Quote from MrPadre19 on December 3, 2019, 6:59 amSo AJ finally got his guy but at $5.7 did he get the right guy?
There was a glut of 2b available.
It's gonna really bite if guys like Sogard go out and outperform him at half the cost.
Esp. if AJ had tunnel vision and only had his sights set on Profar because of their past history.
He can't afford to make decisions for personal reasons right now....so let's just hope Profar hits and doesn't still have the "yips" in the field.

Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2019, 7:40 amQuote from fenn68 on December 3, 2019, 5:19 amThe must have been some advantage in non-tendering Dias and Avila now vs. DFA when (if) they need a 40 man roster slot ... beyond what may be a small savings of money.
I guess this makes them FA ... but the Padres can resign them to a minor league deal which may be likely since both seem to have talent and both are dealing with injuries that may be best served with continuity with the medical staff of the Padres.

So, now two open roster slots ... FA signings? Trades of a non-roster player for a roster player? Rule 5 selection would be a real surprise but with the 26 man?
My mistake ... roster at 39 ... Avila was already DFA but I guess not yet cleared waivers?

I don't get it either ... high cost for a 1 year gamble in 2020 with his probable ceiling not all that much greater than what appears to be lower cost options.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 3, 2019, 7:57 amOther than maybe 10 homeruns I'm thinking playing Garcia everyday would have given us just about the same production we can expect from Profar.
So unless they plan on using Profar all around the diamond it just doesn't sound like a great moving considering the cost etc.?
Or AJ feels very confident this kid(Profar) is finally gonna break out after several mediocre seasons?

Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2019, 8:21 amI see comments about his productive 2018 ... skeptical.
In 2018 he was playing in a hitter's park in Texas, and all his "improvement" was at Home. In 2019 in Oakland, a pitcher's park, his Home stats dropped down to the level of his Away stats for both Texas and Oakland.
PETCO is a pitcher's park. I don't expect a rebound to his 2018 performance ... more aligned with this 2019 performance ... and that is not worth $5.7MM.
Garcia ($1.5MM) - France ($0.6MM) - Kinsler ($3.75MM) may not be exciting but I think could have been just as productive while saving $5.7MM for better utilization.

Dude has his man crush for all things TEX and is betting his tenure in SD on that love affair. Fortunately for SD, either way it works out, SD should be able to bounce back from the Kinsler, Profar, Tingler love affair as both players are only under contract for 2020, and Tingler if not spectacular, should be easily replaced if/when Preller is shown the door.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 3, 2019, 8:53 amSurprised that Profar got 5.7 mil - about 1.5 more than I thought he'd be offered. I hope this signals a money dump (trade of high-priced undesirables) during the upcoming meetings because we still need to sign/extend Yates. In that regard, I hope to see movement of Myers and Kinsler (maybe he'll retire because of his injury?) and other possible trades of Margot, Hedges, Renfroe, etc. if that facilitates bringing in either a more complete OF or a TOR starter. Wouldn't it be great to get Mookie to agree to a long-term extension as part of a multi-player swap with Boston? I wonder if they take Anderson Espinoza back as part of the deal - just kidding!

Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2019, 9:22 amGot to wonder if Preller is just winging it on the moves that seem individually good or he has a strong indication of what he can get done in the near future to open some payroll space for one or more higher quality adds (they do cost money).
Clearly moving salary from Myers / Kinsler is needed but we have seen that for quite some time ... and it has not happened. Maybe not "reluctant" buyers ... but simply no buyers? There is a breaking point of giving up too much just to shed their salaries.
With open speculation on where the payroll can go to in 2020 and what it would cost in pay to add an impact OF / SP (or if that is even probable) ... hard to gauge the venerability of some of the current roster to being traded.
Past Myers / Kinsler ... got to look at Renfroe, Hedges, Margot, Garcia, Strahm, Perdomo ... none that expensive and together maybe only $10MM? Not a game changer. Padres insist Yates is not being marketed .. and even he is only about $6.5MM. I can see the added $5MM for Davies (legit upgrade) but question the $5.7MM for Profar.
I guess this may put more pressure to "overpay" with added prospects to move Myers / Kinsler.
Will be interesting to see how the Padres work this out.
