AverageJoe: If the Sox do indeed move Betts, could something like Betts + Price for Myers + Urias make sense for the Padres and Sox? Price and Myers line up well in terms of remaining years and while Price provides more value/$ than Meyers that trade off helps make up for Urias having grater excess value than Betts.

Craig Edwards: As for that trade, it might make some sense, but would be a ton of payroll for the Padres without getting the starter they really need.

Sign Cole - Ace to anchor/co-anchor the rotation for the next 7 years (30 mil Net +1 40 Man)

Sign Sogard (1 Mil Net +1 40 Man)

Trade Urias, Renfroe for Caleb Smith (-3.4 mil Net -1 40 Man)

Trade Lucchesi, Morejon, Potts, Marcano for Snell (+6 mil Net -1 40 Man)

Sign both Adam Jones and Akiyama (6Mil Net +1)

Trade Margot for Low A prospect (-2.1 mil Net+2)

Trade/DFA Margevicious possible PTBNL (Net-1)

Other moves to open up 40 man space:

So what does this do to payroll (I am sure I am way off basis but I think we would see a net increase of  39.1 mil unless we get creative with our TOR starter and we would have a breakeven on 40 man spots I believe. Also this would give us our 26 man roster. Seems like a pipe dream with that Payroll but who knows what these guys do to make moves and bring a winning team back to San Diego

I can’t see the Rays trading Snell....but if they did they would need a lot higher rated prospects than Morejon/Potts/Marciano to offset Lucchesi.

Plus if you’re gonna trade Urias and Renfroe for Smith he’s gonna be your #3......not a #5/bullpen piece.

Smith's numbers are very similar to Lauer's except he has a better WAR (not by much), better WHIP and better strikeout numbers although Lauer has better ERA. Lauer is 4 years younger though so may not be a good deal...for some reason i like Smith a lot more than i probably should. So maybe I am off there...also most likely way off on what it would cost for Snell, just thinking the Padres can capitalize on his down year. I do believe we will have to give up something to be able to get something so I guess you would give a top prospect in addition to what I suggested for Snell.

Yea I probably am selling Renfroe and Urias very light on that deal...I would probably add that to the Snell deal instead. Plus keeping Margot rather than signing Jones and Akiyama would save us 4 mil and make defense much better. I just think the Padres need to figure something out on offense when they have both Margot and Hedges in together. I think Hedges is a major tool/factor in bringing in a Cole/Stras which is the main reason why I left him on the roster. Also, if we can improve the offense drastically, then keeping him in the lineup isn't as big of a liability. Two dark horse contenders for pushing Urias are Quiroz and Owen Miller (possible trade piece). I think that Urias could still be a major factor in the lineup (my inclusion to deal him is more based off the fact that the FO have voiced their displeasure in 2B productivity.

I also love Hedges defense. As far as the lineup having both of Hedges and Margot in it at the same time, if we did sign Akiyama as you suggested then Margot would mostly play against left-handed pitchers, who he has good numbers against. Hedges I would imagine will play far more often against left-handers next year too. If they are platoon-type players I have no qualms about their bats. So yes, I like those parts of your idea. Dickerson as well.
