If this team is going to compete we need value from every spot on the roster, even backups. I don't think we can afford to keep Kinsler. Whoever replaces him is AJ's choice.

Easy fit for France although he might not be as good at cursing at fans. Think France is traded though.

"Is Garcia $1.700MM more valuable than Kinsler?"

Short answer....yes.
I think we will keep Garcia....versatile LH off the bench who gets on base and local boy.

But I guess that could change depending on who's available at league minimum.

But I  wouldn't lose any sleep if they didn't either.

We can also look at it this way if Tatis Jr /Machado and Urias are all here... There is no need for Garcia.. France can cover 1B/2/B and 3B .. And those 3 boys can all play SS... No need for Garcia or Kinsler with thise 3 + France.. Now if Urias is traded and say Whit is at 2B.. Then Garcia becomes that 3rd option at SS.. But the guy I think could help the Pads a lot (and he won't be cheap) is Guriel from Jays.. Can play OF/SS and 2B well and hits pretty darn well... Jays looking for a lot of MLB ready Pitching .. Q + Lucchesi for Guriel??

Machado, Tatis, Urias, and France are all RH hitters. Thats where Garcia extra value comes into play, he is LHH. That is huge for this team. Unless we can sign Didi.

If we sign Didi he's gonna start somewhere....so that would only happen if we trade Urias.

Which to gain Didi I would be fine with.

Not giving up on Urias....but I like Gregorius better for his power and experience if we're ready to win "now".

The signing of Didi would require 2 things to happen, trade of Urias to make room in the INF, and converting Tatis to 2B since defensively Didi is better at SS than Tatis.

Unless you could convince SD and Tatis that he is better served in RF, then keep Urias at 2B, and Didi at SS.

Machado - 3B, Gregorius - SS, Urias - 2B, Hosmer/France - 1B, Renfroe/Naylor - LF, Margot/Jank - CF, Tatis - RF, Hedges/Mejia - C.

Or put Tatis in the OF.

A bit of caution on Gregorius ...

1. His career line is 264/313/429 ... good gut not great

2. In 2018 (his last healthy, full season his line AWAY from NY was a poor 233/292/408 (240 AB) while in NYC surrounded by a top line-up his line was 299/372/572 (264 AB). If he is closer to this AWAY line which could be worse going into PETCO ... might not be getting the player they hope for.

3. There will be other teams that bid for Gregorius  and coming off a nearly $12MM salary ... will not be cheap. Even if he is signed for the same $12MM ... does that take away from the money to upgrade the OF or for a #1 SP?

I would pass on Gregorius and focus the money on OF / SP upgrades directly.

He is probably a better LH bat that is better than most OF options at this time. His benefits would be upgrade to defense and a LH bat. Plus the added defense at SS and Tatis over Naylor in RF would increase the efficiency of the team. And would reduce the need for another OFer. He would also play away games in AZ and COL 20 games a year which helps. Plus the small/hitter yards of the NL such as MIL, CIN, CHI, ATL would all be good as well.  So overall I think it would be a plus move.

Of course, it would all be predicated on a move of most of Myers salary.

If you are not excited about a Didi add, maybe this is a better use of money.

Trade Myers, Naylor, Edwards or Morejon, and one other mid level prospect to DET for 75% of Myers salary and a bag of balls.

Sign Dickerson to hold down LF, sign Calhoun to platoon with Renfroe in RF, and then sign Cole. That would be what $8M per year for Dickerson and Calhoun, and maybe you can scale Cole so that the overall value is at $32.5M per year. That would be an add of $48.5M per year, minus the $17M from Myers leaving, so a net gain of $31.5M. Or basically Dickerson and Calhoun for the saved salary of Myers and then Cole's salary, which some pundits think we could do anyway.

I am 99% sure Cole will not be a Padre.

Think about it......"every" team wants him.

They can't all afford him but most can and would for a player of his caliber.

This isn't a position player that rules out half of the league because of where he has to play and half of the rest because he wouldn't be

"enough" of an upgrade.

This is a bona fide Ace #1 that would instantly make every team better.

S.D. has a lot going for it right now but not enough for him to choose us over "at least" 15 other teams who will offer more $$ or

can offer a better chance to win.

Yes i realize we didn't expect Machado either....but even that was more of a 25% chance.

I'm not counting on the 1%.
