Why is everybody so hell bent on HELPING Boston out...they need pitching PRESENT and FUTURE ?

The Padres need Pitching Present and Future and all this nonsense for a 1 yr rental that the Padres could NEVER sign and granted you move on from Meyers....so what .

Thats like asking a Bank Robber if they would like any help putting the money in the car after he robs us....Pay Meyers contract in part, Pay 27 million for Betts, give up young pitching

This is just too funny

You don't think Preller has thought this through?

Obviously he has considered every angle and maybe that's why it hasn't materialized.

You can't say it is a bad deal when we don't know what the actual deal is.

All we have are people on Twitter guessing.

One other consideration though...it could be AJ is being told this higher payroll all goes away if the Padres don't win a significant more games.Whether Betts gets a Championship or not he certainly would add some wins.

Maybe AJ knows he needs 81 wins just to save his job?

We just don't know what parameters he's operating under and we certainly don't know which prospects are "actually" being included or how much money.

Let's rant and rave "after" a bad deal is made eh?

Just my opinion.

The only way this happens for SD is if they blink regarding how much they pay for Meyers contract....send them 45 million along with Naylor, Luchessi, Morejon, Quantril and draft picks for the next 4 years and 1 million dollars in International money for Betts and Price

Everybody is happy here on the forum because we got rid of Meyers

That should beat the Dodgers offer and keeps Betts away from them for 1 year, he will sign with them in 2021 for 420,000,000 plus.....it's all about 2020 and if we don't make the playoffs then Fowler should sell the team to out of area owners that will move the Padres out of San Diego...convert Petco into a football stadium and bring the Chargers back or just make it a giant homeless shelter

All of this makes as much sense as some of the "Trade" ideas that have been floated on this forum.

Oh yeah I forgot.......BETTS does NOT put us in the Playoffs...he is not a 25 game swing

No but Pham, Davies, Pomeranz,Grisham, and Profar and Betts is a 25 game swing. We are projected 83 wins. If he's a 6 war player then we're 89-90 wins. That's a playoff team, and if we're in it at the deadline, we make a move for a TOR arm. The prospects going back don't bother me, it's the fact that we could use those chips somewhere else to get a player that has more control. Like Clevinger, or Kris Bryant.

Brian Connelly has reacted to this post.
Brian Connelly

I'm with 3finger on this.

If the Pads are discussing anything relatively similar to what Brian suggested, there is just NO WAY this deal makes sense for us. Whilst I'd love to have an MVP caliber player join Machado and Tatis( MVP caliber players themselves), I'm not selling the farm( LITERALLY!) for a one year rental.

If the stars all align, I believe we could make a push for the post season with Betts in the line-up. But when 2021 comes around and he's gone, our lack of depth( if we send 5 or 6 guys to Boston) could push us back down the ranks again. It's a looooong season - we need as many able bodied arms and bats as possible.

I think Will Myers has a bounce back year, I think Lamet and Richards will be solid, and that baseball will be good in San Diego this summer.

Now, I could get on board with Brad's suggestion!

Clevinger would be a HUGE get. Save pennies and players for him.

Sorry but these guys are NOT a 25 game swing and Betts does not make it a lock that we make the playoffs.

All this over a 1 yr rental at the expense of the long term viability of this team....what happens when you guys get your way with a stupid trade and the Padres still win just above 81 wins  and Betts doesn't move the needle and Profar and Grisham hit .190-.215, Pham hits .260 with 20 HR, Pitchers on the DL because thats what pitchers do and our depth is now in Boston so we rush young guys.

Just have to agree to disagree

Again.....I’ve never said trade for Betts at all costs.

I’ve only said don’t say it’s a bad deal until you at least know what the deal is.

You’re running with rumors as if real and saying it’s a bad deal.....while in reality we have no idea what Preller is “actually” willing to give up.

YOU have decided it will take Myers,Naylor,Lucchesi,Morejon AND Quantrill plus draft picks AND $45 million and dubbed it a bad deal.

I don’t think anyone here would disagree with you.

Have you spoken to Preller?

Cause if not.....come on!

You're still doing exactly what I advised against doing.

YOU are throwing out unrealistic trade scenarios and then lambasting them.

Well no kidding.

There is no way that’s what Preller is willing to give up and if you stopped to think about it instead of reacting you would agree.

3finger, I agree with you on a lot, but your proposal of them taking Myers for Betts straight up basically has got you in left field on this one...   I've got no issue with disagreeing with a trade or my proposal conceptually, or the VERY valid possibility that the timing is wrong (ask Preller end of year on that) to deplete a lot of the Farm...  but you've got to put a more viable alternative than 3 years of a 1-3 WAR guy plus his albatross contract for 1 year of a 6-10 WAR MVP.

I come down in between.  +25 wins is extremely optimistic.  But 3, you're saying all the moves Pads have made so far add up to literally + 0 wins?  Most National media projecting low-mid teens win improvement.  If you don't like what Preller has done so far, what SPECIFIC moves would you have made as GM?  Gotta be blunt... you're bitching & moaning about a team that's clearly better internally & externally (not every move... I'm very skeptical of Profar, etc..) & just saying everyone is going to get hurt & hit .215....?!?!

But here's my question:  Which would you rather have?

  1. Real chance to be in the wild card race THIS year with a proven MLB superstar in a contract year, a comp pick next year, move on from Wil "I hit .350 or .150 with 50% K rate" Myers, AND have our payroll 10 MM/yr+ lower each year in 2021 & 2022 when Gore, Patino, Trammell, etc WILL (still) be Padres... OR
  2. Really be shooting for just >.500 and not mathmatically eliminated by end of August, enjoy another season of Myers at yet another new position (RF) but as per his entire Pads career--batting too high in the order, risk our best chance at unloading 50-75% of Myers' contract.... I get he could turnaround.  I hope he does.  But Odds realistic being ally are that he doesn't; if not, could easily get stuck with more or even all of the contract as dead $.  KEEPING MYERS IS A BIG RISK!  Watching the "difference makers":  Quantrill compete for #5 SP... this year (he's our 9th best SP subjectively this year; he could rise, but so could guys behind him:  Baez, Lawson, Weathers, Joey Cantillo--an untouchable Cy Young candidate after his great season @ Low-A).   Margot a great short-side platoon guy in CF, Naylor who hit less HR in AAA/MLB than Ty France & Luis Urias each did, and (oh yeah, former) top 100 prospects "don't have a 3rd pitch, 2 yrs behind developing" Baez (or) "Can't throw > 65 IP without injury" Morejon

... I like many/most of these guys, but feel like I'm making FENN's "they're not difference makers" argument for him.
