Off Season Thread

I agree Mr. Red. I have to say, I am tired of the AL stealing great hitters from NL teams because we have hitters who cannot play the field. We have Naylor and I want to keep him. Let's not trade him unless we get some REAL quality in return.

I’m in full agreement on keeping Naylor.  We need offense and LHH. Naylor really impressed me with his strength, patience and ability to go oppo. He’s  beyond his years as a hitter and needs to learn to play the OF. I think the defense will improve. He has speed and an above average arm. I believe I saw he threw 91 or 92 mph from the OF which was second best arm in OF behind Renfroe. He needs to learn how to take good routes and hit cut off men. If he just learns those two things alone his defense will be dramatically improved.

There is something not good about Naylors swing. He is not going to progress as most of you believe IMO. And I dont think he will ever hit enough to make up for his terrible defense in the OF. I think our only hope for a LHH OF of any consequence is Cordero, and with his health issues, I am not holding my breath. AJP needs to find that LHH OF from outside the organization.

I think Trammell will be a STAR ...

I think Pads likely sign Corey Dickerson .300 hitting lefty in FA ($10-$12 mil) 2 or 3 yrs + Option.... and somehow make Dickerson/Renfroe/Margot/Naylor/Franchy work (with Trammell pushing by June) for 2020... (Myers for Price type trade to bolster SP)....

Not sure thats enough or with Myers gone we have enough OFers ....(Mejia/Margot/Renfroe vs lefties.... Dickerson/Franchy/Naylor vs Righties) to make platoon work..and can Franchy play 75% of the time upright..(maybe an Inciarte or Eaton here makes sense)..

With Dickerson on the team we would have more than enough outfielders. We would still need a CF but we could just wait for Trammell or sign Inciarte if needed, like you said. What I don't like is your David Price idea. Boston very much needs pitching. They would have no reason to trade Price for Myers unless we were willing to pay the extra $12 million per year he would cost. The last thing we need is extra financial restraints. Especially for a guy who wasn't healthy last year and has shown he is on the downslope.

His downslope in the AL East probably translates into 3.25 ERA at Petco and in the NL West.. So if we get 3.25...3.50 and 3.75 of his downslope for 20..21 ans 22.. Sign me up vs Myers... Boston would probably want a P or 2 back and this is where they can eat the $12 mil and + Benintendi to the mix... Who is arb 1 I believe.. Boston trying to save pennies.. So Myers vs Price -$12 mil... Say Naylor + Lucchesi vs Benintendi -$4 mil.... Total savings $16 mil in payroll... Bottomline is there isnt a SP as good as Price over the next 3 yrs in FA at $12 mil per (difference between Myers and Price $$) so why not... After we sign Dickerson and get Benintendi... An OF of Dickerson/Jank/Benintendi vs righties ..and Renfroe/Margot/(Dickerson/Benintendi) vs lefties works great in 2020.. Trammell pushes Jank/Margot to become the everyday CF by June.. Depth/platoon excellence and youth influx the perfect storm .. Renfroe and Margot would still play vs Righties here and there ..ditto to lefty on lefties... 4 owf the 5 OFers get 450+ PA's ..Jank like 250-300.... Should get 10+ WAR from that group if not more vs 4.4 in 2019..

Just a set point on Boston ... yes, they are planning to drop below the luxury’s tax threshold for 2020 to re-set the penalty level.

However, they will get there just by not resigning any of their departing FA and not signing any big money FA ... that is even with giving Betts his arbitration. IF they wanted to have some more wiggle room the likely release Bradley .... in his last ARB before FA and making  about $9MM now (underperforming). Also, that assumes Martinez does not opt out.

Simply they don’t have to move anyone for financial reasons ... just don’t add anyone expensive.

I would add that they are not that far from returning to the playoffs with their talent ... maybe catch the NYY but good roster to run down TB or OAK. Price / Benintendi are of more value to them than the Padres package. They will use any “wiggle room” to add some veteran fillers on lower end contracts.

A lot changes if Martinez does opt out ... a lot more money to deploy and a need for a middle of the order bat. Since Mookie Betts is a FA after next season ... and he said hie want to pursue FA ... 2020 could be a last hurrah for a while. On the other hand, Boston may want a lot of open payroll going forward in order to pursue re-signing Betts.

What's Bradley like? He is a left handed hitting CF, with good defense and speed, yes? Is he an older version of Margot?

Sort of the mirror image ... overall not a good hitter but in his case can't hit LHP. 29 and a FA after next season but carrying a big contract resulting from a very good 2016 offensively ... never repeated in the following three years. Very good chance he gets non-tendered to avoid about a $9-1oMM 2020 salary. Doubt anyone would trade for him with that contract considering his offensive shortcomings and doubt Boston wants a bad contract in return. Not really sure he would be an upgrade over Jankowski and certainly not for the cost differential.

Should see Benintendi in CF for Boston next season (guess).

Another low key OF add can be Kole Calhoun of the Angels.. 2019 split vs RHP .816.. Career .786 OPS not bad with POP.. Also doesnt completely suck vs LHP although with Renfroe and Margot gaudy numbers vs lefties he would definitely sit... Dickerson #1 Calhoun #2 (fallback)...
