According to Dennis Lin, the Padres are having discussions with the Red Sox about Betts. Myers and a package of prospects would go to Boston. I think Kris Bryant might be target number 1 and Betts target number 2 due to expected years of control. AJP and co will be landing a big fish soon. I’m excited to see who we land and I’m nervous about what we would have to give up. Now I’ll be glued to Mlbtraderumors. Haha

Dennis Lin reporting talks with Boston heating up for Mookie Betts... Patino/Gore and Abrams OFF THE TABLE

As fun as it would be to watch Mookie Betts for a season, I am wholly and completely opposed to trading for a guy that would be a guaranteed one year rental.

Generally would agree but IF the Padres give Myers (and his entire contract) and the prospect package is not debilitating for the future ... just maybe.

Boston taking Myers' contract is the key yielding only a net $7-8MM plus payroll in 2020 and major $41MM savings in 2021-22. After that it is the prospects ... should be at least 4.

Since getting Betts for 2020 (and a Comp Pick when he goes FA) would be fun ... but no long term value when the Padres are really contenders in 2021 and beyond ... would not even consider any of the top 5: Gore; Patino; Trammell; Abrams; and Campusano as they will be needed (or at least whichever develop) to build a real contenting team with elite talent.

Quantrill - Morejon - Oliveras - Arias the price to move Myers' contract? Less? Maybe sneak in Naylor instead of Oliveras to give Boston some immediate ML impact?

Who is the RF in 2021?

I am not going to hold my breath on this.

Betts will sign with the Dodgers as soon as he hits free agency so any deal with San Diego is a no go. Boston also wants to get out from underneath the David Price Contract and have said any deal for Betts has to include Price.

Price is damaged goods and as much as people would love to get rid of Myers and his contract so that the spot opens up for the next superstar outfielder everybody wants to put out there....Meyers money is not as bad a the money owed to Price and at least Meyers can play every day....Price will end up on the IR

Why would San Diego help out Boston ?

What is the upside to San Diego doing this ?

Trading Meyers and top shelf minor leaguers for a bloated contract ( Price ) and a one year rental ( Betts ) is just plain lunacy....nice bit of gossip for the offseason but a little short in the reality dept.

7:34PM: The main stumbling block in trade talks is how much of Myers’ contract the Red Sox would be covering, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, as the Padres want Boston’s obligation “to be much closer to the full value of the contract.”  The prospects reportedly being discussed in the trade aren’t any of San Diego’s “top five minor leaguers,” which would mean the likes of Gore or Patino aren’t involved.

If we're not giving up Gore-Patino-Abrams-Campusano, I'd be more inclined to do this. I'd even consider sending them Trammel. Hm...

My understanding is that Price is not part of the discussions with the Padres ... So, apparently it is Betts for Myers and prospects with money (no surprise) being the biggest stumbling block ... which in turn probably impacts the prospect discussion.

It seems Boston is lowering their demands and Price may not have to be included.

SD does this if Myers is included because after 2020 they save over $40mil.

Also they keep Betts from LA even if it’s just for 2020.

Betts is pretty good at baseball.

Maybe he’s enough to at least get us into the playoffs this season....anything can happen then.

Lastly if we can get him for  a package “like” Myers/Naylor/Quantrill/Morejon/Miller it also has the effect of clearing some roster spots for next seasons crunch without losing any of our top 5.

CBS Sports is suggesting the Padres are pushing Joey Cantillo (LHP) as part of the deal ... not the #1 piece.

Still don't see this happening but:

Padres get one year of Betts (an elite MVP type) at $27MM and then likely a Comp Pick as he goes FA. On the optimistic side, he could upgrade the offense / defense enough to pick up just enough wins to get a wild card slot. On the pessimistic side, Betts could be adversely impacted by moving for a hitter friendly Boston (AL East) and go to the unfriendly confines of PETCO (and the NL West) and provide only minimal improvement.

Padres shed Myers ... most would be OK with that ... but how much of his $61MM remaining contract? Then the Padres throw in a package of quality prospects (clearly who included is a debate and maybe a function of the amount of contract moved).

If I was dealing from the Padres side given those parameters ... push for Boston to take most of Myers' contract and offer a better package of prospects (after the Top 5) ... remember Boston not only wants to make progress on the luxury tax (and Myers is about a $14MM AAV vs Betts $27MM) plus have a bad farm system. Any decent prospect package should appeal. Betts is sort of irrelevant (that is hard to say) with only 2020 in play ... and the real deal is the prospect cost to move the max of Myers' contract.

I would guess Preller is not all that motivated to pay Boston's price now ... it is more likely up to Boston to concede to Preller's best offer.

Keeping the speculation going:

January 24: Talks between San Diego and Boston regarding Betts are “ongoing,” Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. The Padres have proposed scenarios that would send Myers, controllable MLB assets and prospects to the Red Sox.

"controllable MLB assets" is a new take vs just a bundle of minor league prospects.

I would think that puts Quantrill and/or Naylor into play. Since Boston does not plan to go into full rebuild and plans to contend in 2020 ... both could add immediate value and have that long term control aspect. Both were at one time Top 100 types and clearly Naylor fits the AL 1B/DH role (the idea was the Boston moves Chavis to 2B).
