Off Season Thread

Early reports has Boston and LAD splitting Price's salary in half .... LAD pick-up $16MM/year for 3 years. Maeda is about $3MM/year for 4 years. Of course, LAD could not have made this trade (and preserved it top prospects) unless they went this route ... so, not a simple Price v. Maeda comparison with a $13MM cost differential.

Maeda has massive incentives for starting games & IP max-ing out @ 10 MM for 32 GS / 200+ IP.  So a healthy really productive year from Maeda costs exactly what every year next 3 years regardless of health will for Price.  Not sure how incentives affect luxury tax salary.

Maeda will benefit b/c Twins really needed SP this year & next losing FA's.  PERFECT contract for a budget conscious team like Twins that only pays for results, saves millions if injured/ineffective.  A top 100 prospect "is he a SP or RP?" for 4 years of this contract with Maeda given Twins "now" SP need on a playoff caliber team a complete no-brainer win for the Twins.

... and LAD unfortunately who "push" at the SP spot without having to give up a top 100 prospect to Boston.  Plus they'll gain a pick if they don't sign Betts long-term next offseason.

Sigh...

No way whatsoever to compete when we had to include Myers, and LAD were able to take "enough" of Price to save Boston big $.

But LAD getting him--while annoying--does have a silver lining.  LAD losing 5 years of Verdugo is the obvious biggie.  But they do also exchange 4 years of 31 y.o. Maeda on his insanely team friendly deal (only 3 MM/yr base + up to 10 MM incentives/yr) for the likely "fair" value 3 years of 34 y.o. Price @ EST 16 MM/yr.  Not crippling to LAD big budget, but a lot more of an annual $ commitment.

It just sucks however, that by expendable Joc Pederson being separately traded, LAD may actually increase their depth/Farm as a result of all the moves...

Back to hoping we develop our prospects I guess lol. For a moment it felt as though we could reach the sun...

All jokes aside, I dont mind us retaining Campusano. Could play a significant future role. Also LAD still has to get past an improved Yankees and a still strong Nationals team.

Let's go ST!! I am over being depressed by LAD.

This is on Preller. He made his Myers/Hosmer bed and we the fans have to lay in it.

We need to use the prospects/mlb ready players of Naylor, Lucchessi, Margot that were supposed to be earmarked for Betts, to acquire Clevinger or Merrifield who are cheap. We keep Myers, hope for a bounce back year(3+ war) and trade him next year or at deadline. 2020 is looking like another developmental year. Problem is we gave up a lot for Pham to compete this year but the Dbacks and Dodgers hedged those "Betts" big-time.

At this point I just don't see Clev. trading Clevinger or the Cubs trading Bryant until the trade deadline if at all.

They have good teams who could compete for the playoffs....but if they are securely out of the hunt at that time i could see either of them making a move to get prospects...especially Chi.

In the AL going to be interesting to see how some teams on the margin for the playoffs react to these current trades.

In the AL East .... NYY clear favorite but TB made the playoffs with a ton of wins last year and should be healthier and be a clear favorite to a Wild Card slot this season. Boston has reduced its competitive role. One Wild Card to TB.

In the AL West ... Houston still the strong favorite but LAA has really boosted its offense and it too getting healthier with Simmons and Otani. Remember OAK was the Wild Card last season. Very good chance the second Wild Card come out of the AL West.

In the AL Central ... making the playoffs may boil down to winning the Division.  MINN won last season and arguable got stronger. Cleveland not so much and although the CWS improved ... enough?

So, to a degree, Cleveland and CWS could be buyers if the feel the need to add to compete or, probably in Cleveland’s case, they could read the tea leaves and accelerate the inevitable (not a good farm) and start the full rebuild with some trades for prospects. Both Lindor and Clevenger could be on the move by the trade deadline at the latest. However, think a very high price tag given a lot of teams will come out of the woodwork to get Lindor (MVP type SS for 1.5 years) or Clevenger (Cy Young type for 2.5 years ... and low cost).

All the other teams should be sellers ... if they have anything to sell.

Cubs may be in a similar situation with Cleveland. Wild Cards may be out of the West (AZ) and the East (whoever comes in 2nd). So win the Central or out. Can they compete with the new look Reds, the ever contending Cards, and the Brewers who are still hanging in although dropping. Looks like a scenario that holds on to Bryant until the trade deadline then deal 1 1/3 years of Bryant ... maybe at a better price than now as a team gets desperate.

Possible, but not remotely enough to get these guys who are cheaper with more control than Betts.

Absolutely talking about at least Patino +.   IMO, chance of catching LAD for division in 2020 is now so low it doesn't make sense to make this big move now.  Deadline Pads should be extremely well positioned to be Buyers though.

That is the difference between the Padres and Dodgers.....they could absorb the money of both Betts and Price with money from Boston and players.

San Diego had to blink....paying 75-80 percent of Meyers contract plus players plus 1 yr player all for a ALL IN for 2020 would have killed this franchise for some years to come if they came up short this season.

If nothing else the Padres were just a stalking horse for Boston to drive LAD up.....Well played Boston and I say good job to Preller for NOT making this deal or falling into a very serious overpay......Time for the Padres to not only match the effort of their opponents this season but exceed that effort......Coach em up and turn em loose and battle.

We may as well get used to Mookie Betts in the NL West for a loooong time.

Cause unless the Braves lure him away next offseason it's most likely he re-signs with the Dodgers....and if neither of them get him I would put my money on the Giants.

They have been "sleeping" Giants the last couple years but they are bound to wake up and join the spenders soon.
