I guess I have a harder time seeing TB's logic ...

Pagan was ranked 14th among RP in 2019 in fWAR and ERA ... only 28 ... league minimum under control for 4 years. That would seem quite valuable. They do have a closer in waiting so that helps in moving Pagan but a legit contender needs multiple plus RP. Not sure what the do with Margot other than a back up / defensive replacement with Kiermaier (on a big contract) the defensive 1st CF.

RP come and go ... does TB know something about Pagan that we don't? On the other hand we think the Padres may be setting up a second deal using a RP ... what if TB got Margot to set up a second deal themselves?

Well,I guess instead of a 6 man rotation we could have a Bullpen game once every 10 days or so?

That is what I suspect ....

As it stands ... CF/RF alignment is going to be a major battle in ST and then even over the 1st month (against serious pitching).

Setting up for Myers as a full timer either in CF or RF .... but more likely they will keep messing with Myers and have him move between the positions depending on which LHH plays.

That highlights the second issue ... the other primary options are inexperienced and a LHH: Grisham; Cordero; Naylor; or even Cronenworth. I guess the could add Almonte to the roster ... but only really a bench option given his ML track record. Oliveras may be a long shot as a RHH but only out of AA (and did most of his hitting at home) .. hard to see him take a starting spot.

I guess we should keep an eye out how quickly they move Trammell (LHH) ... maybe be slotted in AAA .... for a mid-season call up if needed.

Probably start the season to validate the new guy with Pham / Grisham / Myers but if that is not working for Grisham after about 100 AB ... go to Pham / Myers / Naylor (who cares about defense). Cordero might squeeze in ahead of Naylor.

Not the options we want to see in CF/RF in a win now scenario.

To add to Brian’s list:

11. Boston sends us Bradley Jr. in a Betts deal instead of Price.

12. Preller plans to not extend our Starters past the 6th inning even when dealing to limit their innings all season.

Maybe get Archer (back) or Josh Bell since Pitt does seem to like Margot (asked about him in a Marte deal).. So mayne Rays needed Margot for such purposes.. The return for Pagan seems light.. I mean Hand had less control and landed us a top C prospect (Mejia)..sure Hand had the better track record BUT Pagan has that 4 yrs of control and some pretty awesome analytic splits (2019)...  So pretty happy with this move .especially since Margot seemed like just a 4th OF /Defensive specialist going foward

How about Benintendi in CF? Just signed a 2/20 extension himself.. Or as someone mentioned Verdugo flip to SDP

Doubt they would flip Verdugo ... cheap with 5 years control. Actually hard seeing them moving either since if they move Betts to get Verdugo and let Bradley go after the season (or sooner) the 2021 OF is Verdugo - Benintendi - ????? ... not even legit back-ups on their roster. Boston will likely be looking for ML OF before they consider trading one.

Did a quick comparison of Margot and Kiermaier based on 2019 ... both about the same age and both plus defenders (Kiermaier "slightly" better).

Margot's fWAR at 1.6 is actually better than Kiermaier's 1.5.

I like to take home field bias out (and Margot suffered in PETCO) the AWAY comparison has:

Margot: .759 OPS / 95 wRC+ vs. Kiermaier: .678 OPS / 75 wRC+. So if that is what TB is seeing Margot is a significant offensive upgrade without much diminishment defensively. Should also note that Kiermaier was slightly better at home ... so if Margot is also better than AWAY at HOME ... could work out well for TB.

Maybe it is Kiermaier that want to deal (and his inflated contract).

Some cold water to this AM:

  • Between all of the uncertainty surrounding the Mookie Betts trade and yesterday’s Padres/Rays trade that sent Manuel Margot to Tampa Bay, there has been some speculation that the Padres could be clearing center field for a late strike at acquiring Betts.  However, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe (Twitter link) suggests the opposite, noting that since Margot was reportedly part of the Betts negotiations between the Red Sox and Padres, sending Margot to the Rays indicates that San Diego decided to go in another direction.

My thoughts were that since the Sox went with LA because they took Price and his contract....the Padres aren’t willing to take Price but may be willing to take JBJ to further lower Bos. payroll, which is obviously their main objective.Obviously this is  long shot....but.

If Bos. wants a young controllable reliever(Munoz/Pagan) along with young controllable SP(Lucchesi/Quantril) and a young, cheaper OF(Grisham/Cordero/Naylor) this trade could make some sense “if” JBJ in the deal is a Bos. requirement.

Myers/Quantril/Pagan/Grisham/Campusano for Betts/Bradley.

With SD paying 1/3 of Myers contract.

Just a thought.......but what a coup it would be if we “stole” Betts from the Dodgers!
