Quote from fenn68 on January 15, 2020, 7:17 amPutting a different spin on opportunities for the Padres to make moves to "clean up" their roster (and maybe get a return) as a result of Donaldson signing with the Twins.
- MINN has a powerful offense with 3B/1B and most of their offense locked down for a few years BUT the SP is really lacking ... a lot of 13 to 12 games. Padres may have ML ready SP who may be considered an upgrade NOW (Lucchesi, Quantrill?). MINN has some decent non-pitcher prospects ... maybe?
- CLEV has the elite SP staff but is deficient in offense ... and now probably more at risk to make the playoffs with the upgrade of MINN. Not the greatest prospect pool but some interesting talent ... they are not going to take a big contract (write-off Myers in a deal) but maybe a upgrade bat like Naylor, Cordero is a gamble they may take.

Wonder if that opens up some trade opportunities for the Padres with WASH or ATL or STL. Doubt the Arenado trade materializes ... so those teams seem to think they need more to compete (does not have to be a 3B) or even a front line player.
Glad to see another big bat go to the AL, the more the merrier. Keeps the other possible NL wild card teams from improving.

Quote from fenn68 on January 15, 2020, 1:48 pmCaesar's opening Vegas line for wins by the Padres .... 83! LAD is at 99 wins and the Padres are tied with AZ at the 83. COLO is 4th and SF last at 71 wins.
Note this is a betting line not a prediction ... should get a lot of "under" bets.
83 wins likely does not make the Wild Card 2nd slot but should prevent "heads from rolling" 🙂

Quote from fenn68 on January 16, 2020, 7:37 amTwo of the long term cornerstones of the Padres ... Hosmer and Machado .. need to improve over their lackluster 2019 in order to gain those additional wins. While we tend to focus on offense (and we should) ... took at look at their defense stats since both were signed with glowing reports as elite defense forces. 2019 did not support those reports.
Hosmer actually was #1 among ML 1B in ERRORS (14) ... that is a lot at 1B. From my observation, seems like a loss of focus on a good number of those errors ... ie simply dropped balls ... rather than being eaten up by difficult grounders. Should be correctible ... but for a big money "leader" a concern.
Machado is also a concern ... not that he is bad since he ranked 7th in dWAR among the 3B with greater than 750 innings, 7th in DRS, 9th in UZR/150 BUT he was signed, in part, and given the big money based on being an elite defense force ... he is "above average" but no longer "elite". Consider has decline in UZR/150 over the years:
2012 ... 14.8
2013 ... 21.5
2014 ... 12.5
2015 ... 5.8
2016 ... 9.9
2017 ... 2.2
2018 ... primarily SS
2019 ... 3.8
I am afraid the "image" of Machado was forged by his 1st 3 years and we may ignoring the reality of the past 3 years. In 2017, Dickerson / Kirby were with him in BALT ... so the wishful thinking of their move to SD improving Machado may be misplaced. Add Machado's below average offense at PETCO ... and not getting the productivity that we should demand at the front end of a $300MM / 10 year contract when Machado is still in his prime. He needs (should) exceed his contract value in the early years to cover the erosion age will cause in the later years of the deal.

The list was for “non-roster” invitees ... all the 40 man normally just are in ML camp. So, Olivares and Cronenworth should be there.
Just guessing, but ML camp will be crowded INF/OF with a lot of expected AAA options taking up ABs and since Córdoba was only in A+ and ticketed for AA probably better for him to get more work on the minor league side.

Quote from fenn68 on January 17, 2020, 2:43 pmThe Padres announced today they have designated left-hander Nick Margevicius for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster was needed for the re-signing of reliever Craig Stammen.
That was my guess and I can only suggest the delay was Preller trying to work some deals to clear roster space ... and could not find a taker for any of his proposals (not only on Margevicius).
This may indicate that no moves are forthcoming before late ST.
