Something that's gone completely overlooked with all the Myers hysteria & hand-wringing is this:    Padres have to date paid Wil Myers.... 23 MM for 5 full seasons (and > 1/3 of this was just received in Nov 2019). So Myer's Pads career to date he is at 4.6 MM AAV.   EVEN With all the injuries, position changes, moving around in lineup, and maddening boom/bust production, don't see an argument that he hasn't delivered value SO FAR....

So let's say Pads do eat 30 MM to trade him.  That would take him to "5"/53.... about 10 MM AAV for his Pads tenure.

Contract an overpay?  Yes for sure.  But contract structure did give some benefit to Pads.

p.s. Does anyone remember the reason for the extreme back loaded contract?  Was it $$ constraints from Petco bond/debt payts?

Also remember 1st 3 yrs or so of contract he had like a $40 mil surplis value.. So even with a 3 WAR remainder over his next 2 yrs.. He will be a slight overpay but almost even

True, value has been there so far. Similar to the LAA and Pujols. Now, both teams are in the regret stage of the contracts. $20M± for this performance.

I dont recall why it was so back loaded. I always thought that was strange myself. And now it is looking atrocious.

Think it was just the first three years were scheduled to be arbitration years (and would have been lower anyway) and the $20MM years were the buyout of FA years. Padres probably did not want to pay any money sooner than they would have via arbitration (except for the bonus).

Sort of makes his $13.8MM AAV a bit misleading since could have had him under control via arbitration for the first three years for maybe a $7MM AAV and not dealt with the coming three years. But that is hindsight.

Could argue that he was fairly paid for the first three years of the deal as a 1.0 WAR player going 0.9-1.6-0.5 each year. Just never lived up to his 2016 with a 3.5 WAR which got him the 6 year deal.

Dont count on getting the Korean pitcher Kim, MLBTR is reporting he is signing with St Louis.

These Asian free agents always intrigue me.

No telling really how good they will be.

Remember when many Padre fans were very upset when we missed out on Fukudome?

He turned out to be a below average MLB player...as most do.

Good analysis FENN; extension probably roughly matched Arb steps up (mostly via signing bonus paid in 3 installments).  When Myers is hot you could argue he's > 20 MM; real difference maker.  But he's never come remotely close to sustaining it, and the magnitude with which he "loses" his swing is really baffling.  Hitting is as tough mentally as anything in all sports, but you would think vet guys would just start to 'feel' when it's not just bad luck or whatever & have a process to go through to get back to where they're "on"...  with Myers it just seems like every slump he has utterly no idea how to get out of it & flails around which sometimes compounds it.

To his credit, he did turn it around end of last year while the other vets were mailing it in.  If he hadn't done that, we could probably have saved 20,000 posts on here b/c his value would have been closer to zero = no trade.  Also, he has spent the majority of his Padres career out of position in both the field and the lineup; often wildly so.  As Pads strengthen their lineup & team, maybe the consistency of knowing he's "in RF batting 6th" most nights will help?

And mid to late 2000s Aki 😃

Padres get breakfast as they sign RP Kyle Barraclough to a MiL deal with an invite to ST.
