Now or at the trade deadline AJ is set up with plenty of trade chips. There are tons of teams with bullpen needs and the Padres will be the place to shop. Save them AJ, and cash them in for a CF prospect who can hit and plays good defense or a corner OF prospect who can hit over .260/.340 with good power. We are counting on you AJ!!

This move is a bit of a head scratcher at this point in time. Agree that could be setting up another move that includes a RP (maybe even Pagan).

He was very good last season ... age 28-29 .... league minimum with 4 years control. That seems valuable. Driscoll is a nice prospect but a long ways off and Margot who is a defense first CF joins Kiermaier in TB as a defensive first CF. Bit confused TB's logic although Margot was decent offensively AWAY from PETCO (.260ish) so maybe TB sees that as an upgrade.

On the flip side, SD did not NEED another RP ... and a defensive 1st RHH CF seemed valuable considering the alternatives are a LHH ... Grisham (who did not hit away from Miller Park), Trammell (who struggled in AA), and Cordero (injured for the better part of two years). Can't see the Padres ... if they want to contend ... relying on any of them for an everyday CF ... hope yes but rely?

Hard to see either sides' logic clearly .... unless additional moves are afoot.

RHRP Yates, Pagan, Stammen, Johnson ...LHRP Pomeranz, Strahm, Castillo ... that is 7 out of 8 with a very long list of candidates for the 8th RP.

Has to be more to come .... or perish the thought .... Myers will become the CF and Naylor in RF if Grisham / Cordero / Trammell don't come through in early 2020 🙁

Padres do save Margot's $2.475MM salary.

Add me to the list of fans scratching their heads over this trade. I'm all for a dominant bullpen, but I thought we had the ingredients for one already.

Are we lining up for another trade of some kind? Maybe with Munoz? I sure don't get it.

Random thoughts going through my head, in order:

  1.     They've tried to extend Yates & just haven't been able to find common ground, so giving up.  High likelihood of deadline or sooner trade... even if "Buyers" at deadline.
  2.     Some insane deal worked out re: Betts?!?!
  3.    A Margot trade in the next 12 months did look near inevitable as he progressed up in salary... but played as a platooner
  4.   Pads HAVE to have a defensive CF in mind to help out here...  do they see Jankowski as an inevitable "cut" in Reds' croweded OF?  Someone else along those lines... cheap but elite defensively?
  5.    Preller knows something(s) we don't
  6.    Preller has snapped & is grasping at straws; CF being Myers/Grisham/Cordero reminds me a lot of 2015
  7.    Padres may feel that the "gap" between Margot as a platooner and Edward Olivares in that same role may not be that large, and saw a chance to grab major value in trade, even though it's at a position of strength
  8.   There is some big weird move in the works that none of us will see coming

9.  Look for a Yates + Myers trade at deadline!  Cover all of BOTH remaining salaries in 2020 (maybe 7 MM of Myers, 2 MM of Yates ... but trading team has to take on at least that much $ ON TOP OF "fair market value" for Myers in 21-22.... So if "FMV" = 2/20, acquiring team takes on 2/30 of Myers in 21-22.  Pads enter 2021 SET at SP, SET in Bullpen despite no Yates, only 2/10 remaining dead $ to Myers, and a few spots to fill in the field with significant $ to work with.

10.  "Real" competition for 5th OF = RH who can help defensively @ CF, maybe short side platoon includes Altamonte & even Gettys

I keep thinking about this one, and I just really don't get it. I'm not particularly tied to Margot, but couldn't we have done better than this? The Pirates wanted him as a part of a Marte deal... wouldn't that have been a better use of Margot's capital?

I'm just not sure what this gets us aside from an addition to what was already a sufficiently great bullpen. We lose our clear top CF glove and have left us with... what? Grissom and Cordero? I mean, I love to dream, but dreaming is all we can do with those two. Neither is nearly as good with their glove, and both have a long way to go before being an asset with the bat.

I've been as patient as anyone with Preller, and this isn't the final straw or anything, and I really do love the idea of an ironclad bullpen... but man. I don't get it.

Margot wasnt going to get much playing time (only vs LHP) .. So to get an elite type BP arm for basically Margot and some 30-50 prospect is a no brainer.. Sure a 2B or an OF upgrade would have been better ..BUT sometimes that's not how things lineup... I think AJP saw the writhing on the Wall on Margot's playing time and maybe not even making the 26th..or simply has another move in mind that requires Pads to give up a BP arm or 2 in exchange for player X

Well,I guess instead of a 6 man rotation we could have a Bullpen game once every 10 days or so?

I think we got a tremendous WIN for Margot + Discroll .. I mean 4 yrs of control for a closer/setup man is GOLD..
