So now the word is that we are trying to extend Tatis Jr.

Which of course would be awesome.

But how does that fit in with "this offseason"?

Trying to add offense.....a front line starter AND extend Tatis all while staying under $140 m?

I think the intention is to stay at or under $140....but if AJ has a chance to add a Rendon/Strasburg/Cole type player,or another

"star" via trade.....he has the option of going to Fowler and getting on his knees to beg for more.

So we either improve slightly and stay on budget or improve greatly and blow that thing out of the water...one or the other.

It would be an offseason for the ages IMO if AJ can improve this team greatly AND stay under the $140.

By greatly I mean improve the rotation AND the offense enough to make the difference for this team.

I think if we target low cost young or otherwise talented MLBers by using prospect capital.. We can go hunting in the Mazara/Meadows/Benintendi/Whit/Baez/Contreras/Mancini/ type reserve and hit on 2 or 3 targets (combine making $10 or less mil in 2020) we could realistically splurge a bit/alot (if we move Myers) on SP in FAs while managing the Salary qyite well

Are you talking Javier Baez from the Cubs? If so, you really need to do some research prior to posting. First off, IF we could get him, he is projected to make $9.3M in arbitration next season, so there goes your idea of 2 or 3 targets making a combined $10M or less. Second, here is the call to Epstein to trade for Baez. Hey, its AJP what do you want for Baez? Epstein has two answers. #1, Click - he hangs up. Or #2, Theo says cool, send me Gore, Patino, Mejia, and Tatis and then AJP hangs up.

There is NO WAY Baez is getting traded from CHC!!!!

I like your enthusiasm; however, may I suggest a couple of sites that could help with some of the monies that go along with players.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/

https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/nl-west/san-diego-padres/

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/contracts/

Your view and my view of Baez is wayyyy different... He would be one of my lowest if not my lowest priority of that list... sure his OBP (career) is .316... Urias (as much as he has struggled ) is at .318.. Baez aint going to improve that.. Urias will.. Obviously BA and SlG he is in another stratosphere, but what happens at Petco? in SD for 162 game season.. BA goes south to .260 (as we have seen) and now OBP is in the .290's (Renfroe like) and SLG suffers too with that Marine layer (vs Wind Blown crap in Wrigley)... So unless someone has .340-.350 OBP in Chicago, I dont go all in at them.. Bryant yes, Contreras yes... Baez NO WAY at a high cost, we can get Odor to give us the same numbers offensively Baez would in SD, with Odor maybe even surpassing him in the power game.. and ODOR can be had for a bag of bazooka gum at the moment...

I always go -20 in BA, SLG and OBP when projecting what someone will do as a SDP Padre vs another team +.40 OPS if you will for another team... -.40 OPS in SDP... so a .900 OPS bat should = .860 in SD in a regular season.. and I think I am low in those calculations... so a .740 -.750 Baez aint worth what Cubs would want for him to US.. a Bryant .830-.850 OPS in SD well boys and girls that is worth it's weight in gold..

A player like Whit or McNeil would drop less if at all because their offensive profile is built around speed, and hitting ability, not Power..

You were the one that brought up Baez, not me.

Baez! Baez! Baez! Baez! Baez! Baez! Just kidding. I don't like him. I have never been very impressed with him as a player. I don't like Bryant all that much either. He has a long swing. He does a very good job of minimizing the holes but they are still there. I wouldn't want to trade for any power hitter from the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox or Rockies. Their stats are inflated by their ballparks yet they never accept a corresponding discount in trades or free agency. Anyone with questions attached to their swings should be verboten in Petco.

Wonder if Tatis Jr gets extended if a Lindor trade xould follow.. Tatis at 2B (he wouldn't care with a $100 mil in the horizon) and Lindor at SS.. This also saves Tatis body and keeps him upright..+ Contreras and a Dickerson and all of the sudden that offense looks terrific.. Pads could make Tatis like $1 mil $1 mil $20 $20 $10 $15..... Type of 9/120 overall type deal..

I think Tatis is too big for 2B and it would be a waste of his arm. If he ever moves off of SS I see him in RF. As long as we still have Gore and Trammell I would be fine with picking up Lindor. I don't see it happening but I would love it.

I also think Tatis will be looking for more like 8 years and $130-$150 million with an option year or two. It would still probably be more than worth it.

Or don't spend the big prospect capital on a position of strength in the system and sign Gregorious.  Play Tatis in CF for 3-4 years until he is relatively slower and bigger before moving him to RF. Gregorious for 3/30? Adequate defense and pop (I hear you JE215, but think for the money and veteran factor the drop off of a few bombs is reflected in the contract).

Arias, Edwards, Abrams still fit timeline for a replacement where Didi slides to 2b or UT or dealt. Frankly, with the tying run on 3b in the ninth with two outs, who do you want the ball hit to, Tatis or Gregorious?

I have mentioned in the past a liking to the idea of Didi for SS. LH bat with above average defense. MLBTR suggests a 3/42 pact for Didi, and likes the Reds to sign him. Even at $15M per year, he could be a nice bat to add to the line up. If Tatis would/could play CF, then we just added a huge upgrade to the OF, and created an extra trade chip in Margot.

I can’t imagine Tatis in CF.

With his “Mentos in Pepsi” playing style I cant imagine he would ever play a full season.

No thank you.

I would think that playing in the grass would be much easier on his body than playing SS.

Am I the only one that’s going to be upset if we end up acquiring a #3 starter?

If Stras and Cole are out....fine.

But either find another bona fide Ace or a “true” #2 Starter or spend the money/prospects on the offense.

We have #3 starters in spades....and more coming.

We need offense and/or a starter who is obviously better than Lucchesi.

Of Richards has a good season we could extend him after 2020.

So without any moves(barring injury),for 2021 we could have Paddack/Lamet/Richards/Gore/Patino/Lucchesi and this isn’t even considering advances by Morejon/Baez/Lawson/Bolanos/Thompson and the next year you can add Cantillo and Weathers.

I also left out Lauer and Margevicius.

Of course they won’t all advance....and some will go to the Pen.

But why would we need a Matthew Boyd or a Jon Gray or a Robbie Ray even?
