I would offer Yates an extension 2 +1 $16 +$10.. ($1 mil ) mutual option .. He turns it down no problem I put a QO on his ass in the offseason

Not sure what the offer is ... $6.5 (in arb) + 8MM + 8MM + Mutual option year at $10MM v $1MM buyout?

Since the QO is around $18MM for one year ... he probably would love to decline the offer and get the QO.

It seems that the Padres have come up against their financial constraints. I seriously doubt that Yates would take a contract any less than Pomeranz. Would you? He has been here for 2-3 years and has been a top 5 RP since he got here. Last year he was the best in baseball without a doubt. Pomeranz had 1 great month. Yates had 2 great years. FOR US. If I were him I would break AJ’s nose if he tried to offer me less than 3-$34.

National media and “image” seem to suggest Matt Boyd is a good trade target for a team needing to boost their SP ... upside IF-IF-IF. Boyd was a mediocre pitcher prior to last season .. had a hot 1st half and a poor 2nd half. Yet that hot 1st half coupled with some excellent K% keeps his image up. At the same time Lucchesi gets no love and barely is considered a #5 on a poor team. Consider the 2nd half of 2019:

Boyd (28) ... 3 years control ... 14 starts (78 innings) ... 5.51 ERA ...0.6 WAR

Lucchesi (26) ... 4 years control ... 13 starts (68 innings) ... 4.52 ERA ... 0.6 WAR

Now I don’t see that much in Boyd but if others in MLB think he is a legit trade target in a SP starved league (and DET is reluctant to deal him) .... shouldn’t Lucchesi also be a legit trade target ... probably with more value that we place on him?

Corey Dickerson signs with Miami ... $17.5MM/2 years.

Probably why the Padres were not in the mix ... more than most expected for Dickerson.

$8.75 million per year for 2 years? That is the cheapest quality player any team can get as a FA! Would you rather have Dickerson or Grisham? I would take Dickerson 10 times out of 10. I have to believe that AJ did that trade for Grisham more to get Davies and mostly to save money. Maybe also because AJ hopes Grisham can play CF?

This offseason we got a good LF(Pham) and a LF, maybe kinda CF(Grisham). Would anyone else have preferred Dickerson to Pham? He is $2-4 million cheaper per year, same power, slightly better BA, slightly worse OBP, better arm, 20 SB less yes, but at least equal defense and no worse than equal injury concerns. Oh, and he is also LH and wouldn’t have cost us Renfroe or EDWARDS!

I think AJ May have been more concerned about making waves than doing what is actually best for the team earlier this offseason.

I have been pro-Dickerson all winter and have no idea why not just the Padres but any team that needed a corner OF basically ignored him. Of course we don’t know what he was demanding earlier in the winter and the deal is him coming down given the lack of interest. My guess that the Calhoun signing (and with Ozuna still available) pushed him down from his ask.

Getting Grisham is a move for the future and a potential CF (6 year control and low cost) and the deal was more for the next 2 years of Davies as an upgrade to the SP and a potential flip at the trade deadline / next winter. Not really a trade-off for Dickerson.

Personally would have liked Pham in LF and Dickerson in RF.

Not sure either, would be interesting to find out.

Dickerson in RF........he has only played 6 games in RF, seems to me his not a good option for RF. Love the bat though,

Its a difficult choice between Pham and Dickerson for LF. I think the possible trigger point for that deal was part Cronenworth, and part AJP wanted the "redass" that Pham provides in the clubhouse.

Pro Dickerson myself but once we traded for Pham it didn’t make sense to spend $17 mil for 2 years for him with no position.

He’s not a CF or RF.

Think Dickerson is strictly LF.  But Pads seem to be looking at Pham that way too.  Pham is clearly a better player; but he did cost a lot more.... could have signed Dickerson, traded Renfroe to Rays for Cronenworth + ? AND still had Edwards as a major trade chip and been in about the same place net; actually better considering Pham's $ will rise next year...

... but I'm trusting Preller on this one.  I think Cronenworth AT LEAST replaces Profar/Garcia as the primary utility guy next year for the next 3 years, but mainly I think we're going to like Pham, and frankly our entire team needs a kick in the ass from a player who actually knows what a strike zone is & how to get on base.
