Quote from Brian Connelly on January 29, 2020, 7:53 amHard to see Bryant deal... let's say 2/45 in now settled arb years. Pads could afford 18-19 this year even with +10 of Myers (about the same as just Betts + 0 Myers), but then what? Next year 25-26 Bryant + 10 more to Myers? But bigger issue is why would Cubs even consider trading 2/45 Bryant for 3/30 Myers?
And b/c of the 2nd control year, even though Bryant's not the WAR/player Betts is; absolutely positively talking about names we don't want to include like Patino here...

Quote from fenn68 on January 29, 2020, 8:22 amIt will about the players the Padres need to add but money wise:
Bryant ............. 19 - 25 - 0
Padre eat ........ 5 - 5 - 5
Padres pay ..... 24 - 30 - 5
Myers out ....... (20) (20) (20) (1)
Net Padres ..... +4 / +10 / - 15 / -1
So only a plus $4MM in the current year and the plus $10MM next year will easily be covered by the FA of Richards, Profar and the dropping of Kinsler and Olivera. Note that a ton of money also drops off the Cubs payroll next season ... so breakeven on money should not be an issue for either side.
Would boil down to the package needed to get the upgrade from Myers to Bryant. (and out bid a number of other teams that are going to dive in with Bryant a 3B and OF option).
Bet Preller and the Cubs have been discussing this already for weeks waiting for the grievance decision.
Some seem to think a Bryant deal may come sooner than Betts (with some team) ... has to have some strained relationship between Bryant and the Cubs and Boras is the agent equals Bryant going FA in 2 years.
Given the Cubs likely losing big money pitching in Chatwood, Quintana to FA after the season and declining an option on aging Lester .... Cubs would logically push for ML ready SP.
Low chance BUT as feasible as a Betts deal.

Quote from Brian Connelly on January 29, 2020, 9:18 amYou're assuming Cubs would take 3/45 on Myers... don't see how that possibly benefits them vs 2/45 for a vastly better offensive player plus an inevitable comp pick down the road. Think Pads could & would eat more of Myers $ in a Bryant trade, in an attempt to lower somewhat the prospect cost, and don't have the extreme pressure on this year's payroll like a Betts deal would.

That's surprising. I'm assuming they'd had wanted more, because if Margot was the key piece in a prospective deal for Marte I bite if I'm the Padres.

Quote from JasonE135 on January 29, 2020, 10:24 amQuote from fenn68 on January 29, 2020, 6:17 amWith a month before ST ... hearing that Boston is making a deal difficult because they still want to get LAD to up their offer (and LAD is apparently in on dealing for Betts). Key ... Boston does NOT take on Myers’ contract. LAD has the money ... LAD has the prospects ... Betts takes a WS favorite and makes them better.
So, a good chance a Betts trade is with the LAD. IF it goes this way and when (if) Bryant’s grievance if resolved .... should the Padres pivot to adding Bryant for RF? Offensively probably the same impact as Betts (no so defensively). Still ... would have to get the Cubs to take Myers. Problem.
I believe that the hang-up with the Dodgers is money as well. They are just under $30 million from the lux tax. Betts adds $27 million. If they take him they will end up over the tax eventually. That is why they want to put Pederson in the trade. They don't want to be over the tax any more than the Sox do.
I don't want Bryant. He seems like he is a problem.

Problem is that we don’t know the other pieces of a deal .... Margot may have been a secondary piece behind a much more valued piece ... combined too much.
Maybe Preller did want to deal Margot while considering a key piece of the Betts negotiations.
Maybe Preller did not want to take on the incremental $10MM to add Marte especially if he needed an incremental $7MM to add Betts.
Probably all of the above.
Never underestimate the impact of the money and how it is valued in a trade. PITT ended up dealing the $12MM per for two rookie ball prospects when apparently at a minimum NYM and SD were “interested”. I guess since that is how the deal ended ... 30 teams did not see greater value in Marte (not sure why other than the salary).

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 29, 2020, 10:37 amKnowing what Marte went for.. And Bryant being about 1.5x or more WAR vs Marte ...
I would say (including Wil) + Potts + Miller + Morejon + Quantrill gets the convo going...
Cubs have long been known to covet Lamet so there is that as well

I have also heard some comments about Bryant not being the best clubhouse presence ... nothing substantiated but ....
I too would pass on Bryant ... but then again I would pass on Betts given the cost for 1 year that I doubt ... even with Betts ... gets the Padres a wild card slot. Too many other IFs would have to fall the Padres way to think the playoffs probable.

Bryant will have a higher salary than Marte for the next two seasons by about $20MM ... so that may cut a bit of the return. Although corner OF are just not in demand (and AZ considers Marte a CF) ... Bryant’s value to some other team may be as a 3B which could push competition up.
Think your potential deal would get it done with Myers - Morejon - Quantrill and may not need the rest.
Since they would be getting Bryant to win now ... and I think they really need Lamet to win now as an upper rotation arm to pair with Paddack ... would not deal Lamet in any trade. Not all the comfortable relying on Lucchesi beyond a #5 and even less confident that Richards will return to his elite years or even stay healthy given his history.
Now if they could make it Myers (and his contract) - Quantrill - Luchessi, ... I might throw in a bit more from the farm for prospects after the Top 10.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 29, 2020, 4:32 pmConsidering the Reds current situation......along with ours....what about a pivot and look at a deal for Senzel?
Is there any way the Reds would trade him if they don’t get a major league ready starting SS back?
Just thinking.....he’s a 2b/CF...maybe the two things this team needs going forward more than any other.
Plus the Reds appear ready to win “now” and Senzel is kind of a guy without a position right now.
They say they are content holding on to him....but what if?
What are their other needs besides SS?
