Supply may exceed demand ... which would be good for the Padres.

Always teased by the unknown (although the Padres do have a strong scouting presence in Japan) and if he is good would like adding a younger LHH option that they could potentially control for 6 years. He is a Japanese star .... so not going to be really low cost unless he really wants to be in MLB vs. being a star in Japan.

Good to have options as FA as opposed to trying to trade fill that need.

There was competition from many a team for the much better JDM and he sign for a bargain.. Nick gets 4 or 5 yr deal around $80 mil

I doubt that our Padres will get the young guy from Japan. Since he is being posted, they will have to win a bidding war for him. It's very rare that we win those. Besides, there is a free agent CF from Japan who wants to come to the U.S. I don't know his name but there is an article on him on another thread. He has speed and excellent defense, as well as good power and a lifetime .301 BA. I think that is the aisle we should be shopping in.

They could "easily" entice Cole to replace Ryu and at the same time keep him from any other NL West roster.

They will have increases in Arb for a few guys including  Bellinger but there are other drop offs.

Bottom line it looks like they will have plenty to spend once again this offseason.
