OFFSEASON 2023-24

If available, the focus will be on Sasaki for the next international signing period; if he is not eligible, then have not heard who the next top prospect is but the Padres will have lots of money to pursue him or spread it out among several others.  Sasaki, however, won't ever spend a day in the minors so it's not really reloading the farm system.

From what I've read, the 2024 draft is very fluid meaning you could possibly get as good a player where the Padres draft as you would in the top 10-15.  There is a dearth of high school talent but a lot of college prospects, particularly pitchers, who flash but also disappoint.  Padres have been very good lately at identifying the wheat from the chaff and we'll see how they do this year.

While we've lost basically the next tier beyond our top prospects in Thorpe, Iriarte and Zavala there are  a number of players who could break out that are coming back from injury, have not yet played, or showed flashes of late season development.  Henry Baez, Braden Nett, Lamar King, Jr, Jagger Haynes, Isaiah Lowe, Tyler Robertson, JD Gonzalez and Kannon Kemp are a few to watch and many will be in Lake Elsinore to start the season.  LE and San Antonio will be the two most interesting Padres minor league teams because of the talent that should be there most of the season.

Agree that Vasquez to the minors makes some sense to work him as a starter poised to be a call-up when (if) either a SP is needed mid-season or come in as a long man freeing up Waldron to start. Being on the 40 man helps. Gives some flexibility with the non-roster prospects allowing more development time.

Sure looks as though Avila is out of the picture (and DFA) … but scratching my head on Patino vs Kolek. Like the idea of both achieving their potential … but the logical side of my brain considered that a long shot. Patino is still relatively young but he is a waiver claim suggesting TB gave up and apparently no other team claimed him … clearly no lower team in the priority order. IF the Padres are building to contend … not sure he will help and if he fails he will have to be DFA later. Kolek was left exposed to Rule 5 by Seattle … never a great sign for a presumed ML ready talent. His tease is the second half on 2023 when move to the pen and was a dominate RP … sub-1 ERA. Each has their command issues. Patino has a good chance of clearing waivers and re-signed while Kolek has to be offered back to Seattle who would take him.

So, would go with Kolek to further see if he has it for the ML … if not offer him back later and dip into the AAA RP such as Jacob, Estrada, or Reynolds.

Dennis Lin is saying the Preller is still being aggressive in seeking another move. Have to think that is a bat (be it a FA or trade).

Does not have to be a “star” quality but at least an “average” ML type who probably can play good OF defense given the risk around injury to any of the three incumbent OF and limited back-up.

Side: beginning to think Pauley is the DH/1B/3B after Machado returns to 3B so an added bat probably is not a DH/1B only type. Add an OF to that mix and Profar becomes that intended super utility guy off the bench.

My guess is unfortunately Tommy Pham at $4.5M.

Price is right … player is wrong.

Duvall signs with ATL for $3MM … not sure if Duvall did not like SD or Preller has some real reservations on Duvall … but that is a very very reasonable price.

So, despite my preference, Pham may be the man … baring another trade.

Just saw this. My first choice was Rosario, up to $4M guarantee, 2nd was Duvall $3M. So Preller either really likes Pham, or there is a trade on the way.

Would prefer a trade over Pham.

Honestly, whiffing on Duvall and Rosario for such cheap deals signals that they're focused on the likes of Taylor and/or Pham (who they must view as more than incremental upgrades), or they're aiming even higher. If the latter is true, that almost certainly would mean a trade of some kind. We heard rumblings earlier in the offseason about interest in Jarren Duran, but who else could we theoretically be targeting for OF via trade?

Kepler? Carlson? Or a truly crazy hail mary for Arozarena?
