Cease likely pushes both Vasquez and Waldron to the pen … so still a crowded group.
Side: adding Cease and dropping Wilson and Iriate actually reduces the players on the 40 man (not that they need to) and the soon to come DFA of out of option types will give a LOT of space for non-roster adds now … and during the season.

That’s tough. But he is still very much a hit or miss guy. I’m iffy on this trade despite liking our new rotation. We shall have to wait and see

Thorpe/Iriarte/Wilson/Zavala

That is one I did not expect.
Just speculation that the Padres are comfortable with Head coming up as a CF (right behind Zavala) and Marsee sitting in AAA for help starting in 2024. IF Merrill remains in the OF with Tatis … maybe easier to move Zavala.

I really would have preferred Dillon Head replace Zavala, but alright.
Like fenn said, Zavala is the one name I wasn't expecting (or mentally prepared for). He and Iriarte could be difficult to cope with if they pan out.

Personally I’d prefer to keep Head than Zavala. Not sure Zavala will ever have any plus tools. He might have more power than Head but Head seems have more plus tools. Would have liked to keep both.

The national media really like Cease. Some thought that getting out of CHI with a more hitter friendly park and a bad team and put him at PETCO on a better team will get him closer to his 2022 season … which got him #2 in the AL CY Young voting …. 2.20 ERA.
He does post up for every start going 32-32-33 starts over the past three season and should get them around 180 innings. Big strikeout guy. Having Niebla as the pitching coach should help.
Could go either way but even if in the middle around a 3.00 ERA … that would be a big boost in stabilizing the SP.

Zavala and Steven Wilson are also going to Chicago…field player and a bullpen piece…that is crazy…I sure hope this works out

Thorpe won’t be a top of the rotation guy, Wilson is okay but the future of Iriarte and Zavala will go a long way to deciding this trade. Prospects fail so much if I’m guessing, Padres probably win this.
