OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from MrPadre19 on November 27, 2023, 9:35 amQuote from BoosterSD on November 27, 2023, 9:11 amIt appears that ATL has had discussions with CWS regarding Cease. Since it looks like he is available, and suggested arb price of $8.8M, and controlled through the 2025 season, what would it take to get him?
Would you trade Kim, Zavala, and a couple other MiL for Cease?
I doubt CHW want Kim for one season when they aren't expected to contend.
Probably take Merrill....or Zavala/Marsee/++

What went wrong with Cease last season …. ERA way up to 4.50 … FB down a bit in velo and was “hittable” with a higher BAA? Not close to the guy from 2021-2.
Two years control at an estimated ARB of $8.8MM in 2024.
CWS would want prospects (take no salary back) and try to price him nearer his 2021-2 performance level since he is only 27. Probably will not come down much since they could let him have a strong start 2024 and swing a big deal at the trade deadline.
Probably the lead would be from Merrill, Snelling, Lesko, Salas quartet … at least one Top 100 type somewhat near ML ready.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 27, 2023, 11:10 amYeah I'm not giving up Snelling or Salas.
Rather keep Merrill too but considering his value and we'd have to find a position for him trading him does make the most sense.
As far as Lesko I wouldn't think his value would be too high around the league...at least not a much in a trade as he's worth to us.
Too far away from MLB and not far enough away from major surgery.
Probably wouldn't get enough for him this off season...would rather wait a year before deciding on him.

Remember Kim is a FA after this season ... and if he performs like in 2022 some team that wants a SS is going to give a BIG long term contract ... Padres need to determine if they can re-sign him BEFORE they deal Merrill. Then consider the rumors that the Padres would be willing to move on from Cronenworth (and his contract).
Could see 2025 with Merrill - Bogaerts the middle INF.
Would not move Merrill until the Kim and Cronenworth futures are settled. Keep in mind that Merrill represents quality at league minimum for 3 years allowing the Padres to pay to fill out the rest of the roster.

Quote from sportwarrior on November 27, 2023, 11:48 amI know trading prospect capital is an unavoidable part of the game, but wow do I not want to trade any of our guys. At this point, I'd rather lose Soto and retain our farm than sell the farm off for a couple bounce back arms and one year of Soto.

Quote from fenn68 on November 27, 2023, 12:15 pmSo far ... unusual for the Padres ... the rumor mill of Preller even being "interested" in almost every FA and trade option has be basically silent. Some reporters suggesting a "fit" but very little suggesting that moving to a level of active pursuit. Preller is normally quite on these things but agents / other teams usually provide for the rumor mill.
Winter Meetings are starting in a week. I can's see Preller standing still but can't see him being very effective unless the payroll limit has been set and the Soto issue resolved. No one is going to wait for the Padres to figure things out ... players will sign / teams will make trades.
Something has to happen soon or the Padres end up a non-contender with the current roster and low cost tinkering.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 27, 2023, 12:43 pmI know that a Soto trade is very possible, and many would like to find a new home for Crone due to his money, and ship out Grisham because of his lack of offense, not to mention Carpenters blah performance.
If all three trades happen, SD would really become way to RHH heavy. To balance that out, you would have to almost guarantee that both Pauley and Marsee were ready to play starting the 24 season, just to balance out the batting order.

Quote from 3fingersplit on November 27, 2023, 12:49 pmWhoa…pump the brakes guys
you all know I hate 3-4 for 1 trades…unless it’s a generational talent then maybe but while I said Cease is worth a look by AJ he is not worth our top guys in the minors…we already gave up a ton for Soto

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 27, 2023, 1:00 pmI don't think there's much chance we're trading Cronenworth after that extension, down year and injury.
Same can be said for Grisham and Carpenter.
If we don't want them no one else will either.
I think we also need to be cautious about expecting every prospect to become a major league regular.
There's a reason we traded like 60 guys over the last few years and only miss about 5.
If we are not keeping Kim i could see holding on to Merrill but even then i don't see Crone going anywhere so SS/2B is still occupied with X and Crone.
Merrill is either in LF....1B....or traded.
As bad as we need "quality" pitching my guess still is traded.
Keep the young arms and Salas....but the window is still open,it may not be in 2026

Quote from BoosterSD on November 27, 2023, 1:01 pmI know its almost improbable since Preller would be admitting to making a mistake. However, I would love to call the new GM of BOS and say, I will send Bogaerts back to BOS and $55M in cash, and take a couple of these MiLs.
Then sign Kim to a longer deal, and move Crone back to 2B.
