GO! … and when he comes in a game it will be “Go Time!” If he is any good … I see the marketing department “GO”ing nuts.
Kim probably convince him to go with W S Go?

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 3, 2024, 4:57 pmQuote from Jeremy Hill on January 3, 2024, 3:22 pmGo's deal came in way cheaper than I expected. Only 4.5m over 2 years.
Like it much better than what Tim Hill would have cost.

I'm for Suk Go, c'mon fellas his jersey name has to include both Suk & Go, to bad it couldn't be Go Suk (it)!

Hosmer's money comes off the books after 2025. A new TV deal could increase spending power again. We supposedly made a competitive offer to Lee. Prospects emerging at the major league level should let us narrow the focus of our spending. They should be able to keep Kim if they want to.
I also think Bogaerts gets unfairly blamed for the current financial situation. He performed to expectations. It's not his fault Cronenworth and Manny fell off. Looking at some of the underlying data I'm much more concerned about them than Bogaerts moving forward.
Its not Bogaerts himself or his performance that is the issue. You're right, its not his fault he took an ill advised contract, almost anyone would have taken that offer.
It is the issue that SD overpaid for him, and at a position that was already well covered at the time in Tatis, Kim, and Merrill was hot and coming even then. SD hampered itself for a player that simply was not needed on this team. And it is now money that can not be deployed in other areas of need.
Even if all the prospects pan out, the new TV deal comes out gold, and Kim is signed to an extension. It will still be the reason that SD could not even think about keeping Soto and had to trade him this offseason.
However in all likelihood, Kim will depart via FA, most of the prospects will not pan out, the TV contract will barely be more than it was in 2022. And it will still be money that will be needed for other positions. Especially since Machado and Bogaerts are both around the same age, and will eventually be fighting for the same DH position down the road. $56M a year in AAV for two RHH DHs is not a good look.
Kim still had something to prove from an offensive standpoint. Tatis was suspended, had been an inconsistent defensive SS and had already begun the transition to the OF. Merrill hadn't played a game above A ball.
I'm not saying the fit was perfect. I'm saying the Bogaerts signing alone wasn't the issue. The issue is that it was combined with a premature extension for Cronenworth and a big new deal for Machado. They both regressed, yet most people ignore that and only focus on Bogaerts. On some level I get it. He's the new face. He doesn't have the same level of love built up among the fan base. From a performance standpoint his money was the most well spent. If Cronenworth and Machado perform to expectations no one is talking about Bogaerts. Even Cronenworth's struggles are blamed on Bogaerts pushing him off 2B by a large portion of the fan base. It's ridiculous to me to be more upset by the guy who performed than the others who didn't. All of their money counts the same.
From a prospect standpoint you can't have it both ways. If most of the prospects won't pan out why should Merril's presence have factored into the Bogaerts decision at all?

Quote from Jeremy Hill on January 4, 2024, 7:37 amReading into the Matsui and Go signings I wonder if AJ will look at Naoyuki Uwasawa as another potential value signing. His market has been very quiet. He's at least shown an ability to eat innings in Japan. He could be an interesting play with how crazy the pitching market is.

Quote from BoosterSD on January 4, 2024, 8:18 amTake another potential CF candidate off the list, as it appears that the NYM and Bader have come to an agreement for one year at $10.5M.

Well CF will be either Marsee or Tatis.
The remaining FA (of any quality) are Bellinger (way out of the price range in the $25MM range long term) then big drop to Taylor and maybe Duvall (given the Bader signing being $2-3MM higher than projected both will be in that $10MM range ... too high) . Then down to "filler" types in Jankowski and Hicks ...should be low cost but really not starter types anymore.
Not seeing anyone on the trade horizon that is a good ML CF.
Looking more as though Marsee will be in the line-up to start the season either in LF or CF. Still will need two more hitters.

Quote from fenn68 on January 4, 2024, 9:03 amWonder why Machado is not getting more heat for a major drop in production after re-working his contract last winter before he completed his last season prior to his opt out (adding 5 more years, 10 if he did opt out)?
2022: 298/366/531 ... wRC+ 153 ... 7.5 WAR
2023: 258/319/462 ... wRC+ 114 ... 3.5 WAR
Even if Machado just fell half way between the two numbers ... Padres probably would have won those couple of extra games needed to make the playoffs.
Machado landed the largest contract yet at 4.4 WAR Kim, Tatis, and Bogaerts all out performed him in 2023. Maybe the Machado contract re-work was the worst move from last winter.

I, personally, would probably put a lot of his down year on his elbow issues that he played through much of the season and ultimately had surgery on. If he follows up last season with a stinker then we might have reason to gripe about/harp on Machado.
To be honest, I put a lot of the failures on the bullpen and the coaching. Too many games blown by the bullpen especially early on when there was no answers for Luis Garcia's struggles and no replacements for Suarez and Pomeranz. The records in one run games and extra inning games were abysmal.
Honestly, I am hoping Boegarts is past much of his wrist issues. The HBP early in the season changed the trajectory of his season. He was by far the MVP of the first month of the season and was carrying the offense up until he was hit on that wrist.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 4, 2024, 10:50 amAnd was the MVP the last 4-6 weeks as well.
Timely hitting,or lack thereof, and the porous Bullpen are definitely the main reasons we missed the playoffs.
Both more easily fixed than other issues we could have had.
Offense overall was average while the pitching and defense were excellent.
Last years team was a Playoff team if not for their issues in close games.
