Dickerson (LF) - Akiyama (CF) - Marte (RF) = +$23MM on 2020.

Trade Renfroe and Margot and save $5.5MM ... net plus $17.5MM

Trade Myers and 1/2 of his cash owed ... save $10MM ... net goes to plus $7.5MM.

With Marte capable of shifting to CF IF Akiyama struggles with ML pitching ... back up with two of Naylor, Cordero, or Martini for a corner and wait for Trammell to be ready.

Wow!  I like how this idea evolved with multiple inputs on the thread...  interesting 2 yr window of older, hopefully more patient, established guys.... evolving into: ?, Trammell, ? in 2022.  I'm increasingly thinking the Pads are going to protect at least 1 RH OF since moves like this now or in future will suddenly make them light there.  My feeling is Ona simply due to the large amount of $ invested + promising start last year... just don't want to risk losing the 14 MM investment for nothing.

What do you guys think it would take to get Marte? seems like HIGH demand for him.

Still like the idea of adding SP, and think they could, but "using" Myers this way (even adding others to get more salary covered) probably precludes signing Strasburg.  Bumgarner?  Wheeler?  Hard to add 18-20 MM not only 1st year, but 2nd year also with added salaries of "new" OF.

This idea makes a lot of sense though.  If I had to pick between +Strasburg & Dickerson - Myers, Lucchessi, prospect vs this concept, I would still favor Stras.

HUGE problem is going to be waiting out Stras & not making other moves.  Teams like Pads may have no choice but to pull trigger elsewhere...  all the SPs are going to be waiting a long time this offseason....

My vote would go to just getting Dickerson and Maybe Akiyama. Get them while they are available because they won't be available later. Strasburg we cannot be counted on to walk away with and he will cost a TON. Our rotation was already average this year, next year it should be above average. Management has already brought in an Ace and his name is Richards. His performance from recent years is better than MadBum, Hamels, etc. Yes he is coming back from TJ surgery but that is an everyday thing now. If we spend all of our money on a Strasburg we have nothing left to improve our offense which was a lot worse than our pitching. We have players set or prospects close to ready to take care of our starting rotation, bullpen, infield and catcher. The only place we need help for now and the future is outfield.

I expect Richards, Paddack, Lamet, Quantrill, Munoz and Baez to all improve and be able to provide more innings this year because of the extra time and experience. That can put our pitching into the upper level, and it doesn't even take into consideration what Gore, Patino and Morejon could add. Seriously, who wouldn't trade the left side of their infield for Tatis and Machado? Mejia was the top catching prospect and Urias the top 2B prospect in all of baseball last year. They should all give us plus offense overall and all (including Hosmer but excluding Mejia) give us decent to plus OBP. Where is our weakness? I only see one, outfield.

Renfroe still has huge power, arm and plus defense. If he can put up a full next year like his first half this year he is a plus with OBP and strikeout problems but still useful. Especially in a platoon. CF and LF need players who can play defense and give us high OBP and plus offense against RH pitchers. Trammell is exactly that but might be a year or two away. So we could use a bridge to him like Akiyama. LF is a need that can be filled very well by Dickerson. That is a total of two adds this off-season. I see us as a whole lot closer than most people do.

I also think that Pittsburgh will ask for too much in return for Marte to make it worth our while to trade for him. I think we should use our secondary prospects first to help us get rid of Myers. If we have enough left over to still get Marte then great! Let's do it!

Great analysis.  Agree we are closer than people think; need a few significant pieces, but a lot of the improvement is already "in place".   Akiyama just feels like he could help at a modest cost.  Pads could squeeze him in with Dickerson & my Strasburg idea, but then would be right around 145 MM 2020 payroll without any further trades/releases of guys making > minimum.

I would love for us to bring Strasburg home. That would be a great move to put us all the way over the top. I just see so many teams who are going to be after him. He is going to go to the highest bidder. I put our chances at maybe 20%.

infielder Esteban Quiroz has impressed scouts at the while playing for . San Diego’s 40-man roster is crowded, but Quiroz can play in right now. Reminds me of Kole Calhoun at the plate.

A walk in 5 PAs vs USA ... https://premier12.wbsc.org/en/2019/schedule-and-results/box-score/3705

Quiroz was considered to be a steal when the Padres got him from Boston for RP Brewer.  Unfortunately, he had an injury-filled year in 2019 and did not get consistent healthy stretches of ABs which pushed him out of the limelight.  As a LHH, he's probably better than Garcia although limited mostly to 2b - probably could play a little 3b or ss in a pinch but hopefully we won't need much help there.  This is a high OBP professional hitter with a little bit of pop.  Not surprised if he gets a spring training invite.

Doesn’t need to be protected in Rule 5 .... should get a ST invite and be ticketed to be added to the 40 man and called up if the situation arises.

Or saves us 1.3 million vs Garcia .. Money we could use elsewhere

Yeah, Pads I believe control him for years before even having to protect him.  Unusual luxury.  Near certain to be in ST.

I'm pretty sure his presence is why SD hasn't found/made room for Ivan Castillo (S) 2B in AA for Amarillo who won Texas League batting title... Minors FA seems possible will get a MLB contract, guaranteed to get a ST invite from wherever he signs.

Garcia is not an "expensive" luxury; only when his salary is added to Kinsler's.  I would not dump Garcia now in offseason for that nominal savings.... possible mid-season trade candidate if Quiroz excels first 1/2.

But Kinsler is dead $ & does NOT fit this roster in any way shape or form.  Release him now; let him latch on somewhere on a minors deal.  If he makes a MLB team, at least we save the minimum salary of the last guy on our roster.  I think of his Salary as:  3 MM for being bridge to Urias, 5 MM as part of Machado's ("3B" before M.M. signed) deal.... admit the mistake & move on.  Keeping him around b/c he was Jayce Tingler's roommate 20 years ago sends a terrible message.

This is not my idea at all, so dont slay the messenger. Connor Grossman on Sports Illustrated, gives his crazy off season prediction that SD signs both Strasburg and Rendon! I would imagine in this crazy scenario that he imagines Rendon at 3B, Machado at SS, and Tatis at 2B. I cant imagine that SD could or would want almost $87M alone tied up into 4 INFs.

Definitely crazy!!!!, but hey, it was crazy to think Pads would get Hosmer, even more crazy to sign Machado and here we are.....i see it as one in a million chances.....but we still have a chance!!!!; in that hypothetical scenario, i see Rendon at 2B or Tatis in RF...

I would have to think in this scenario Rendon would play 2b.

Which he played as recently as 2015.

Otherwise you are moving Tatis to a position he's never played before....and Machado to one he may not be as good at as he once was(I know he's still very capable).

But...Rendon is a free agent so I would have to think if we were to sign him(.001% chance btw) he would have to be OK with his position.

So if he wanted 3b and 3b only....I guess that could happen.

.001%

So you're saying there's a chance!
