But with that said-- maybe Betts is back up in play for us..

We could do anything we wanted w our prospect capital. Trading a budding star to a rival is a long shot but Verdugo is a perfect piece for our young team. Gon a be fun to watch!

Twins pulled out of Mookie deal. Should we get our hopes up again or do you think Dodgers get it done w another team? Could The Padres be a third team and get Verdugo?

Sox want Verdugo to replace Betts--- the 3rd team (Twins or other now) gets MAEDA.. and gves up TWO top 10 prospects to the Red Sox (which Twinkies said NO to)...

Whew! a lot of ways this can play out.

We assume that the Twins still want Maeda (was worth the #83 MLB prospects the first time) but maybe that has to do a lot with their opinion of Graterol (and now Boston's opinion). They have other prospects ranked around that slot that apparently they hold in higher esteem so don't want to switch. Given that ... maybe Maeda is not worth even a single Top 100? LAD really don't need to deal Maeda ... now ... not making that much and could just deal him independently if they wanted to move him ... he does have some value. Maybe still to the Twins ... just not for anyone Boston wants.

That still leaves Boston wanting a Top 100 type to finish the trade (or possibly LAD taking more of Price's contract). In LAD's court to make that happen.

Meanwhile back at the ranch .... LAA are fuming that the Pederson / Stripling deal is not going through and not sure how much of a stink they will put up and if they will try to alter the deal (or maybe LAD wants to alter the deal).

Three unhappy teams, an unhappy Commisioner, an unhappy Union, an unhappy Boras, unhappy players, unhappy fans ... but very happy reporters. Not the construct the league wants heading into CBA negotiations in a couple of years.

Have to think Preller is inserting himself ... he always does. Maybe not Betts but with Minn or LAA given his "excess pitching" if he wants to strike on a prospect while shrinking the 40 man.

Verdugo is damaged goods..chronic back issues

IF the initial proposals with LAD, Bost, MINN, LAA went through as billed .... Boston would be about $18MM under that tax threshold and LAD maybe $8MM over. Plus since the initial announcement the LAD extended both Muncy and Taylor for maybe a plus $8MM to AAV and something like $16MM over based on my estimates.

So, maybe the option of the LAD just taking more of Price's contract starts to look not as appealing given the penalty and implications to AAV in future years (if they want to pursue a Betts extension). So maneuvering for a player to satisfy BOST seems the way to go.

On the other hand if LAD just let the deal die ... no tax issue ... and probably still win the NL West. Annoying yes but not all that bad for LAD ... not much incentive to "overpay" to get the deal done.

Boston on the other hand returns to its penalty phase ... lost its #1 trade partner to achieve its cost cutting goal and may have to really compromise to get under the luxury tax level. Betts trade value may have just gone down with other teams (i.e. SD) knowing to make a deal with LAD Price would likely be out of it and LAD are not giving up their prospects easily. Back to Betts at $27MM being moved with no large return contracts getting them their objective and does not appear teams are lining up to do that let alone give the prospects.

Seems as though Boston is playing a game to jack up the price that no one else wants to play. IF their prime objective was to go under the tax threshold taking Graterol was the best (and maybe only) route. Maybe the backlash in Boston made them look of an escape .... maybe the lure of actually getting Wil Myers was too compelling ūüôā

There are conflicting reports....

Minnesota really needs the SP, and the team friendly low base/high incentive Maeda deal is a great fit for them.   But I LOVE that they're sticking to their guns & telling Boston "Hell no".

The most obvious solution if Twins back out is for LAD to just "replace" Graterol (#"53" but obviously that's in doubt now, whether injury concerns are valid or not) with a prospect/s of their own.  They're not giving up their top 3, but #4 RHP Gray#75 rose to & thrived in AA last year; less "upside" than Graterol, but actually looks more ready to ascend more quickly.  #5  SS Downs is #87.... but they probably REALLY don't want to since Maeda/Price basically a quality & $ "wash", the key to the deal for them might have been NOT giving up more talent?

Don't know if Boston is engineering this push for more legitimately or not, but they are going to look BAAAD if this falls apart... think:  chance of Betts returning on long term deal from some % to absolute zero...

The Price for Maeda component really can't be replicated elsewhere, it's like the Myers for Betts component for SD...

Can't believe this!

Yeah after I posted I saw what Brad must have seen earlier.  Wait Boston isn't happy with the medicals in a trade? Shocker.  (I know different regime)

Rays are trading reliever Emilio Pagan to the Padres in exchange for outfielder Manuel Margot and prospect C/OF Logan Driscoll

Pagan is another nasty dominant reliever, but my initial thought is this trade turns out to be a win for the Rays. I think Margot’s defense will be sorely missed and I like Driscoll. I wonder if this means Munoz or Kirby type get moved?

This has the feel of a move to make another move?

I mean.....how many BP arms do we need?

I realize any good reliever is a good get but.........where are all these guys gonna pitch?

Is Yates about to be part of a deal?
