You have to give up something to get rid of high-cost contracts. Are we going to be able to get rid of Wil Myers without including prospects? No. Is Boston going to be able to drop enough money off the books to not only get under the luxury tax, but also afford Betts next year and/or a free agent or two this year without giving up something of value? They may like to believe they can. They may like to believe that not only are teams willing to take on $30 million for Price, but also give them prospects in return. It's not going to happen. Nobody wants their overpaid players any more than they want our overpaid players. If they want to get rid of money, they have to give up some cheap talent to make it happen. They don't have any quality prospects. Benintendi is one of the only quality low-cost players they do have. It is their choice.

Who mentioned trading Betts, the idea of BOS trading away Benintendi, JBJ, and JDM is so they can keep Betts and try and sign him next offseason, and get under the CBT.
Not saying Betts is being traded, although that has been floated. Saying with Betts and JBJ being FA after this year (and in your scenario JDM is gone too) why would BOS deal AB?
Also, remember, you and I value players based upon different criteria. Nothing personal of course.

I don't see Boston being able to compete with most of their payroll going to Price, Sale, Martinez, Bogaerts, Pedroia and Eovaldi. They cannot get good pitching(playoff winning type) until they get rid of Price, Sale and Eovaldi. They are up against the luxury tax threshold. They need to get rid of overpaid pitching. To get rid of any of those three guys they will need to include someone the quality of Benintendi. At least.

Im sure we all do, and civil conversations is why we are on here, we dont have to agree, whats the fun in that? We want to talk Padre baseball during the winter, and we all want the same end result, a WS championship in SD.
With that said, JDM is not a true FA until after the 2022 season. He has opt outs after 2020 and 2021. It is entirely possible that he does not opt out since his agent Boras is a smart guy, and realizes there are not many teams out there that can pop for a $20M a year DH. At least until the NL instills the DH.
So as J135 mentioned, BOS may have to include better/cheaper players/prospects in order to get some decent prospects back and alleviate salary at the same time.

Any thoughts of SD grabbing recently DFAd Matt Duffy as the RH bench player? A little more seasoned than France, and plays more positions than France. Also allows France to be part of a trade package. He should make about $3M next season, and would still be under control for 2021 as well.

Maybe on a minor league contract and invite to ST .... but would worry about anyone that TB just releases ... plus if only a bench player upside not worth DFA of a current roster player.

Well TAM is extremely cheap, and they gave up on Dickerson as well, so maybe not as big of a red flag as you might be thinking. He actually handles RHP pitching fairly well, at a tune of .290/.338. Wonder if he has any ability to play LF?

I think this year is going to be the exact opposite of last year's FA market: it's going to move VERY quickly, which in turn will get the trade market rolling... Of course both teams & players would rather decisions made early than late in FA, but the dynamic in this market is just completely different than last year with: FA SP strong: "everyone" needs pitching, many teams in on even the most expensive guys; Nats likely to sign one or both of Rendon & Stras, etc. Not the '30 teams waiting to see what happens with the 2 mega FA with limited # of teams involved' before doing anything market of last year....
Good chance Pads roster looks completely different by the time the Rule 5 draft rolls around.

Not a fan of Grandal so this makes me happy.
I managed to go the entire 2019 season without watching a White Sox game....now I have a reason to keep that streak going.
Plus he always destroys our pitching....glad he's out of the league.

We play White Sox this year so you may see him after all.
