We probably never should have. Ownership said they were not going to spend big. Look to trades. I expect 1 big one and nothing else this offseason.
Siedler on the radio right now-- we still quite comfortable ($$$) where we are and if the right opportunity presents itself can comfortably see us going after it

Even a “big trade” will most likely add payroll.
Unless AJ works a miracle Myers++ for Haniger type of deal.

Quote from JasonE135 on December 4, 2019, 2:20 pmThat is what I am saying. He is probably saving $10-$15 million to pay for whoever our major trade pickup is. Not enough for a big time free agent, but enough for an excellent player who hasn’t hit free agency yet. Someone with 2-4 years of control I would guess.
I seriously doubt that “right opportunity “ refers to anyone who costs $25-$35 million dollars. There are guys like that available every year. If you win the bidding war and are willing to pay $200-$300 million, you can get one of those anytime. Opportunity means the ability to pick up somebody who is being underpaid for their worth but still may be somewhat expensive.

Quote from JasonE135 on December 4, 2019, 2:35 pmLike I said, we will get what we will get. AJ may also make a proposal for Hanigar. He will have irons in all kinds of fires. Whatever trade comes at the right price is the one he will take.
You want Hanigar Mr. Padre. That is obvious. I believe you may also want Merrifield, am I right? I personally do not really want either of those guys. I mean, I would love Merrifield but I think he will be the most expensive trade pickup on the market. Whatever. I don’t think AJ has his eyes set on anyone specific. Teams want to ask for the world for Hanigar, Merrifield or Marte? Fine. AJ will have 6 other guys he is working trades for.
Don’t get set on any 1 guy. I personally would like Conforto. I think he will be cheaper than the others and I think we match up well with the Mets. Will we get him? Probably not. We will get somebody. Who? Nobody knows.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 4, 2019, 2:51 pmI’d be just as happy if they signed Corey Dickerson.
But I do think we need another outfielder who can hit RH pitching....whether that’s Dickerson via free agency or Haniger via trade.
The Myers situation is the key to it all.
Can we move him?
If so how much will it cost in prospects and $?
If we end up keeping Myers I don’t think he will be our 5th outfielder.
He’s gonna play in hopes he produces or builds trade value.
So if we don’t find a way to move him we need to plan on him being out leftfielder.....which means no Dickerson and probably no Haniger.....or anyone else.
Yes I would love to have Merrifield.....but I don’t see that happening now.
I do think we are still in on Strasburg.
I think he is meeting with the Yanks Etc. To see if he wants to be a Yank or go to another big city for big money or “settle” for S.D. and big money.
Im pretty sure that’s what Seidler meant when he said we still had $$ for the “right situation”.

Compare Myers to : Castellanos & esp. Ozuna. Not as good, but more athletic & versatile than either. Ozuna projected for 3/45 WITH a Qualifying Offer on him. If you're a GM would you rather have Ozuna minus your draft pick OR 3 yrs Myers + 4 yrs Lucchesi (ONLY AFTER Pads have signed/traded for a TOR i.e. #1-#3 SP) + keep your draft $/pick for the exact same 3/45?
I believe the Lauer/Davies Brewers trade kind of proved the value of established young cheap MLB SP even #4-5 ceiling.
So far known interest in Castellanos: Cubs, SF, Dbacks
Ozuna: "at least half dozen teams Incl: Cardinals, Reds, White Sox, Rangers, Braves"
It's not the red-hot FA SP market, but only 2 of those teams are going to get their FA. I can't imagine Pads wouldn't be able to find someone to take 45 of 60MM owed to Myers if Joey included for PTBNL (nothing) in return? I'm OK with eating 15 MM (5/yr) of Myers contract & losing Lucchesi for basically nothing in return but the salary relief... IF we immediately use the $ to upgrade SP & or OF

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 4, 2019, 3:42 pmInteresting note: Wheeler went to his wife's hometown city... for less $ then moving to big city Chicago (White Sox)
Isn't Strasburg's wife also from SD? Remember, Happy wife... 😉
But seriously, when you're a > 100 millionaire like Cole or Stras, the other quality of life aspects like where you & your family are living have a lot of importance.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 5, 2019, 3:26 amIt also helps that he just won a World Series.
So even though I’m sure he wants to win it’s not like he is desperate for a WS title before he retires.

Quote from fenn68 on December 5, 2019, 6:52 amWishful thinking on home field advantage.
Hasn’t Strasburg been living in SD while pitching for WASH? Hasn’t he just moved to Newport?
Every indication is that Strasburg loves playing for WASH’s organization who can (and should) throw some big bucks at him.
Would add that in some camps ... NOT playing in your home town is preferred ... keeps all the “hanger ons” from growing up, relatives, etc from cutting into your focus on your job. Separation can be a good thing.

Quote from fenn68 on December 5, 2019, 7:01 amMost seem to think MadBum is the next to sign with at least a 4 year deal pushing $100MM. Still a lot of teams seeking pitching will move to Ryu and Keuchel ... ones not in on Cole or Strasburg will move quickly probably to avoid the big money teams in on Cole and Strasburg that don’t get them shifting focus.
Clearly not at the same level ... but needing pitching is needing pitching .... might we see the trade value of Lucchesi and Quantrill being higher that we may think? Both can step in right now as a bottom of the rotation arm and for a contender an upgrade at the bottom of the rotation gets you more wins ... more wins may be just enough to get the playoffs.
