $12-$15 mil per at minimum.

But what about 2024?

Maybe the Kim situation will be the tell?

Are we punting(to some extent) 2024 and powering payroll to set us up better for '25 and beyond?

They won't say they are...but trading Kim or Merrill, or keeping Kim and letting him walk, may be the sign that explains the plan for the immediate future.

Padres just need to decide on what they plan on doing with Kim. Offer him an extension now and see if he takes it. Yes this will make our payroll a bit higher tomorrow but will allow you to make a decision NOW on Merrill/Crone and Boegarts. This gives Preller and the Padres a clearer plan and allows them to move forward. Kim is 28 Cronenworth is 29 Merrill is 20.

IMO, you trade Merrill if you think you can win this season with what you can get for Merrill and the rest of the team and payroll. Merrill Iriarte and Mazur...can that get you Arozarena and Luzardo. Those two combined will cost 12.9 mil. Leaving 15 mil to go. Rodriguez at reliever should cost 8 mil. That leaves 7 mil to play with. You can ride it out with Crone at first for another year and hope he gets back to what he was doing his rookie season. Marsee starts in center with Azocar filling in if he struggles. Can sign Profar for 3.5-4 mil as well to leave 3-4 mil left unless you unload Crone. Or...use that leftover money to sign Bauer. Get two starters, Left Fielder, Bench options and figure out DH, LF and CF and give up 3 good prospects. Do you risk giving up Merrill without a long term deal in place with Kim?? If not, have to give up another really good prospect for a team to eat most (if not all) of Crone's salary to resign Kim long term.

Carpenter and Kerr and cash considerations to ATL for OF Drew Campbell.

Carpenter and Kerr and cash considerations to ATL for OF Drew Campbell.

A pure move to clear SOME of Carpenter's money ... basically ATL bought Kerr.

Campbell is really a 26 year old non-prospect but technically needed a player going to SD for this to be a trade. Never had high expectations for Kerr. Did not see the report of how much of Carpenter's contract the Padres will be paying.

LHRP are a bit short for the Padres (so far) with only Cosgrove and Morejon. Maybe a precursor to a FA signing of a LHRP?

Since Campbell is non-roster ... the 40 man sits at 32 ... and a chunk of them are at best 4A players ... so a LOT of room for adds if the non-roster prospects show well in ST.

Not sure yet how much this saved us but we are running out of left handed pitchers….are we making these cost saving moves to sign players or just to save money?

Certainly we still need a couple outfielders and pitchers.

or in this case just move on from Carpenter taking up space on the roster. He is due $5.5MM ... so what is a LHRP of Kerr's skills worth on the open market ... has to be enough to at least make ATL interested.

side: does it seem odd that Shildt has not yet named his assistant coaches to replace the departed coaches? Would have though during the Winter Meetings something would have popped.

Padres include $1.5MM … so save $4MM … well worth Kerr being included.
