I have stated many times that there is something about Profar and this team that just works. His numbers are probably pedestrian at best as a Padre, but he brings something in that clubhouse that isnt seen in stats, but is present in the most important number, Wins and Losses.

Please bring him back.

He and the Padres are the biggest no-brainer match of the off-season, maybe for any team in the NL West. His numbers are ho-hum (especially for a corner), but given his impact from the chemistry standpoint, he's sees to give us by far the best value for our FA money. I honestly feel like last season goes at least a bit differently had we had him all year. For a season where we're going to need more bang for a buck, he just feels necessary.

1yr/1m. Great value for the team.

Im sure there has to be some bonuses in there to get the contract up there a little more. However, still a great deal for SD.

Looks as though he can earn another 1.5m in incentives.

Great news!

Cooper next? Or is there a left handed version of Cooper available?

Even though teams weren't knocking down his door to get him to sign, thought Profar would come in around 4M, so it shows how badly he wants to play for San Diego.  Incentives are likely easily reached since basic salary is just a little above league minimum.

Cooper is surely going to cost more, so expect the next move is for a low cost SP to throw into the competition for the rotation.  I still like Ryu over Syndergaard and Lorenzen but since expectations are low for whoever we sign, maybe its just the dollar amount.  If any money left after that, might take a run at Cooper if Preller doesn't make a trade.

I look at those 3 SPs this way.

Ryu is LH, no other SP option is LH except for Groome or Morejon, and they are not really an options at this time based on performance or injury history. I would prefer to look at Lauer, better chance for him to succeed IMO based on age compared to Ryu.

Syndergarrd offers the biggest potential, although his mental state is really in question at this time.

Lorenzen is the safest bet, based on performance last season, but probably wants the most money.

I think you sign Lauer and Ryu and move onto the OF. Syndergarrd is a gas can and Lorenzon is far too inconsistent.

Profar is for way less than I expected. A base of $1MM is just above league minimum and what they would have to pay for that last 26 man roster spot ... so in a weird sense they are getting a versatile experienced ML player with past ML successes for basically free vs a filler AAAA player. Even if he hits all the incentive marks ... even if easy based on AB given this roster ... $2.5MM is still a major bargain for just the on field work ... the clubhouse effect is a pure bonus.

Guessing why this took so long versus the rumor of signing a month ago is that the Padres and Boras had an agreement in place to sign Profar IF he does not get a better offer by the opening of ST.

With Profar in at $1MM ... and provides that utility option for LF/DH/1B ... Preller now can rethink spending on the remaining  FA options or players added via trade. Add to that IF Preller sees just one (or a rotation)  of Merrill, Marsee, Pauley making the 26 man at league minimum ... even more financial flexibility for the FA/trade adds.

IF the CBT (year end) is the cap ... have to make room for the $1.5MM of incentives ... so just guessing there is around $15-16MM to deploy while keeping a safety net for the trade deadline. One more OF to go with Profar and a prospect ... if by trade a low cost add? That would leave a goodly chunk for that veteran SP everyone seems to want to add as the #4 SP. Guessing Ryu is the leading candidate.

  1. Syndergaard been a disaster with his lost velocity ... I would say not unless it is a minor league deal with a ST invite and give him a series of opt out of the minor league deal at point if he is not added to the 26 man ... and still a low base with incentives.
  2. Lauer is similar to Syndergaard in approach ... although should even be cheaper if makes the 26 man ... his RIGHT shoulder injury last year seemed to alter his delivery (even though a LHP) ... but only 28 and may have a better chance to rebound that Syndergaard.
  3. Lorenzen is probably the best FA SP option after Snell and Montgomery and will hold out for a while and push for a multi-year deal and well over $10MM AAV ... seems to rich for the Padres given their current situation and the prospect expected in 2025.
  4. Ryu ... likely will settle for a 1 year deal in the $8-10MM range (but been wrong a lot so far) and that would fit ... his return from TJ last season has decent results even though his velocity dropped to the 88MPH range and at about 36 not likely to find that much more plus always has been in injury risk. So, a gamble as is about everyone left.

If they went with Ryu at $10MM with Profar at $1MM and a prospect at $750K ... should still have around $5MM for that "other" OF and that should get them a "serviceable" ML player to fill out the line-up.
