That makes him very valuable in today's game. I have seen on several other team's sites that they want to sign him. I actually expect a small bidding war for him which we will not win. Everybody needs relievers.
Agree the Padres will be in on Stammen and may be in a better position to re-sign him since the report from last year was that his family really wanted to be in SD and he really liked Balsley and the organization. Guessing that may override maybe a couple of K another team may offer higher.
Stammen eats innings and pitches in a lot of games with decent results ... pretty valuable when (other than Yates) the pen is pretty young and has not developed into those high use arms .. yet.

Quote from 3fingersplit on October 31, 2019, 5:56 pmThe Padres just need to keep one spot open on the 40 man for that top of the rotation guy.....Garritt Cole is going to the Angels is my guess and our Padres shock the Baseball world again this year and welcome home Steven Strasburg. Fowler is not getting any younger and Sidler really wants a World Series for the Padres.
Keep Balsley, Sign who you have to sign for depth, bring up this hot lava talent to the show, Quit screwing around with Meyers head and just let the guy play in one spot, platoon Hedges and Mejia, CF turns into a platoon position, Renfro learns some plate discipline and all of these guys learn how to hit foul line to foul line. France as a utility ( 1b,2b,3b ), Naylor and maybe one of the young studs makes the jump
Machado, Tatis, Urias and Hosmer is a pretty good infield and the Pitching with Strasburg, Paddack, Lamet, Richard, Gore, Patino, Lauer, Luchessi, Quantril in the mix for starting rotation with Yates, Castillo, Strahm, Wingenter, Munoz, Perdomo, Stammen etc in the bullpen and this isn't a bad team.

Quote from JasonE135 on October 31, 2019, 6:26 pmWith Dickerson as our bench coach I guess that means that Barajas is gone. Too bad, I liked him. Still, I am willing to give Dickerson a chance. At least Manny likes him. As long as we keep Balsley I will not have a problem.

Quote from JasonE135 on October 31, 2019, 8:45 pmI truly hate the fact Strasburg is going to get a qualifying offer this year! He is the perfect guy for us to go after: local boy and a true TOR starter but will be significantly cheaper than Cole. It just hurts that we have a high draft position(probably the last one that we will have this high for a long time), and that there is such premium talent in this upcoming draft! We could get a possible franchise cornerstone type talent this year, as long as we don't lose it by signing Strasburg, who we really need.

Quote from Randy Manese on October 31, 2019, 8:55 pmI believe the top 10 draft picks are protected for a team that wants to sign a free agent. The price would be the next highest draft pick, either round 2 or the Competitive Balance Round between rounds 1 and 2. It would be wonderful for the Padres to get Strasburg but he'll probably not sign with us - we can only dream! I'm hoping that Cole to the Angels is not a given otherwise we're back to Syndergaard or Kluber as trade possibilities. I'd stay far away from Price, although I'd take a flyer on Sale!

Quote from JasonE135 on October 31, 2019, 9:48 pmThank you Randy! I looked it up and it looks like we would only lose a 3rd round pick in 2020 if we sign Strasburg. That is nothing(comparatively). I think that Strasburg is our best chance at a true ace. He will probably be around $100 million cheaper than Cole. And while Anaheim is Cole's hometown, San Diego is Strasburg's. I personally don't want to get anywhere near Syndergaard or Kluber. Indians got a huge haul for Bauer and will probably be expecting another one for Kluber. BVW has already said that he will not trade Syndergaard unless he gets a return that is a massive win for him, to make up for his massive loss in the Cano trade. Besides which I see both of them, especially Syndergaard, declining. Noah's inability, or even worse, his unwillingness to change in order to improve his results is seriously distressing to me.

Could he head back to El Paso in some capacity maybe?

Quote from BoosterSD on November 1, 2019, 8:19 amWith the transactions that were made yesterday, I have updated my spreadsheet that I have for tracking the salary commitments for 2020.
At the moment;
Starting line up of Machado, Tatis, Urias, Hosmer, Myers, Margot, and Renfroe comes to - $75.5M.
Bench Players of Garcia, France, Hedges, Naylor, and Cordero comes to - $6.3M
Starting Rotation of Richards, Luchessi, Paddock, Lauer, and Lamet comes to - $10.9M
Bullpen of Yates, Munoz, Baez, Strahm, Perdomo, Castillo, Guerra, and Wingenter comes to - $10.2M
And dead money/buyouts/Kinsler comes to - $12.95M, all of which ends this year.
A grand total of $115.85M give or take based on 2020 minimum salaries for MLB. So if we assume that SD will go to $140M in payroll, that leaves around $24M for FAs.

Don't forget arb raises.. And if we can have someone eat Myers $$ even just $10 mil.. That would be $34 mil

Quote from BoosterSD on November 1, 2019, 9:45 amHenry, it does include arbitration raises in my number, based on MLBTR. And I calculated league minimum at $600K might be a touch high on that, but just works in SD favor. And yes, if we can get someone to take some of Myers money, then there's more monies to spend, but this was to give us a base to work off of at this time currently.
