I keep seeing Duran (BOST) as a potential trade target for CF by the Padres ... but could it be for LF?
Duran debuted as a CF and showed he can hit but not a good defensive CF. Breaking him down a bit vs CF with > 350 PA:
Overall WAR 2.4 (15th out of 35) and in only slightly over a half season ... that will generate a lot of trade value considering 5 years control and at league minimum. Expect to have to use a top prospect pitcher plus to land him.
His offense was the calling card with a 120 wRC+ ... 8th out of the 35. However, his dWAR as a poor -3.2 which landed him 32nd or of the 35. Most of the scouting reports has him with a weak arm and a poor route runner (but he was a 2B being converted to CF). That defensive problem would be buried if he was in LF (where defense does not seem to be a priority) and you get an offensive threat to lead-off (just without the power profile).
Padres don't have the payroll flexibility to take Jansen's $16MM and not sure BOST would even consider the bundle of those two sufficient to let up on a high prospect return.
So IF the Padres really want to pursue Duran ... do they want a CF (and live with the defensive liability) or a LF offensive threat? IF LF is Marsee the better CF option for now? Where does Merrill land ... INF when Kim departs ... converted to CF?
My guess is that BOST will demand too much for the Padres to make a deal. More likely Duran goes with Jansen to PHIL or LAD ... each have the money and want to further bolster their pens.

Preller to hold a presser today at 10 PST. I guess they're feeling the fan pressure.

About every GM holds a presser at the beginning of ST … don’t expect Preller to say anything enlightening. He can care less about fan angst and feels no fan pressure. Only fans feel fan pressure.

OK … nothing firm but some points from Preller:
1. Padres are still in trade talks and FA discussions … market has been slow but still working on moves
2. Yes, they still have some financial flexibility
3. No, they will not push any of the prospects to the ML if they are deemed not ready … they will not be “given” a slot … they will have to “earn” it.
4. Seemed comfortable with waiting as long as it takes … noting that Wacha was a very late signing last year. (Preller does have a history in late moves).

Depending on the money, should SD take a flier on signing Odorizzi?
Would he be a better option than either Lorenzen, Syndergarrd, or Ryu?

Maybe on a minor league make good deal but after missing all last year and a history of injury since 2019 … would not use a roster spot (or any significant money to sign him.
Probably put him in the pool of. Syndergaard and Lauer …

Rumors of MIA still looking at trades for their SPs, Cabrera Luzardo, and Garrett are still circling around.
Luzardo should be the most costly in terms of prospects. Luzardo might be the least expensive in both prospects and dollars, as he has not reached the arb process yet. And according to MLBTR the most available as far as MIA is concerned. Garrett would be a nice get, but still cost at least one very good MiL prospect and others.
PIT is talking with them still, would hope that Preller is in contact as well. I would hate to see a good SP option go to PIT if it is something could have met prospect wise, without hurting too much.

Who is Pitt gonna send them that they need?
Isn't Miami in need of SS and Catcher?
Pitt has Henry Davis and also Endy Rodriguez at Catcher but Rodriguez is going to miss the entire season.
Not sure what SS they have to offer but Ji-Hwan Bae is a Ha Seong Kim clone at 2B...just not sure of he has any SS experience?
