OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from fenn68 on December 4, 2023, 9:41 amQuote from Randy Manese on December 4, 2023, 9:25 amLee gets posted today and with Kim, San Diego has the advantage early IF they don't trade Kim AND they clear some money for a salary that is close to what Lee is going to be offered (13-15M range is likely the high end). You have to remember that Kim was a better power/speed prospect than Lee, so that comes into play. If Padres wait longer to trade Soto or trade Kim then Lee signs elsewhere. I know we need SP, but Lee would be a great fit given his career OPS (mostly OBP) and defensive ability. Not a power source, so some teams will back off of him and others may look at Kim and other ex-Korean players and believe there might be a problem with Lee hitting upper level velocity, but Lee's got great bat to ball skills and walks more than he strikes out, so he would be good at the top of the lineup ahead of our power hitters. Lee is the kind of hitter Seattle is looking for.
Agree SEA might be in play for LF … they do have a pretty good CF. Hearing more along the lines of SF going to make the big push.
However, maybe I give SD a bigger chance than others. Clearly pushing to move Soto AND Grisham … clears money and opens CF and no clear CF alternative. Don’t want to move Tatis to CF … Marsee is more of an unknown … Azocar is not it. I would add that can see with that avoided money a push to extend Kim freeing up Cronenworth as a trade chip. Do need to get some legit SP back for Soto and maybe Cronenworth (at least a ML #5). Then money still on the table for other upgrades.
Campusano - ??? - Bogaerts - Kim - Machado - Marsee - Lee - Tatis - ??? Is a good base offense with augmentation at 1B, DH, back-up C with a fair amount of money to deploy.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 4, 2023, 10:54 amI just can't believe anyone would want Cronenworth and his new contract after a down year and injury.
I don't think we can afford to give away money to get rid of guys these days so I have to believe we need to keep Jake and hope he regains his value this year.Could attach him to Soto but i think using the Soto trade to move Grish and/or Carp makes more sense right now.
Would certainly help if we could move him back to 2B.
I keep thinking about the Marlins when it comes to Crone and Kim and even Soto...it's really a shame they had 3 good young SP's go down last season or they would have the pieces to trade with us.
They need a SS and a CF'r....I also really like Jesus Sanchez who they haven't been giving the opportunity to play against Lefties.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 4, 2023, 10:58 amDigging deeper into the NYY prospect list it sure seems like they can come up with a deal if both teams are motivated.
They have young pitching galore.
I am not a Schmidt fan....bt even after him they still have King/Thorpe/Hampton/Brito/Vasquez/Beeter/Fitts/Carr/Warren.
King/Pereira/and any two of these others and I'm in.
Or exchange Pereira with Jones or Dominguez.
Especially if we are serious contenders for Lee.

Quote from fenn68 on December 4, 2023, 11:28 amAgree NYY have the depth to mix and match (if they want to) and Preller has a lot of choices if he wants to). Unless another team shows up with a compelling ML SP option (or two), the major stumbling block will be King ... older, very good 2023 but only 2 years control, low cost so would fit both teams rotation and can see the Padres wanting him for immediate help. However. NYY have him listed as their #3 SP (Schmidt #4), so moving him may hurt their 2024 chances offsetting, in part, the add of Soto.
More likely Padres back off King ... use the avoided Soto money for the pitching ... but get better quality in the full package they do get from the NYY (will always debate who is the better prospect).
Thorpe RHSP (Top 100 in AA) ... Pereira RHH OF (Top 100 in AAA) ... then one of the other prospect pitchers ... then for the icing on the cake Lombard (A ball SS who will end up in the OF as he grows). Plus NYY take Grisham.
NYY better for 2024 by not losing any key roster pieces and SD has the chance to win more in 2024 if the money deployed is smartly used on pitching plus a better future as soon as 2025 (or mid-2024).

Quote from BoosterSD on December 4, 2023, 12:55 pmI looked at the top 100 prospect rankings on mlb.com when it comes to the NYY being discussed in trade for Soto.
Jones, Dominguez, and Pereira are listed 73, 74, and 75th in order they are listed here. So really is there a difference?
Hampton is listed at 95, with Thorpe listed at 99. And Lombard Jr not even in the Top 100.
I know that they are probably ranked in different order on some other websites, and obviously Preller has his own rankings. However, once Preller comes off the total number that he is looking to get, a deal will get done IMO.
And my final point, are any of the pitching prospects that much better than what SD already has in our system? Probably not, and since I believe that some of these prospects will be used for trade fodder to get our SP that we need, I dont know if matters all that much who we get.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 4, 2023, 1:39 pmI've said all along....give us Thorpe/Hampton/Jones/other prospect and lets roll....Jones IMO is the best OF prospect they have and he's a SD boy.
In 113 games in AA he had 16 HR and 43 SB.
I like Thorpe and Hampton better than all the others anyway....they just won't likely be in the rotation in April.
So if we take the $ saved and sign a FA SP or two we're fine and now VERY deep in the rotation going forward with Snelling,Iriarte,Thorpe,Hampton,Mazur,Lesko et al. in the wings.

Quote from fenn68 on December 4, 2023, 1:39 pmIf they can’t get a SP that is useful in 2024 … I might just shift away from the near ML ready SP (maybe take one) who, as you say, are not that much better than the internal prospects. That sends be to Pereira since if they move Soto and Grisham … need a some quantity to contend for an OF slot (Jones not ready and Dominguez is injured). At that point, shift to my earlier thought of going down to their lower levels for some really high upside talent … side: don’t get sidetracked by the MLB ratings since some of the truly newcomers to professional ball have not had the exposure to get the approximate evaluation (these list are from earlier in 2023.
Just try to avoid the no immediate impact and just low ceiling types if they make it.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 4, 2023, 1:44 pmWhile the Yankees and NY media have hyped their minor league prospects, you are correct in stating that their pitching prospects are not ranked that high by either mlb.com or Baseball America, although the latter has Hampton at #49 but agrees with Thorpe in the 90's. For this reason, they are going to have to include King in the deal because if Toronto is really offering Manoah and Ricky Tiedemann, the latter is rated higher than all the Yankee and Padres pitching prospects and that is a much better SP pitching package for the Padres. Tiedemann was a standout in the Arizona Fall League and is like a left-handed Lesko in his pitching repertoire.
Yankees cannot afford to lose Soto to Toronto, even for 1 year before free agency, so Preller may get more out of this deal than we might think, especially if Grisham is involved. I agree that outside of King, many of the Yankee prospects probably will be moved in trade for a quality SP, like Burnes, Cease or Bieber. Yankees could go ahead and sign Bellinger but he is MEH compared to the impact that Soto will have on the franchise AND I'm sure they think they will be able to re-sign him off of Free Agency.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 4, 2023, 2:06 pmWith the idea of reducing payroll, and filling spots that need addressed. It appears that Alec Burleson (LHH 1B & LFer) might be available from STL. He is not yet arb eligible and they are looking for bullpen help.
Would you look at trading Suarez if they are interested, or maybe a combo of Suarez and someone like Kerr, and ? for Burleson.
I know our bullpen is not the strongest at the moment, but Burleson might be a nice add should we move Crone.
