OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2023, 12:28 pmWith the Sale and Montes moves … getting even more convinced Padres have to focus on the adds being hitters since any truly good SP are out of the price range and the not so good will still consume a major portion of the money available (or require some significant prospects in a trade … maybe both) leaving the OF barren beyond Tatis.
Until the prospects (Iriate, Thorpe, Mazur, Bergert, Snclling) are ready … can we survive with Vasquez, Waldron, Brito, Avila backing up Musgrove, Darvish, and King. Then again, are any of the FA locks to be better so is there a real choice?
As for the hitters, agree that we may be seeing Merrill, Marsee, and Pauley in the mix late in the season (worst case 2025) so might lean into 1 year deals on any FA this winter. Can’t wait until sure about any prospects being ready for the start of 2024. Clears the deck for 2025 and if the prospects all are not ready … there will be more FA next winter to backfill.
Now if the FA hitter market (not a lot of good options) has the FA signing with other teams (their choice) … we may just get to see Marsee, Merrill, Pauley in some combo to start 2024 … at least they are legit prospects and not minor league non-prospects.

I'm coming around to your line of thinking Fenn, spend the rest of our budget on bats, not arms. Even Yandy Rodriguez sounds like he might get $10 million per season from Toronto. We can live with the combination of Vasquez, Avila, Brito & Waldron as our 4th & 5th starters/long relievers until the likes of Thorpe, Snelling, Iriate, Mazur, Bergert & Lesko are ready.
I'm up for signing Peterson as LF/DH, Santana as 1B/DH, Bader for CF & Profar as part-time LF/Super Utility and stay under $200 million payroll total to reset the over-the-cap payroll tax. Go Pads!

Quote from Randy Manese on December 30, 2023, 2:17 pmLooks like Atlanta had the same projections I saw for Sale; good deal for them, especially with Boston picking up 17M. Probably means Boston is going to reunite with Paxton. Not that high on Grissom, could be a regular but not projected to be an impact player; glove is not that good - best position is probably 2b, which is where Boston will likely play him. If I'm a Red Sox fan, not that happy.
Concerning Montas, Cincinnati overpaid again for pitching but they really feel they have a chance to win the division so they are going for it in a very competitive NL Central.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 30, 2023, 2:46 pmRead where Padres were one of 3 teams interested in Domingo German. That would be a deviation from avoiding players who have known issues - German has an alcohol addiction and past domestic violence incidents (probably prompted by alcohol). If they are convinced he's clean and on the right treatment path, Padres could give him a second chance.
If that's the case, could a Trevor Bauer rumor be close behind? He had a good year in Japan last year, so he's likely ready to pitch in the majors in 2024. Another poster made the pitch for Bauer a few weeks back but thought Padres would not go in that direction - now, seems a possibility if they're giving guys second chances, albeit a longshot. A one year "show me" deal for the soon to be 33 year old?

With Bauer's accuser being a regular in the Padres clubhouse, I don't see Bauer coming here. Also, he will probably be more expensive than the Padres can afford.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 30, 2023, 3:12 pmWhoah - didn't know the accuser had any relationship with the Padres; maybe I'll make that even a longer longshot! So, are we down to Manaea and Syndergaard yet? Or have we decided to pivot to fill out the everyday roster with short term contracts for position players until our top hitting prospects are ready to debut?
Good luck Preller - glad I don't have to fill in this roster with a very limited budget and still keep us competitive. I get exhausted just thinking about it, so to have to deal with this reality every day has got to be stressful. The good thing is that most experts are predicting better years for all our regular hitters (including Croney) and a continued good showing by Campusano. Throw in a healthy top of the rotation and a good bit of luck and who knows - maybe we will be better than last year's record. Everyone have a "Happy New Year"!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 30, 2023, 3:31 pmBauer still has litigation pending in Arizona with another of the alleged accusers. I've also seen reports that one of the other alleged victims provided photos and videos to the league as part of their investigation. Part of Bauer's motivation for settling was reportedly caused by the judge ruling that evidence from the league's investigation would be allowed into trial if one took place. The Bauer situation is still far from settled and I doubt any major league team will touch him until it is.

I believe her father is the baseball coach at USD. She has apparently had relationships, or actually "relations", with several Padres including Tatis and Clevinger.

I guess but not really sure the upside. Alcohol abuse, domestic abuse, had a suspension for a “sticky substance” while pitching.
Then add at age 31 his career has 89 starts with an unimpressive 4.41 ERA … last season 22 starts 4.56 ERA.
Is he really any better than what they have? Why use limited payroll space for that kind of add? Did see the note that SD may be a in the mix … maybe it is just a minor league make good deal by June 1? Gives some time for the Padres to make a character judgement I guess without a lot committed. Just don’t see better upside than what they have.
