Surely AJ thinks this kid can do better than his .301 OBP from last year.
I don't see the A's much so not sure why he had a good 18' and a bad 19'?
From my understanding listening to the talking heads on XM today, it was more just a poor start to 2019 than the whole year.
I would imagine, that if SD is on the hook for the projected arb salary, two things happened. One, Preller got a feeling that he was not the only one in on Profar and was also uncomfortable in a Villar outcome. Two, Im sure that AJP is thinking with Tingler from TEX at the helm, Profar is going to feel a lot more comfortable and we will see more of his career numbers than the start of the 2019 season. Plus, with Hosmer who is fluent in spanish, and the left side of the INF also being Latin, Profar may really feel at home in the dirt in SD.
So we have an all latin IF--- Machado 3B/Tatis Jr SS/Profar 2B/Hosmer 1B (before you say something dude is CUBAN) and Mejia at C... "Viva el Caribe"
and an all White OF Myers/Grisham/Renfroe... I like the diversity... lol

They need to add Payroll to hit that MINIMUM $$$ Salary base and not face penalties--

I mean.....adding Grisham/Davies/Profar may have made us better.....but not by enough.
Right?
Are these the Pawn moves on the Preller chess board that is the 2019 offseason?
The moves made so far are improvements and the BIG move or moves are still coming. If AJP pays the steep price in prospects to move Myers I think the Padres will be players in the G.Cole sweepstakes. Betts, Stanton and Sale are the other 3 stars I’m feeling AJP could pursue and land. My gut tells me we land one of those 4 guys.

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2019, 6:18 pmJust as a level set to were we are today in the quest to improve a very bad offense using 2019 wRC+ by position v the current contenders’ 2019 wRC+:
C (65) .......... Mejia (96), Torrens (66), Hedges (47)
1B (92) ......... Hosmer (91)
2B (84) ........ Garcia (97), Profar (89), France (83), Kinsler (70)
SS (121) ....... Tatis (150)
3B (102) ...... Machado (108)
LF (92) ........ Myers (92), Naylor (89)
CF (89) ........ Grisham (92), Margot (82)
RF (101) ...... Renfroe (98)
As always past results may not reflect future performance but as a template there should be significant improvement at C and SS with Mejia and Tatis getting more paying time. No major drop offs but also minimal improvement at the other slots ... basically the overall still needs upgrade.
None of the OF graded out as a 100 (average).

If we get one of those 4 I’ll give you credit and be completely shocked!
Even more than I was last off-season with Machado.

Quote from TatisJr on December 2, 2019, 6:59 pmMiguel Diaz non tendered is a surprise to me. I thought he’d be worth something. His stuff was filthy when I saw him. I remember hearing Hosmer talking up Diaz in ST. 39 on roster after Garcia and Profar contracts.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 2, 2019, 10:07 pm"Non-tendering" usually applies to arbitration eligible players and I don't think he was in that category - maybe DFA'd? Nonetheless, it gives the Padres an option for themselves or for the other two teams they owe a player or money to in our two trades thus far by allowing them a choice in the Rule 5 draft. Or, a big trade is coming and they need space on the roster (unlikely!) Also, it is entirely possible that we re-sign Diaz and/or Avila. Diaz has some talent but injuries have kept him off the field since his one year tenure with the Pads as a Rule 5 draftee so they are gambling he goes through.

Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2019, 5:19 amThe must have been some advantage in non-tendering Dias and Avila now vs. DFA when (if) they need a 40 man roster slot ... beyond what may be a small savings of money.
I guess this makes them FA ... but the Padres can resign them to a minor league deal which may be likely since both seem to have talent and both are dealing with injuries that may be best served with continuity with the medical staff of the Padres.

So, now two open roster slots ... FA signings? Trades of a non-roster player for a roster player? Rule 5 selection would be a real surprise but with the 26 man?
