OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from BoosterSD on November 28, 2023, 12:44 pmThe only way I could see an Ohtani signing for SD is IF, SD signs Ohtani and then trades Soto. Would obviously need to have a low dollar amount for Ohtani this season, under Soto's $33M. Other improvements/adds would still be need to be made, as Ohtani will not pitch this season. Still would need at least 3 SPs.
Ohtani replaces Soto's bat, and then becomes SD ace and DH in 2025 and forward.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 28, 2023, 1:20 pmI'll believe we are trading a 25 year old Hall of Fame player in a "win now" moment when it happens.
I have to imagine AJ would have to be completely blown away by an offer and I don't see that happening when the teams interested can just wait one year and sign him and lose zero prospects/players.
I'm thinking AJ is approaching this first season without Seidler as a WWPD season.
So,with that in mind,I don't think Seidler would be supportive of trading Soto is he were here.

I just dont think the money is there. Although last season, the money just kept showing up.......so we shall see.

I guess this all depends on our reality with payroll.
Everyone and their brother say we have to trade Soto and reduce payroll...except for anyone with the Organization that is....plus
the same "experts" are saying we are in on Ohtani,Yamamoto and Lee?
So which is it?
In a perfect world we don't see any of the above mentioned prospects unless there are injuries late in the season...then get them ready to start '25.
I think people are too caught up in treating the reported 200m mark as a hard cap. Bump that up a little bit and they could still be players in free agency while dropping payroll a significant amount. Hopefully the winter meetings bring some clarity here soon.

Carlos Slim has plenty.
Just need another one of the owners to buy in and agree to spend.
That and a new TV contract.

I was under the impression that MLB has told SD that they exceeded their revenue ratio 2023 and need to get back to that level. And even if all the owners of SD wanted to spend another $300M this season, it sounds like MLB would not allow that to happen. Especially with no TV contract in place, and MLB producing the broadcasts.

Actually that is what I understand is the major factor in curbing the payroll … don’t know the specifics of the debt service ratio nor the specifics of the Padres financial structure but every indication is that the Padres set themselves to violate the league rules … maybe made problematic with the loss of TV revenue … but thinking a lot of this is out of the ownership’s hands.

Quote from sportwarrior on November 28, 2023, 4:40 pmI feel like the loss of TV revenue has been confoundingly underreported. That deal was worth $60m+ annually, and I think we received maybe one payment? I can't fathom how that doesn't help explain the $50m loan or our debt service issues. Of course, that said, the writing was on the wall last offseason regarding the collapse of Bally's, so I'm not entirely sure why management would have spent money assuming they'd receive max value under that TV deal.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 28, 2023, 5:19 pmWell, maybe the solution is for Helu to call his cousin Carlos Slim and have Slim create a broadcast company and then have that company buy the TV rights to the Padres.
And since it would be an international broadcast company, lets say a $150M per year?

My understanding is that more than a handful of teams are in violation of the debt ratio rules. Others are using creative accounting to be in compliance. The league looks the other way and really only gets involved in emergency situations. The only examples I found of the league taking action were with the Mets after the Madoff scandal and the Dodgers when the McCourt's fought over them in the divorce.
