What is the sense of Lee defensively as a CF? I have read different comments for plus to minus plus a question on his recovery from his ankle injury.

I'm not worried about CF , we have the potential #1 CF currently playing RF . Tatis would be the best in half a season .

Think some in the Padres’ front office would like to make that move (not all).

If that becomes Preller’s view … maybe they sign Lee for a corner OF spot (RF to replace Tatis)? Could argue that Tatis-Lee (or Lee-Tatis) is better offensively than Grisham-Tatis with no material loss in defense. With the “prospects” not likely ready that makes for a logical upgrade in 2024 without much of a net cost.

Still have Azocar around as the back-up CF … low cost / cheap.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this but...what's going on with the Padres TV deal?

For those of us not in the area....what's the scuttlebutt?

Are we going to be a charity case for '24 or will we have an influx of big money?

Inquiring minds want to know...

ZERO word on a pending TV contract for 2024. Only thing that seems firm from MLB is that they will NOT continuing backfilling money from the terminated TV deal. So for now all the TV money is gone … nil … zip … zero.

Even unclear on how TV will be handled … although most are assuming the same as the end of 2023 via MLB productions (don’t know who has to pay for the production costs). The other speculation is that the Padres may go full streaming via subscription. That would create a lot of tricky structure / compensation structure with MLB as it can impact other teams and their future TV approach v MLB Network. MLB wants to control it all.

Would not be surprised to hear a resolution as late as late March.

Expanding our potential trade options due to two separate inputs today:

1 MLBTR is doing their write-up on the Blue Jays and included is that they want to add INF offense (veteran type). TOR has money.

2 On one of the talk shows the host indicated the Padres are interested in working a deal moving Cronenworth … he is a middle INF veteran.

Possible match … Padres get out of a bad contract (so don’t expect a good return) while Blue Jays get a veteran INF relatively cheaply for now for just money.

Clearing Cronenworth’s contract help a little in 2024 but maybe more importantly clears money for years giving some additional room to fix the 26 man roster … or maybe extend Kim.

Just another speculation route.

I've seen rumors of every high-paid Padre available for trade, even those with no-trade contracts, except for Machado, Musgrove and Darvish.  On the other hand, saw the Boras said Padres aren't trading Soto so who/what do you believe?  Teams with a lot of money to spend are going to spend it - let's see if any of that benefits the Padres.

At the point can’t trust any comments … especially from agents.Heard Boras’ comment on Soto … basically that Preller told him the was in the Padres 2024 plan. However, if listening to the whole thing … he did leave wiggle room if given the right offer Preller may trade him.

Maybe making Soto less likely a trade chip … Boras increases the interest on his current FA players? At the same time he may be helping Preller by suggesting Soto is not being moved without a significant offer. Bid goes up?

Should note that Boras also said Preller told him the Padres have no financial issues and can spend if needed. Take that for what it is worth.

Some reports out that the league has decided to end the GM meetings early because of a virus that has swept through the venue.

IF the TOR-SD match-up is there for Cronenworth what could be a trade structure?

Probably not a 1 foe 1 but consider:

Cronenworth ($7.3MM in 2024 but contract goes through 2030 moving to $12.9MM annually). That is not an appealing contract based on his 2023 performance … a reason for the Padres to move him and a reason for another team (if they take the contract) not to add quality prospects in the return. From another team’s perspective, he may still hold appeal as an All-Star  2B with plus defense. Padres beyond the payroll make room for Merrill and Bogaerts in the middle INF and maybe allow them to extend Kim. Makes sense just to move Croney for contract relief but GM will always seek some type of player return.

Padres need SP … Blue Jays have excellent SP (#1-4) … and a few high quality prospects coming soon. Somewhat on the bubble is their #5 Alex Manoah who had a terrible year in 2023 plus some shoulder problems. However, in 2021-22 he was excellent … he will be at league minimum with 4 control years.  Do the Padres think they can fix him (mainly control issue)?

There is sort of an odd match of two players coming off poor 2023 but good prior years and each filling the acquiring team’s need. Just might make sense … but think the Padres may have to add a mid-range prospect to justify TOR taking on the contract commitment.

Alex Manoah would be a huge get, in my opinion, but if the Blue Jays are really shopping him would Cronenworth be near the top of the list?  Love the thought, but even with a mid-range to upper range prospect, this might not be enough to entice Toronto to take Cronenworth and his bad contract.  I do think Niebla can help get Manoah back on track, so I have my fingers crossed.
