I’d like to see a TOR added this offseason and I think doing so would open up more trade possibilities for adding an OF bat. If the goal is to start winning in 2020 that seems like the route to go. I admit I’m more  optimistic about the growth of the Padres young hitters then most. The Padres interest in Kim seems odd to me, they must really like him. Just from the little bit I’ve read about him it indicates he’s more of a backend rotation, BP guy. If he’s signed I’d imagine one or possibly two of Joey, Cal or Davies will be moved in a package.

I’m interested to see how Puigs market develops. An OF of Puig in RF, Grisham/Margot CF, Renfroe/Cordero or Naylor LF would be good enough for me. Puig on a 2/18 or 2/20 could be a great value. He obviously comes with concerns, but AJP likes to gamble. Did Puig and Manny get along in LA?

Kim could be low cost, mid-rotation and clearly bump Lucchesi and Quantrill out of the starting slots (and they would be good trade chips for offense or in a package even a better SP). Alternatively, since LHRP is an option ...Strahm could become a real strong trade chip (low cost, 3 years control).

TOR arm would be a great add ... but need (want) more improvement in all the 5 starting slots. TOR may get you further in the playoffs but starters 2-5 are critical to get you into the playoffs ... wins are wins. Lauer, Lucchesi were being panned as #5 arms at best ... Quantrill before last season was on the verge of being written off and even now ... maybe a mid-rotation IF he develops. Based on proven ML results ... Davies will be an upgrade. IF Kim (a veteran at 31) is as billed he will be an upgrade (probably not worse).  So putting two middle of the rotation arms with who we think are upper rotation arms in Paddack and Lamet ... sets the table pretty well IF they get that TOR (note not really there with Richards until he shows it for the Padres). Plus not a high cost.

IF they don't get that TOR arm ... they advance on one objective of winning more games (need a +11 wins to .500) while waiting for Gore / Patino.

It is a 26 man roster and need contributions from them all. Kim and Davies may not be the high profile sparkling bobble player but probably should not discount their value in moving a 92 loss team into a playoff contender. Not the end of moves but upgrade moves.

FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen wrote in their Top 50 free agent rankings that Kim’s slider is a “nasty, tilt-a-whirl” offering but that the rest of his pitches are average at best, calling him more of a fifth starter or swingman.

Kim may be "the 2nd best Korean FA SP on the market"... but if this assessment is correct, don't see much of a need beyond depth.

Please NO!!! Puig is a POS, over rated, unreliable bat. His "personality" has wore thin every where he has been, and in one of the most hitter friendly parks in baseball, he hit .276/.332 with 9 HRs. IMO Puig is a downgrade in almost every way from Renfroe.

Let us not forget ... signing a FA TOR arm is not the only way to get a TOR arm.

Remember Houston traded for Verlander, Greinke, Cole .... and frankly did not give up great prospect stock. Recall the NYY did that to get Sabathia. Boston did that with Sale. Padres have some quality prospects ... so maybe for the Padres trading prospects may get them a legit TOR arm that costs less than a FA ... on a shorter contract ... buying time for Gore et al.

Kluber fits the profile and has been discussed. Sale from a rebuilding Boston?

Doesn't have to be in 2020 could be next winter as other teams reevaluate the situations.

Sabathia was a FA signing after putting MIL on his back and getting them to playoffs. Sale addition was a haul to the CWS, so that is what would make me nervous, is somebody wanting that type of haul for a TOR.

Speaking of Sale, IF he is right, he is awesome! Imagine Sale, Paddock, Gore, Patino, Lamet? Umm wow!! But is he healthy? Why did he have such an up and down year in 2019? Did the PRP injection do the trick, or is his arm one slider away from falling off? That's a big bet, both of prospects to get him, and cash. Although, the prospects may not be as bad, since BOS would LOVE to shed some payroll. Plus trading Sale would allow them the ability to keep Betts, and have a chance at resigning him in the offseason.

Kluber, I'd be in on him too. Should cost a bit more in prospects, since his salary is much more desirable. He is turning 34 in April. Is he Verlander and can stay highly productive into his late 30's? Or is the stuff starting to decline because of age?

It would have to be a price is right deal for me. Agree with the personality concerns. I was thinking of him as more of a cheaper replacement if Myers is dealt. I still think one of Myers or Renfroe gets dealt and Puigs issues may keep his cost low. His career .348 OBP, power, speed and arm would be a welcomed addition if you could land him on a 1 or 2 year deal.

I wouldn’t mind seeing AJP gamble on Sale or Kluber.

Tommy Pham is a Padre! Hunter and X going there way. Wow! More details to come in.

Tatis, Pham, Machado is a nice 1,2,3. I’ve always really liked Phams game. Renfroe and X is a steep price. I could see both having very nice careers. The FO must think a lot of Owen Miller, CJ Abrams, Esteban Quiroz. This deal proves to me the Padres are intent on opening that contention window RIGHT NOW.

Sham WOW!! Where is this money coming from? Pham over Renfroe is about $5M to the payroll. Shame to those two players are going, really liked the idea of Edwards playing 2B for us.

Looking to Opening Day, as it sits right now against COL, 5 of their 6 listed SPs are RH. So it looks like we will start the season against a RHSP. Pham is a lock for LF, Grisham at this time is CF, and Myers in RF? Machado, Tatis, Profar, and Hosmer on the INF, with my guess of Mejia behind the plate. Of course, this is barring more trades, and/or injury.

Also added into the deal is MiL Jake Cronenworth, who is a LHH SS, 2B, and RP. Have to wonder if this is the end of the tenure of Garcia, or is Cronenworth going to be stored away in AAA to start the year? He does have just over 400 ABs in AAA, with a .328 BA/.419 OBP/.509 SLG and 10 HRs.

Okay. I am happy and ready for the season to start now! It looks like Myers will probably be staying now. I am fine with that at this point. Kills me to see Edwards leaving. Hope he doesn’t turn out to be the next version of Trea Turner! Gotta love Pham though. Maybe he can lead off? Even if he doesn’t, he will make for some excellent protection for Tatis.
